Save Your Money If You Do Music

By 6DBeast from Sacramento, CA

This is not studio grade at all. If you are a content creator it might do the trick for you but it falls way short for music. That's why I'm giving it a 3 star rating. If you are hoping to get a better sound on a musical level save your money and get something else. I'm waiting on my replacement preamp right now and its decent I could have gotten an even better one if I had the money I spent on this preamp to add to my budget now I Just have a dust collector

Sounds great (but semi-faulty)

By Jacob Z.
Music Background: Guitarist, Audio Producer

I've been using this tube preamp to capture my electric guitar's DI signal and it indeed sounds very warm and fat! Setting the Low-cut filter to about 20-30hz sounds awesome to tighten it up. The downsides are that the EQ feature crackles the audio when it's passed the 0db. When disengaging the EQ the signal spikes up, clips and causes a pop. I have to lower the volume beside it before touching this button. Also, despite the phantom power light showing up on the left channel, it does not send phantom power to my Rupert Neve DI, so I have to use the 2nd channel for some reason. Overall, not all of the features work 100% as expected, but it does its job at minimum. My issues could be just a faulty circuit on my particular product, hense why I have it 4 stars and not less.

Behringer preamp mic 2200 v2

By Mark m. from Woodstock ga

These are great preamps , they are quiet sound great, I use them to record drums and bass in my studio, nice fat sound, they are also good for vocals, and guitars , I currently have 4 of these units and will add some more in the future, they work well with my tascam model 24,and the price is right, I would recommend them to any one seeking a good preamp at a great price. Thanks

Great preamp for music listening

By John from Montana
Music Background: Hifi enthusiast

I've been using this MIC2200 pre with the Behringer KM-1700 amplifier for HiFi music listening for a few years. It sounds great! I just noticed that some component mounted on the bottom cover gets quite hot. Not sure what the component is getting so hot. I will open it up to find out what it is. Not sure if I have a big mismatch somewhere? A preamp is low wattage, so in my experience this is abnormal.

Fantastic sound

By Roy S. from Castle Rock, CO

I played my electric guitars through this Preamp! The sound is fantastic. Much cleaner or dirtier sound, how ever you set it. All my recordings now go through this Preamp. I do not own a tube amp, and in my opinion this sounds just as good. Also solved feed back problems with the microphone! Excellent piece of gear, you can't go wrong with this preamp.

Best Tube Preamp for the money

By Marty C. from Cape Cod, MA
Music Background: Guitarist, Singer, Songwriter, Engineer, Leader of the band Exonym

I've had other entry level tube preamps. This one has 2 in one housing. The controls are simple and the outcome is immediate. In seconds I enhanced the sound of 2 different vocalists, myself being one of them. Our vocals cut through our live practice mix and I am really excited for using this on our next album. I imagine when it gets to the higher end ones there are major differences, but for the money this one is very solid. Just buy one and see the differences.

Great buy

By Mike U. from Houston
Music Background: 45+years musician and musical toy collectors

This is a great product,; especially for the price. It adds a nice even sparkle to everything I put it thE mix. Very easy to use and you don't need a manual or a couple of grand to get a very pleasant harmonic distortion to your sound. A great buy :-)

Great Mic Pre-amp

By Andrew N. from N. Central West Virginia

Used for Amateur radio, this pre amp provides great sound to the radio transmit audio. I was using a mixing board with a preamp, as I prefer the condenser mic I am using now because it suits my voice so well. That had a digital "tube sound," which was not really a great sound. This tube preamp really brought the audio out, and sounds fantastic. I run quite a bit of outboard audio with my radio, and all of it Behringer gear. For a budget, I have a fantastic sound that isn't reproduced by may others unless they are as into great sounding audio as I am. Sean, the Rep was fantastic, the prices are great, and the service and shipping times are outstanding. The Reps at Sweetwater are always there for recommendations and advice, as well as suggestions about what you may need because they have a background using what they sell. That in itself is awesome, they don't just sell the stuff, they actually use it. Highly recommend This preamp for anyone that needs one for podcasting, or wants to put it inline with their radio gear. Just remember that this is line level audio, not mic level that the radio needs, so do the research before hooking it inline to amateur radio gear.

Great Value and Inexpensive Swiss Army Knife-type Pre

By Chris D. from Pensacola, Florida
Music Background: Life-long musician and long time home studio engineer

First, at this price point, it's hard to find too many issues to nitpick over. The MIC 2200, in its various design iterations, has been on the market since the late 90s I believe; so, this supposedly refined design is tried and true to date. You would see these in project studios in the early 2000s, and you'll still see them in home project studios all over the place today.

In early 2019 I picked this two channel pre up for less than $ from Sweetwater, and shortly thereafter picked up the MDX2600 to have a low cost but solid two channel strip for just under $, which is kind of nuts to ponder if you lived through previous decades, when decent gear was cost prohibitive for most musicians. Anyway, for comparative reference, I've owned and used a number of low-end to mid-grade pres over the past 22 years of home recording and recently added some higher-end and much costlier pres to my setup. Still, the MIC2200 finds a place in my workflow and holds up well in comparison to more expensive preamps.

There's nothing especially "special" about these pres. They just work. They're not overly colored. They don't sound exactly like a true discrete or point to point tube pre. They don't have the heft of a Neve, the clarity of an API, nor the vibe of a Trident. They do have "a sound," and that sound is "pretty good" IMO.
Although a starved plate design, they do possess a certain "warmth" to their tone, and the onboard LP filter, db pad. EQ, etc.--with two channels to top it off--makes this pre extremely versatile. It's not overly aggressive, nor is it what I would consider "noisy." Mine has plenty of good and clean headroom, but once you start pushing it beyond 2:00 the noise floor will get shaky with a standard LDC. It can push a standard dynamic (sm 57) just fine without working too hard; so, it has solid levels of gain. Of course, if you want to push something like the Shure SM7b with this, it will do the job, but I still recommend a mic attenuator. You can get those cheap these days via Klark and some other off brands mic boosters/gain attenuators that will do basically the same job as my $ Cloud Lifter.

To my ears this pre competes with many other multi-hundred dollar/mid-grade pres. With that sad, you can checkout some of the shootouts and articles online yourself about the MIC2200 going back many years. There was a funny blind null test shootout that occurred a few years back on one of the online recording communities, and the Behringer was picked over many high end pres in that blind "taste test." Is it that great? You decide. To me, it's an obvious "no" in terms of it being as good as a 1k-2k pre, but it definitely punches above its weight class in terms of overall price point and bang for the buck.

Don't listen to the naysayers. If you have $ for a pre or if you're already using an interface with high quality pres then look elsewhere, as this is a great sub $ two channel pre solution; yet, if you're just getting up and running with a budget recording rig and want to mix up your preamp situation, instead of recording strictly via your USB digital interface's sterile sounding pres, this should be a serious contender. I would also recommend getting the 2 channel MDX2600 compressor; run the units in series, and you've got tone shaping options for miles. At this price point you can't go wrong. A single channel of these are as good or better than any other $ preamp I've heard or used to date.
