About Universal Audio USB Interfaces
Think UA audio interfaces are just for Mac and Thunderbolt users? Guess again! There’s a whole fleet of Apollo and Volt interfaces at Sweetwater waiting to inject your Windows PC projects with powerful UAD processing.
Take the Universal Audio Apollo line of USB audio interfaces for PC. These desktop boxes give Windows users access to world-class Apollo audio conversion, real-time Unison preamp technology, and Universal Audio’s whole line of UAD Powered effects and instrument plug-ins. All that’s required is a compatible 64-bit Windows 10/11 PC with USB 3 or 4 built natively into the motherboard. Read these guides for more information.
As for the “Twin” and “Solo” in the Apollo Twin USB and Apollo Solo USB? These refer to the number of preamps you get in each interface. The Twin’s two preamps are handy for recording stereo sources and singer/songwriter acts simultaneously. For the home recordist who primarily tracks one source at a time, the Solo will do fine.
Another important factor is the number of SHARC processors (chips) that reside inside your Apollo interface. The Apollo Twin USB models come with two chips while the Apollo Solo USB has just one. More processors will yield greater DSP possibilities for mixing and mastering. See this chart for Apollo DSP usage by plug-in.
Are the Apollo series’s onboard DSP and Unison technology not required for your projects? Then you might consider the plug-and-play convenience of the Universal Audio Volt series of USB audio interfaces. These industry leaders make an ideal first interface for podcasters and budding home recordists. Not only do Volt interfaces give you universal compatibility via USB-C; but they also give you one-touch tone shaping by way of their tube-flavored analog preamps — your choice of one, two, or four — and, in the case of the Volt ’76 models, a three-stage analog compressor guaranteed to have your drums and vocals slamming on their way into your DAW.
Unlike Apollo interfaces with native DSP, Volt interfaces leave the processing up to your desktop or laptop. You still get a generous selection of amp, effects, and instrument plug-ins with the purchase of a Volt interface. You also have access to the growing collection of UAD native plug-ins via a UAD Spark subscription or a one-time purchase of a native UAD plug-in license.
Ready to harness the power of Universal Audio’s Volt and Apollo USB audio interfaces for your recording projects? Find out why Sweetwater’s the best place to spec your home studio!
