The Return of Danelectro's 1966 12-string

1966. Let us set the stage for you: NASA's Gemini Program is in full swing. Miniskirts are taking America by storm. And all across the globe, jangly rock anthems from the Byrds, the Beatles, and the Hollies are filling the airwaves. At the heart of it all is the 12-string electric guitar. This would be the year the Danelectro 66-12 would burst onto the scenes and the worlds of folk, rock 'n' roll, and psychedelia would be forever changed. Today's Danelectro 66-12 reissue brings the versatile tones and vintage stylings of this pop icon right to your stage and session. Its semi-hollow alder body supplies a warmth, snap, and resonance that'll creep their way into your busiest tracks. And with its full-service pickup complement — an offset neck single-coil and a dual-lipstick bridge humbucker with a push/pull pot to split coils— you've got a banquet of sparkly, syrupy 12-string textures right at your fingertips, with a saccharine clean and a crunchy bite that will shape your parts in exciting ways. And if you're looking for playability, today's 66-12 delivers. Its C-shaped maple neck and pau ferro fingerboard supply comfort and streamline fret access, no matter what your playing style. With its avant-garde styling and far-reaching tonal armament, the Danelectro 66-12 electric guitar from Sweetwater is one 12-string you won't want to pass up.

Classic controls with a modern twist

The Danelectro 66-12 ships to you with a master volume control, a master tone control, and a 3-way switch. But don't be fooled by its streamlined setup: there are tons of sweet-and-salty sonic textures to be found within this unassuming 12-string. The secret lies in its vintage-styled offset single-coil neck pickup and dual-lipstick bridge humbucker. We at Sweetwater are big fans of lipstick humbuckers and their thick, powerful attack. When you're running through a dirty amp, you'll get a ton of crunch and low-end response without losing definition. Meanwhile, a clean amp can create awesome jazz tones. If that's not enough, the tone control has a push/pull pot that splits the humbucker for added spank, sparkle, and chime.

Vintage-styled Semi-hollowbody construction

Danelectro is known for its instantly recognizable body designs and avant-garde styling. The 66-12 is no different. This reverse-offset body shape simply drips with vintage vibe and distinctive Danelectro styling. The semi-hollow construction adds sustain and extra presence to the sound. Thanks to the alder centerblock, it won't feed back as easily under high gain. The maple neck has a curvy headstock, die-cast tuners and a 14" radius pau ferro fingerboard that work together to complete the vintage look of the Danelectro 66-12.

Reviews

amazing 12-String
Really like this Daniel. I have owned 4 rickenbacker 12s, 2 epi 12s, 2 Agile 12s and a Reverend Airwave plus a Danelectro 59x12 and this is my favorite. I had it Plekked and it turned out incredible. Best intonation put of the box than any of 12s
Sounds exceeded my expectations. Thanks Dustin for all your help..
.
Better than expected, good value at this price point.
Arrived well packed and with no problems. Fit and finish are excellent and actually look better in person. A really good alternate guitar to my more traditional collection, adds a bunch of tones and texture that are a little out of the ordinary. Came almost in tune, no issues anywhere and the build quality was better than I expected at this price range. No high frets, fret ends well dressed, a well cut nut and intonation is spot on. The action is a little high for my personal taste but the saddles have lots of adjustment to lower a 64th, so I will lower that. Glad I pulled the trigger, sweet water service and 55 point inspection are excellent.
Throw your Rickenbacker in the fireplace.
Danelectro have raided the Temple of Rick and kicked over the altar. The Rick 12's are the Stratocasterhtat for years have never had a Les Paul.
Rickenbacker, you no longer have a monopoly. There's a new kind of "Jangle and Chime" on the block. And, frankly (IMO) it comes in a guitar containing what may be far more tonal and dynamic breadth and versatility than yours do.

I'm going to focus on the unusual stuff here, because I'm sure other reviews will cover the usual boring 12-string things. I want to point out what makes this guitar DIFFERENT.

1. The neck is wide enough to play. That's right, you can hear all of the notes. How novel is that?
2. It intonates properly.
3. "Jangle and Chime" like Ricks have, but ENTIRELY unlike Ricks- and every other electric 12!
4. The bridge - Oh, that bridge! It's genius! Why didn't anyone think of that already? High mass, half of the strings through ferrules, half through the bridge! DUH-REKA!
5. Oh, my goodness, that Lipbucker! It actually made my little old Fender tube pre break up.
6. Wait, wait- you can hear all of the notes... it intonates... so what happened when I slammed a big ol' chord?
It SLAMMED! I have *never, ever* heard an electric 12 do what thing did. I've tried a bunch over the years, too. I though you couldn't get them to *do* that.

I hope, were Semie Moseley alive to see this Korean knock-off of his designs mixed up with the weirdo vintage Danelectro influence, he would appreciate it.
Maybe he'd be ticked off, but I hope he'd appreciate it. Because it's good- VERY GOOD. And, like his guitars, it's timber is bright. VERY BRIGHT.
Rickenbacker, heh, heh. OMG, this guitar is sooo much cooler than both of the Ricks I was looking at. I could have BOUGHT one of them. I didn't. I bought THIS because I LOVE it!!!!!!!!!!!

It also smokes the pants off of the '66 Starfire I'd been playing.
