A Modern PRS with Vintage Character

Offering a perfect amalgamation of vintage personality and modern reliability, the PRS S2 Vela Semi-Hollow Satin brandishes a charming, offset-shaped mahogany body with the addition of a semi-hollow body and an F-hole for maximum attitude and resonance. You'll appreciate the comfortable playability of this semi-hollowbody electric guitar's mahogany neck and 22-fret rosewood fingerboard. The S2 Vela Semi-Hollow Satin's USA-made pickups and electronics comprise a DS-01 humbucker at the bridge and a Narrowfield mini humbucker in the neck position, along with a coil tap that unlocks a complete arsenal of spanky single-coil textures. You also get a PRS plate-style bridge with brass saddles, ensuring spot-on intonation and ear-grabbing sustain, and PRS Phase III non-locking tuners for stability — originally seen on the PRS Core line. Anchored by Paul Reed Smith's vaunted playability and craftsmanship, the S2 Vela Semi-Hollow Satin is the perfect axe for guitarists searching for a fresh PRS playing experience.

PRS craftsmanship with a fresh aesthetic

The S2 Vela Semi-Hollow Satin brandishes a semi-hollow mahogany body with a contoured offset shape that sets it apart from the rest of the guitars in Paul Reed Smith's stable. Once you pick it up, however, you'll relish in the familiar — and eminently comfortable — playability of this guitar's Pattern Regular neck carve, and its 22-fret, 10-inch-radius rosewood fingerboard is the perfect launchpad for the gamut of musical finger gymnastics. This vintage-inspired guitar is simply bursting with flavorful personality, making it a perfect slam dunk for players searching for something a bit off the beaten path or for die-hard PRS devotees looking for a new twist.

USA-made pickups and electronics

Jam-packed with USA-made, pickguard-loaded pickups and electronics, the PRS S2 Vela Semi-Hollow Satin bursts with attitude-laden tone. This guitar's PRS DS-01 bridge humbucker yields a bright, punky tone with a bell-like quality that tackles overdriven leads and crystalline cleans with equal assurance. At the neck, you'll find a PRS Narrowfield humbucker that delivers the best characteristics of a humbucker, a P-90, a traditional single-coil, and a mini humbucker, all blended in a single glorious sonic cocktail. To top it off, the S2 Vela Semi-Hollow Satin includes a push-pull coil tap on its tone knob, which provides access to an array of tempting single-coil textures.

High-performance hardware

The guitarists here at Sweetwater have found the S2 Vela Semi-Hollow Satin to be among the most stable semi-hollow electric guitars around. This is not only due to PRS's stringent manufacturing standards but also to its superior hardware. The S2 Vela Semi-Hollow Satin's PRS plate-style bridge is as rock-solid as they come. Harkening back to Paul Reed Smith's early designs, this aluminum-plate bridge features two compensated brass saddles that ensure on-target intonation and near-endless sustain. What's more, this bridge is top-loading for lightning-fast string changes. The S2 Vela Semi-Hollow Satin also flaunts PRS Phase III non-locking tuners — originally seen on the PRS Core line — that not only keep your guitar in tune but also make restringing a piece of cake.

Reviews

The Most Comfortable Guitar
I absolutely love my Vela. I have been playing for over 20 years and after 5 minutes of the Vela, it became my favorite guitar to play, without it even being plugged in yet. I agree with what others have said about the knobs being to easy to move, however it is something you get used to.

The new Velas are GREAT.
So I had an earlier Vela and I loved it. I sold it after a while because I felt it overlapped with other guitars I owned... I regretted this almost instantly. I recently noticed that PRS had updated the neck pickup to a Narrow-Field humbucker--the new satin finishes with pearl also caught my eye. My always awesome advisor Jason Filaramo helped me find this guitar. I had planned to get a Mavis Green Guitar but gave this a chance since it was in stock--I am so glad I did. This Pearl White paint is absolutely stunning in person.

Long story short, the updated vela is everything I loved about the original Vela, but with a nicer finish and improved pickups. If you want something with humbuckers, but lean toward Fender tones, this might be your guitar. I own Fender guitars almost exclusively. I've had a few Gibsons and other PRS Guitars, but never got on with any of them for long.

The Vela, for me, is a keeper. It's light (mine is 5 pounds 9 oz), doesn't have neck dive, has great tonal options, and just sounds fantastic across a wide range of musical applications. As always, with PRS, setup, frets, etc. were perfect out of the box.

I'm thrilled to have a Vela back in the studio.

This is a nice guitar
After some alone time with this guitar, I've come to terms with it. It's pretty nice.

I really like the no nonsense strat-like simplicity. Everything about it was designed around lightweight and balanced comfort. It succeeds at that with its off-set semi-hollow mahogany body construction, aluminum components, open back tuners, only 2 pickups, rosewood fingerboard. Paul put effort into this area and it shows. Mine is just under 6 lbs.

It has its own sound, that takes some time to find. It's a little delicate. Sensitive. Responsive if given the room.

It's easy to saturate and overdrive the pickups. Less is more.

Give it room and it will respond in a
delightful way. I grabbed it by the throat and demanded that it rage, and it was a mess. It's not that.

The white satin finish is striking, though the bird inlays aren't as stark white as the body, which is less than appealing. I'd buy another today if it had an ebony fretboard with pearl inlays.

I also didn't like the feel of the pots, but that was quickly forgotten. They work just fine.

If you want a well built USA guitar, for less than the price of a used car, this my might be it.
Music background: I build guitars as a hobby. I buy them to see how well mine compare.
Mostly Awesome
Sweetwater buying experience top notch as always.

Guitar looks beautiful. Fit, finish, size, weight, it's all there.

However, the pots, while functional, have a terrible sloppy scratchy loose feel. Subjective maybe, but warranty be damned, I'll be replacing them first chance I get. Disappointed that Paul let a guitar, at any price point, out of his shop with such low quality pots.

You don't even have to play guitar to know that PRS instruments are in a league of their own. With their exquisitely figured tops and premium appointments, each PRS is a playable work of art. But it goes way deeper than the surface. Every time Paul visits Sweetwater, we get a deeper look at his amazing instruments. We've even hosted several PRS Custom Shop events, complete with Paul's personal Wood Library! Whether they're his most affordable SE electric guitars, top-quality acoustics, or amps, it's always amazing to see what PRS comes up with. What's more, we keep a ton of PRS guitars in our amazing Guitar Showroom, so the staff at Sweetwater can get hands on with all of their latest models. We'd love to tell you all about them.
