A Tribute to Kramer’s Golden Age

Kramer’s The 84 pays homage to one of the most influential solidbody electric guitars of all time (hint: it was covered with red, black, and white stripes). This built-for-performance axe centers around a Pacer-esque alder body, along with a hard-rock maple neck and fast-playing 12"-radius fingerboard. Plug into your favorite high-gain stack, and you’ll experience classic hot-rodded humbucker tones, courtesy of a Seymour Duncan JB bridge pickup. No self-respecting shred guitar would be complete without a double-locking tremolo, and The 84 includes the gold standard — a Floyd Rose. The 84 features an easy-access truss rod, rock-solid die-cast tuners, and an eye-grabbing matching banana-style headstock.

Stripped-down, high-performance shred machine

Loosely based on Kramer’s Pacer model, The 84 is a stripped-down, high-performance shred machine. Its lightweight alder body exhibits a classic, balanced-sounding tone that’s ready to roar. Its hard-rock maple neck features an easy-playing K-Speed SlimTaper “C” profile, while its lightning-fast 12"-radius fingerboard features a 25.5" scale and 22 medium-jumbo frets. The 84 sports an easy-access truss rod for quick neck adjustments and a matching banana-style headstock with a historic Kramer logo.

Seymour Duncan JB humbucker — built to rock hard

Kramer’s The 84 was built for hard rock. And it rocks hard, thanks to its zebra-colored Seymour Duncan JB humbucker. This pickup is one of the most popular in the world, serving up the classic sound of a hot-rodded humbucker. You know, that sound — the one we've all loved for the last 30 years. This scorcher boasts plenty of output without sacrificing tone, and it adds harmonics, sustain, and the perfect amount of distortion to your playing. The 84 includes a single knurled volume knob with a push/pull for a series parallel tap.

Floyd Rose tremolo for twisting, bending, and dive-bombing

Do you dive-bomb? Shriek? Squeal? Flutter? Of course you do! Otherwise, you wouldn’t be on Sweetwater.com looking at shred machines like The 84. Similar to other high-performance solidbody electric guitars, The 84 comes equipped with a rock-solid Floyd Rose double-locking trem. It can be used for subtle vibrato or full-blown dive bombs — the choice is yours. Either way, you’ll experience the same response and tuning stability that you'd expect from a Floyd Rose. Whether you use it or abuse it, you'll have trouble knocking The 84 out of tune.

AWESOME GUITAR!!!

My 3rd guitar (all from Sweetwater). Just purchased the Kramer "The 84" in Matte White. Easy purchase. Arrived on time and in perfect condition. I gave it a quick tune and it was ready to play with no issues whatsoever. Camden, my Sweetwater Sales Engineer, replied to my numerous questions as always. I pulled the trigger and couldn't be happier. What a beautiful guitar. I highly recommend this guitar. Thanks, Canden Uhazy! Thanks Sweetwarer!

Very sick

Perfectly set up in standard out of the box, it was pretty easy to drop down to d standard and get everything level on the floyd rose. The single switch pick up is a lot of fun, you can roll down the volume knob for a cleaner tone, but I like to have it all the way up on the humbucker setting and run it through a proco rat, very classic 80's metal tone. There were no noticeable defects, the paint job is sweet, the neck didn't require any shim or anything, the action was perfect out of the box. The allen wrenches fixed to the headstock is an awesome addition that really makes tweaking it real quick an easy process. I don't know the exact radius but I found it to be a lot flatter than my other modern guitars, takes no time at all to get used to though. Overall I have nothing bad to say about it, it's awesome, highly recommend if you want a fun 80's metal guitar.

Back to the Eighties

I am loving this 80s style rocker with its matte white finish, shiny hardware and zebra Seymour Duncan. This is going to be my go to guitar when I want to jam to 80s hard rock! The Floyd Rose stays in tune, the neck feels great and the pickup helps me get that VH sound I could not get with my other guitars no matter how much I tweaked my amp and effects.

This Kramer '84 Works AMAZINGLY...if You Let It!

Having a few FR-equipped SuperStrats in my "stable", AND being a big fan of Van Halen output from the first half of the '80s, I figured I'd have to take this one out for an extended "spin" to see if it "delivers the goods".
It's turning out to be revelatory!
It seems that virtually ALL of the design and construction elements that have gone into this guitar are what's TRULY needed to achieve the EVH sound from that period.
The Alder body and non-routed Floyd Rose contribute to keeping the level of mechanical sustain in check enough to promote clarity without killing harmonic properties. (It's also the only FR I'm using that needs ALL THREE springs to properly hold Eb Standard tuning in "full-float" mode.)
The pickup voicing and output are optimized to the point where any additional compression just muddies the tone; and the coil tap feature provides additional tonal articulation without sacrificing output or adding noise (kind of like a P-100). Very useful!
I've not been much of a fan of bare maple "fretboards"; and a standard (more or less) "C"-shape neck and 12" constant radius board probably wouldn't be my first choice for speed and accuracy...but, in this case, it's worth making an exception! Also, the mid-jumbo frets are interesting in that they are not particularly "tall"; so there's less chance of shifting it out of tune by slight changes in grip. (One note of complaint: the frets could have used the polishing they did not receive at the factory.)
The '84 is very comfortable to play: The "ergos" are nearly perfect, inspiring an appropriately aggressive attack. It's good fun! Speaking of "good fun", the basic matte finish is going to be the "canvas" inspiring a custom paint scheme, too. Stay tuned!
Eddie and the Kramer builders obviously knew what they were doing when they "sent" the original...and thankfully, Gibson knew to leave "well enough alone" with The '84!

Good, not great

So I believe I have one of the first of these out in the wild, I don't normally do reviews but given the limited info available, what the hell. The guitar came from Sweetwater in 9 days, which I think is reasonable with all the covid stuff going on. Out of the box, the set up was good, and it arrived without any sort of damage. I've seen better packaging, I've seen worse as well. The routing for the pickup was pretty good, but the routing for the truss rod adjustment was rough. So much so that some of the paint didn't take. Not a major deal as you would likely never notice it, but on an $800 guitar, kinda not okay. There was also some glue or something near the pickup cavity on the body. I was able to scrape it off, so no harm no foul in my book. The neck itself is straight, the natural satin finish is thin and smooth, and the piece of maple they used on mine is pretty nice. The frets aren't sharp, but they desperately need to be polished. They have a very gritty feel when bending that makes vibrato almost impossible, especially on the higher frets. Also, even though it doesn't say anything about having a fingerboard with rolled edges, it would've been nice if there was even a little bit smoother of an edge on it. It's not so sharp as to cut you, but it definitely leaves a lot to be desired. The weight is fine, it's just heavy enough to feel like a solid instrument without being Les Paul heavy and causing back and shoulder issues. The only thing I can't complain about is the one part I thought I would despise, the Floyd. The FRT 1000 is great. Given that I've only owned originals, I figured this would be a similar thing to the Floyd Rose special (junk). However it's great. I can't knock it out of tune. I'm not a massive Floyd user anyways, most of my guitars are hard tails, but there's no reason to worry about this one if you are. All in all, I think it's a solid guitar. Most of my gripes are little things due to high expectations and standards. If you're after a no BS, no extra features, simple guitar, this is definitely a solid contender. I do think that for an extra $60, you're getting a lot more guitar out of something from charvel in the San dimas line. If the extra pickup and selectors, as well as a recessed Floyd, are a deal breaker for you just like they were for me, this has a lot of potential to be an amazing guitar. Just be prepared to take it to a tech and have a little finishing and polishing done. Good buy, great service from Sweetwater.
