Most musicians start with a makeshift workstation, but there comes a time when you have to start thinking about looking at a professional studio desk or workstation.

The choice of a studio desk in an important one, but it's often overlooked. The studio desk you select impacts your work in a major way. Whether you want to record, mix, master, or edit in post, a good workstation will enable you to have the equipment you use the most right at your fingertips. A lot of people try using a typical computer desk as a studio desk, but professional workstations are designed to maximize the flow of your work and make it simple and easy. They're designed for the studio, not the cubicle.

So how do you choose the right studio desk from our huge selection? When selecting a desk, think about the amount of equipment you have. Also take into account the equipment you plan on having in the future. A good workstation should be an investment, so it’s better to have a bit of empty space in the beginning than having to change desks frequently. The desks we carry come in a variety of rack capacities from 5 to 56. Bear in mind that a lot of people leave some space empty for ventilation or various storage. Your music should only provide heat in a metaphorical sense! Some studio desks also have angled rack spaces which can come in handy for tweaking processors.

Another thing to consider when selecting a studio desk is the amount of space you have in your studio. Will your desk fit in among your other equipment? A large desk is great, but if your studio is small or if you have a lot of external equipment, be sure to check if your new desk will fit neatly into the space. If you decide on a smaller workstation, you can always buy additional racks from us if you need them down the road.

Are you going to have a keyboard controller on your desk? Some studio workstations come with a keyboard controller tray included. Your options are 49-key, 61-key and 88-key. Select the one that is going to fit the largest keyboard controller you have.

Last but not least, let's talk aesthetics. What kind of finish do you want your studio desk to have? Some of the many choices that Sweetwater carries include black, gray, oak, almond, rosewood and mahogany.

Buying a workstation for your studio has never been easier! Questions about any of the specs? Give our Sales Engineers a call! We love helping you choose the best desk for your studio.
