Chris Stapleton’s Preferred Amp

The ’62 Princeton Chris Stapleton Edition takes everything you love about a 6G2 Princeton and outfits it with the Grammy Award–winning artist’s preferred modifications. There’s loads of snappy chime and twang on tap here; although if you crank it, this 6V6-loaded combo can snarl with the best of them. The ’62 Princeton kicks out the perfect amount of volume for studio sessions — that said, it’s loud enough to rock smaller venues. Enjoy true-to-life vintage Fender tone. Embellish your playing with an output tube-biased tremolo circuit. Beyond that, Chris Stapleton’s chosen aesthetics make this amp look as great as it sounds. The ’62 Princeton Chris Stapleton Edition includes a 1-button tremolo switch and a retro-styled fabric cover.

A legendary amplifier design

When Fender originally released their Princeton guitar amplifier, their intent was to offer a good practice amplifier for guitarists needing to work on their chops. But the model quickly caught on with recording guitarists for how effortlessly it delivered both chiming cleans and sweet tube-amp breakup. Whether speaking about the original tweed designs in the 1940s or the iconic Brownface model of ’62, the Princeton has been a mainstay with players for over 50 years.

Chris Stapleton’s chosen mods

The Fender ’62 Princeton Chris Stapleton Edition combines the classic 6G2 circuit with Chris’s chosen modifications. It’s the real deal — it boasts vintage Blue tone caps, Schumacher transformers, and an output tube-biased tremolo circuit. Aesthetic touches include a rough, textured brown vinyl covering, wheat grille cloth, and thick, dark brown leather handle. It also boasts a dark brown control panel with dark brown radio knobs, an engraved brass plate with Chris Stapleton initials on its rear panel, and a retro-styled Filson twill fabric cover.

Studio stalwart

Here’s a great example of an amp whose popularity and usefulness never went away — and now it’s more popular than ever among guitarists! The ’62 Princeton combines portability, tube tone, and outright vibe to make a classic package that gets the job done for a range of styles and applications. Studio session? This amp’s 12-watt output puts it squarely in the favored small amp category that studio cats love: It’s robust enough to move some air, but the wattage is low enough to let you crank it up and let its dual 6V6 tube power section really go to work. This is how the classic tones were put to tape, and it works!

Reviews

Probably my favorite of the Fender HW series...
I own too many amps (lol) including the '64 Princeton HW and '57 Deluxe HW models, also great amps in their own right. Comparatively, the '62 Princeton has a really unique voicing. Very mid focused, warm, "woody" tone, and packs a punch for 12 watts. The trem is excellent, I love keeping it barely on, adds an additional harmonic richness to the amp for sure.

I did upgrade the tubes to NOS RCA's and had it re-biased properly (my amp tech said it was biased pretty cold from the factory), it took a really good stock amp to a great amp. Takes pedals very well (love the King of Tone through this amp) and really pops in a mix due to the mid forward voicing.

Sweetwater is always excellent to work with as is Aric Brenner.

If you have any hesitations, I can say from experience, this amp is one of the best from Fender and very unique. I greatly respect Chis Stapleton's abilities, but am not a die hard fan by any means, I sure am glad he got this one into production with Fender though! An excellent amp for sure and should last a lifetime! I am not parting with mine.
Wow
While this amp may not be for everybody it certainly excels for anyone who plays Chicago style blues, Motown, Americana (early Ry Cooder) and most early classic rock. The cleans are full and rich with plenty of low mids...excellent if you want to pair it with a jazzbox. The overdrive is very touch sensitive and bubbly.....a little rough but then again smooth. As a pedal platform it sounds great.....but be aware that there isn't much headroom in a 15 watt amp. At low volumes it would be ideal. The tremolo is really quite good...very hypnotic. These Brownface Fenders have a unique sound....somewhere between Tweed and Blackface amps. Since mine arrived it has become my favorite amp. Simply a joy to play.
IF YOU PLAY IT, YOU WILL HEAR IT.

This is an amp for someone who knows how to play well. I saw one bad review here and from the language, the guy needs a blues junior or something that will conceal his poor technique. This is not an insult. When I purchased this amp my initial response was that I wanted to return it. I sounded horrible through it. It actually took me a month or two to acclimate to this amp's demanding disposition

I must apologize to my other Amps!
Since purchasing this combo my other amps have sat quiet as I revel in the tones that the Chris Stapleton-inspired Amp puts out. Very clean at low volumes but not too bright, retains the bluesy edge that is the base of this combo. The on-board tremolo only adds to the mystique, it can hide in the background and appear as the note fades, or be in your face if you crank the tremolo. I use a Greer Southland Overdrive as my go-to overdrive, Fender Marine Layer Reverb, and a Boss Delay. My Ultra Stratocaster and Telecaster make beautiful music together. I haven't dimed out the volume yet, IMO giving the speaker time to wear in with some good hours in the low-med range will yield best results. I've already carried it out to a few jam sessions and found it to be very mobile (easy to carry). The Filson Cover is a definite plus, you don't want to spoil the good looks of this Amp. Could not be happier with this purchase. A big shout out to my SW Rep, Andy Huot for taking my order on the phone and having this heirloom amp at my doorstep the next day. Clear off a spot if you choose to purchase, this will be one that you keep! Start apologizing to your other gear in advance, it will be hard to power this one down once you have it.
GREASY!
THIS AMP IS SIMPLY GREASY. THE TREMOLO IS WHAT ALL OTHERS STRIVE TO ACCOMPLISH. THE VOLUME AT 4-5 IS JUST A PERFECT CLEAN TONE WITH JUST A BIT OF HAIR ON IT. NO NEED FOR REVERB. THIS AMP WILL FORCE YOU TO PLAY BETTER BECAUSE IT WILL AMPLIFY EVERY SINGLE THING YOU DO. IT TAKES A WHILE TO GET USED TO IT AS IT IS QUITE UNFORGIVING, BUT ONCE YOU DO EVERYTHING ELSE SEEMS LIKE A CHILD'S TOY. FENDER HIT A HOME RUN WITH THIS ONE.
