Epiphone Vs. Gibson: The Guitar Rivalry That Shaped Music History
While Epiphone’s roots lie in early stringed instruments, it wasn’t until the early 1900s in New York that the company shifted focus to more popular formats — eventually establishing itself as a major force in the electric guitar world. By the 1930s and ’40s, Epiphone had become Gibson’s chief rival in the archtop market, with both brands pushing innovation and competing for dominance among jazz and big band guitarists.
This rivalry continued until the mid-20th century, when Epiphone owner Epaminondas “Epi” Stathopoulos passed away and his younger brothers took over. Gibson acquired Epiphone in 1957, folding its longtime competitor into the Gibson family and positioning Epiphone as their more accessible alternative. Epiphone would quickly rise again with the advent of rock ’n’ roll and the British Invasion, when artists such as Roy Orbison, the Rolling Stones, the Beatles, and the Kinks began wielding Epiphone guitars onstage and in the studio.
