The Bakersfield Sound Makes Its Royal Return

Fender’s Buck Owens Kingman is a 6-string tribute to one of country music’s most enduring figureheads. After all, Buck was one of the brand’s very first adopters when Fender first went acoustic in the 1960s; if you watch recordings of his television appearances, you’ll frequently find him wielding a natural-finished Fender King. This big-bodied dreadnought wears the same red, white, and blue flair found on Buck’s most iconic guitars and supplies a strong, projecting unplugged tone courtesy of its solid spruce top, Performance X-bracing, and solid mahogany back and sides. Even the back of the comfortable C-profile mahogany neck wears stunning stripes, while elegant pearloid block inlays adorn the sleek rosewood fingerboard. And befitting a performer of Buck’s mighty stature, the Fender Buck Owens Kingman comes ready to hit the stage with a Fishman Presys VT Plus preamp system that hides its controls in the soundhole to not distract from the loud and proud top.

All-solid tonewoods worthy of the Bakersfield sound

The Fender Buck Owens Kingman is a full-featured dreadnought through and through, ready to strum out cowboy chords with the best of them, thanks to its all-solid-wood construction. This guitar’s proud and patriotic solid spruce top rings with a touch-sensitive response, aided by Fender’s innovative Performance X-bracing. Solid mahogany forms the back and sides, resulting in a bright, dry, and focused quality that’s ideal for flatpicking finesse and providing backup accompaniment for the band. There’s no denying the old-school country allure of the Fender Buck Owens Kingman aesthetics, but this dread packs a big-bodied tone to match.

Based on Buck’s striped 6-strings

Nowhere was Buck’s larger-than-life personality more apparent than in his choice of instruments, with his most iconic 6-strings emblazoned with a red, white, and blue finish. Fender’s Buck Owens Kingman pays tribute to those instruments with its own patriotic flair, which extends right down the back of the neck! Topped off with a bold blue headstock, crisp white neck and body binding, and Buck’s signature on the rear of the headstock, the Fender Buck Owens Kingman does the Bakersfield scene’s most flamboyant figure proud.

Premium plugged-in tones

Plug in the Fender Buck Owens Kingman, turn up the volume, and you’ll be rewarded with a plethora of authentic-sounding acoustic-electric tones that would sound right at home on the Hee Haw stage. The key is Fishman’s Presys VT Plus electronics that capture percussive pick attacks via the under-saddle piezo and the Kingman’s rich body resonance using an internal transducer. The result is a thoroughly inconspicuous electronics system that retains the Kingman’s vintage sonic palette while providing modern gig-ready performance.

Fender Buck Owens Kingman Features:

  • A tribute to Buck Owens’ Fender acoustics, wearing the red, white, and blue stripes found on so many of his iconic instruments
  • Solid spruce top supported by Performance X-bracing delivers a rich and responsive tone
  • Solid mahogany back and sides complement the top with a bright, crisp, and articulate voice that’s ideal for both flatpicking and cowboy-chord strumming
  • Mahogany neck in a pleasing C profile, complete with its own tri-color finish
  • Bound Indian rosewood fingerboard, sporting stylish pearloid block inlays
  • Eye-catching appointments include a tortoiseshell pickguard, retro-inspired bridge, headstock binding, and Buck’s signature on the back of the headstock
  • Vintage-style tuning machines with bright white buttons
  • Fishman Presys VT Plus preamp system gives you stage-ready acoustic-electric tones

Reviews

Rated 4.5/5
A Bakersfield Beauty

Got mine directly from Fender(now sold out) but thought I'd leave a review here so ya'll could get an idea of what you'll be receiving for your money. For some context let's remember the price point and country of origin for this guitar, sub $ and made in China. If you're expecting a top end Martin, Gibson or Taylor this is not it however you are getting a boatload of bang (and fun)for your buck (no pun intended). The hard case is very nice, fits well and protects the guitar as it should. The main feature of this guitar is of course the paint work and I gotta say, great job! Mine has flawless paint, flawless. Tuners are nice, maybe PING's? Split vintage tuners would have been nice but no biggie. Neck profile is a full C shape. Stock strings are ok, electronics are very cool. The piezo/transducer blend works well and the controls feel solid. Frets were a little sharp but not bad, a little micro mesh and now they're great. Truss rod works well and was adjusted perfectly. The nut slots were in the ballpark, only needing minor cleanup. The overall look of the nut however was rough, but again, a little sanding and polishing, all good. And yes it has a real bone nut and saddle with plastic bridge pins. The saddle was quite high and needed some work to get the action where it should be however I would much rather these things were high with room to be adjusted to taste so no biggie. One thing I really like is the strap button placement on the upper bout. It positions the guitar perfectly for playing, no forward tilt on this one! To sum things up, beautiful paint, solid electronics, nice case, after adjustment an easy player that sounds great. With the price of the old Buck Harmony guitars going through the roof these are a real winner. Have a proper setup done and you'll have a solid at an amazing price. Nice job Fender! And go Buck!!
