The Neve of Audio Interfaces

For audio professionals, the name Neve needs no introduction. Installed in world-class control rooms worldwide, the company's large-format consoles have recorded countless iconic hits since the '70s. Wouldn’t it be awesome if you could infuse your DAW-based studio productions with the authoritative sound of a Neve front end? Well, now you can! The Neve 88M USB-C audio interface incorporates the same transformer-balanced circuitry as the company’s flagship 88RS console. Equipped with reference-grade AD/DA conversion, the 88M delivers the uncompromising audio quality and peerless musicality only Neve can provide. Designed and built in England, the Neve 88M brings home the sound of Abbey Road, Air, and Capitol Studios.

No-compromise British engineering

The Neve 88M packs a ton of utility into its rugged compact chassis. The inclusion of ADAT optical I/O gives you eight channels of digital connectivity, bringing you potential channel counts of up to 10 in and 10 out, all while two sets of balanced inserts expand your analog connectivity. USB-C protocol provides speedy transfer rates while future-proofing your investment. So, yes — the 88M is very well appointed for its compact form factor. But it’s under the bonnet where Neve’s superior engineering works its magic. Designed and built in England, the 88M features purist circuit paths that strictly utilize premium analog and digital componentry, such as Neve’s universally lauded Marinair transformers, which assist in delivering the classic Neve sound.

Infuse your music with sonic authority

Neve consoles wrote the book on characterful mic preamplification. When even your inexpensive dynamics take on new sonic authority through the 88M, you’ll start to see the contents of your mic locker in a whole new light. The fact that it can handle and finesse all your sources — including dynamic, condenser, and ribbon mics; instruments; and line-level signals — makes the 88M invaluable for today’s DAW-based studio workflows. The 88M’s DI circuitry makes electric basses and guitars sound like they’re plugged into a great amp. Keyboards and synthesizers soar and growl with crystalline transparency. Acoustic instruments with pickups shine with authentic tone and dimensionality. Whatever you pass through the Neve 88M, you can be assured it will sound its best.

Neve: the legend continues

At Sweetwater, the name Neve commands reverence. Rupert Neve started designing audio equipment in the tube console era but made his mark with solid-state designs. Setting up shop in England's Little Shelford in the ’60s, Mr. Neve faced many obstacles while establishing his brand amid a new technological landscape. Transistors were new, expensive, and difficult to obtain in quantity in the UK. Reliable faders didn’t exist yet — a far cry from today’s world, where parts are affordable and readily available from multiple suppliers who are all competing to win bids. Nevertheless, Neve persisted. And by the early '70s, the Neve company was humming along, taking orders and building custom transformer-balanced consoles for recording and broadcast studios around the world.

Your Neve console front end

Neve 80 Series consoles had a huge, punchy, and authoritative sound that defined the sound of ’70s rock. From London to New York to Los Angeles and beyond, top studios were installing Neve desks as fast as they could. By 1978, with the introduction of the majestic 8078 — the pinnacle of handwired analog “production” consoles — and NECAM automation system, Neve boards were the main component in the success formula for any recording studio with world-class aspirations. In the decades since, Neve has innovated with such groundbreaking products as the VR, VX, and 88R Series consoles. And today, the company continues to advance its state-of-the-art products with cutting-edge and incredible-sounding pro audio gear that intelligently addresses the challenges of the digital age. Simply put, your 88M from Sweetwater will imbue your home studio projects with Neve’s inimitable audio excellence.

Reviews

Rock-Solid Reliability | Neve-Quality Sound
I've been using my 88m for over two years now and all I can say is "There's no going back."

My prior interface was an RME Fireface UC (which was/is amazing), but the software was unwieldy and was difficult to manage, especially for a voice actor who only needs one high-quality mono track.

Since my needs are few (but critically important), this interface has many options that I will never take advantage of (see product video). But once the driver is installed, it is straight plug and play (and if you're a Mac user - no driver installation is required). No fancy software, just uncomplicated, pro-grade sound -- exactly what I need to power my U87 Mic.

This is Neve's first foray into small interfaces, and I hope it won't be their last. Well done Neve Corp. Bravo

(I was not compensated for this review in any way)

The greatest sounding interface since creation

All I would say: WOW. Even for a USB powered unit, those 88RS mic pres in the 88M are immense - they just sound bloody amazing. Smooth, full, warm, but not muffled or restricted at all - everything sounds good through this, but particularly vocals and keys. The balanced inserts are awesome - and think of it this way, a two channel Neve preamp with Marinair-spec transformers, balanced inserts and ADAT in/out for $ (AUD)? Bargain. And then throw in the fact it's also a top quality audio interface, and you have a winning combination. Don't worry about it just being USB powered - it's USB 3.0 powered so it's more than enough, unless you knew it was USB powered you could not tell just by listening. If you're on the fence trust me, just buy it.

Full disclosure - I did have an issue with the first unit I purchased, but the after sales service experience with AMS Neve was the single best customer service experience I've had - I emailed them saying I had an issue with my new unit, and I expected the usual response I've had from other audio manufacturers, which usually consists of a couple of trouble shooting tips that almost always don't help, and then a suggestion to get it seen by a local tech. Neve shipped me a replacement unit almost immediately, without needing to wait for me to send the faulty unit in first - I couldn't believe it, that's such an incredible dedication to customer satisfaction that I'll be talking about it for years. Yes I will need to return the faulty unit now, but the fact that I didn't have to wait for it to be sent back, tested etc before they sent me a replacement is absolutely phenomenal. The only problem I have now is that I want to fit the rest of my studio out with Neve gear!

Great so far!
Just got done using it for the second time. It does exactly what I'd hoped it would do. Sounds great, easy to use, no driver BS. I have a new MacBook Air w Studio One 6.
Plugged right in and it immediately worked once I told studio one which input to look for. The headphone output is more than adequate…. If you need it louder you probably need to start thinking about the long term health of your hearing.
I have a couple good preamps.. LA610, Neve 5211. Apogee Quartet. I couldn't say that its better than any of that, but
I wanted portability and no power requirements. Now I just have to pay for it : )
Easily the best interface I have owned.
Easily the best interface I have owned, but first impression wasn't great. Give it a few days.

As a voiceover, I wanted the easiest-to-use, highest-quality interface I could get. Most upper-tier interfaces are for audio-engineers and the like. As for me, I only need one high-quality mono channel, that's it (as a VO, this is all I really need).

Easy to use? 'Awehellya.' I'm a PC guy, so I just need to install the windows driver and it booted right up. Cool beans. There's no complicated user interface where troglodytes like me can easily screw things up. A major plus in my book.

Sound? In-cred-di-ble. But my first few recordings sounded very suspect. My voice sounds dark and bass heavy, like someone stuffed a wet wool sock into my headphones. But that was easily remedied with some very minor EQ on my voice track. Now, I will likely never use another interface ever again.

In fact, I often plug my Nuemann u87ai directly into the interface, bypassing the use of my UA710 Twinfinity or my Summit 2BA-221 mic pres.

Is it Quiet? As quiet as an Ohio-class submarine. I often think I forgot to plug it in (when I actually did).

Gratuitous photo of my audio stack included.

First impressions are strong
My first impressions on the unit are very strong. Grabbed the drivers for my windows pc, plugged in and it worked. I was recording very quickly after opening the box - no issues there (from my comfy couch due to the no nonsense design and portability). Drivers seems rock solid so far, on an old PC I'm recording with 64 ms of latency at 48000 kHz 24 bit. The monitoring is fantastic and very clear. I love the option to hear direct sound with zero latency in combination with the DAW. Headphone amp is very clear and clean. I plugged my bass in. The preamps are extremely quiet even cranked. I liked the bass tone as is, but it lit me up when I ran a DI to it from an old tube amp. I had an amazing take right away and it sits in the mix like magic even with nothing on it. I love that it's plug and play and I don't have to mess with other outboard gear or plug ins to get a good sound. To people who don't understand the cost of the interface - you are getting extremely good preamps built into the unit well worth the cost alone. It's the cost of admission for preamps at this level. This is an excellent minimalist and one step solution to professional sound. The clean signal is professional quality without the need for plug ins upon plugins. To me this makes more sense than than the UAD stuff, but to each their own. I'm very happy with my bass sound. I have not yet tested mics on it, but I expect good results based on the DI sound which runs through the same circuit. So far, the 88m is making my recording experience extremely satisfying.
