A Legit Rock Amp Head That Fits in Your Gig Bag

Looking for a 25-watt nano amp that fits in your gig bag? If so, the Hughes & Kettner Spirit of Rock deserves a close listen. Voiced for rock, this 2.5-pound guitar amplifier head delivers stadium-sized, decade-spanning tones that are guaranteed to shake a few rafters. The Spirit of Rock sounds — and feels — remarkably tube-like, thanks to its bionic Spirit Tone Generator. And since it doesn’t employ digital modeling, you get true analog, no-latency performance. You also get a Sagging control, which dials in power amp saturation with tube-like compression. A headphones output with a Red Box cabinet emulator makes practicing fun, while an unfiltered line output makes using cab IRs a piece of cake. Beyond that, the H&K Spirit of Rock’s flexible speaker outputs accommodate most cabinets, including full-sized 412 cabs. Whether you use it for practice or as the ultimate micro-sized backup amp, every rock guitarist should have one of these!

Tube amp emulation without digital modeling?

From thunderous riffs to soaring solos, the Spirit of Rock delivers everything from British leads to the coveted brown sound without digitizing your signal. And how does it achieve this? It’s called the bionic Spirit Tone Generator, and it actually mimics a tube amp’s topology via analog components. Tubes get all the glory, but every component in a tube amplifier plays a huge role in the final sound, and the Spirit of Rock's Spirit Tone Generator deploys the components that are necessary to re-create the sound of a raging tube amp.

Dial in power amp saturation with a built-in Sagging control

Many players love to buy amplifiers for the way that they sag and compress when you hit them hard with your guitar signal. The Hughes & Kettner Spirit of Rock’s built-in Sagging control fine-tunes this crucial aspect of your amp's response. The Spirit of Rock faithfully replicates the feel and sound of a real tube amp recovering from a big drop in voltage, and you're in control over how it responds.

Flexible outputs effectively cover all of your bases

At Sweetwater, we appreciate the Spirit of Rock’s flexible outputs. Its headphones output — complete with the TubeMeister 18’s Red Box cabinet emulator — makes silent practice a lot of fun. You also get an unfiltered line output, which is tailor-made for software-based cabinet impulse responses. Speaker outputs ranging from 4 to 16 ohms complete the package. Whether you use it for practice, recording, or as a great-sounding backup for live performances, H&K’s Spirit of Rock has the right outputs to cover all of your bases.

Reviews

Rock On Hughes & Kettner
This is a great-sounding H&K Nano head. I have the Spirit of rock, head. It is a really good head. I love the Tone and sagging settings. Then I crank the gain up and very much to my surprise the sound coming from this Nano head is totally awesome. Play with the master volume and the gain for nice cleans. I'm impressed.
Hughes & Kettner Spirit of Rock
Great little head.Feels very "tube-like" and responds exceptionally well to the guitar's volume control.Surprisingly nice sounding overdrive tones on its own but also takes OD pedals very well and all at just slightly larger than a pound of butter....As good as amps 3 and 4 times its cost.
Some I'm sure will find the sag and tone controls more useful than I do. I pretty much use them at around 9 or 10 o'clock and it works well for me.
I have used it with V30's in a 2X12 cab@ 8 ohms, a 1X12 open back with a Swamp Thing @16 ohms, and an open back with a Josh Smith and an Alessandro @ 4 ohms...I far and away prefer it @ 4 ohms...
Biggest issue is as it gets into over drive territory with the gain, it can get VERY noisy with the volume greater than about 8 or 9 o'clock . That being said, it is loud and clear for small/medium clubs.

At 1.1 pounds it is hard to beat . Time will tell if the technology and materials hold up.
