This is my best guitar buying experience

By Dustin Burdick from Land O' Lakes, FL on April 10, 2024

I'm extremely happy with this guitar.
This "demo" looks brand new.
It also came set up better than any guitar I've ever purchased.

Really

Really nice. Playable. Enjoyable. Very natural feeling. Green!

Simple adjustment and this guitar came to life!!

By Greg R from Missouri on May 12, 2023 Music Background: Professional and studio

Going to get right into it. If you purchase this guitar and you find your action or strings feel tight....loosen the tail stop piece 1/4 turn to the left (counter clock) see how the strings feel (suggestion only but it does work). its a balance, dont go too far or not enough, very simple. It is something ive done to the guitar and it changed everything for me.
Its not a beginner guitar or a pro guitar, its a dang good solid guitar!! doesn't matter you skill level. It is unique so I would not purchase it as something to begin with actually. I got mine for a deal, I'm not an SG or Les Paul player. I'm a strat, tele guy. Let me say, the p90's in this green machine sound fantastic. I personally love the P90 sound, (single coil on steroids) so, now guess which guitar is right there with my strat and tele? the SG, I now use it in my shows, it works great in our band list of songs. its got its own place, just like the others. I'm just sooooo happy I found that by adjusting the stop tail piece it changed everything! no I did not lose sustain, or anything goofy. If you are into SG's or p90 pick ups....buy it!!

Really Nice

By Marc from Blairstown, NJ on March 19, 2023

I needed a backup guitar set up for Doom Metal in case my main SG went down for a while. These guitars a beautiful in person. I was lucky to get a pretty dark green. Very light and comfortable to play. Hardware is super solid. I fully intended to swap out the pickups when I got it but after receiving it and playing it, I think I'm going to keep them. They're remarkably clear when tuned down and drowned in fuzz. A pleasant surprise. A really fun to play, excellent sounding guitar that looks killer.

Green Sabbath

By Joe Lab from Pennsylvania on May 25, 2022 Music Background: Guitar/Bass Player and Singer in Hard Rock/Metal for 15+ years

I bought this beauty back in October 2021, and it has become my go to guitar for riff writing and recording! The P90 pickups in this really combine bright/hot Strat sounds with round/creamy Les Paul sounds. The worn Inverness Green finish is utterly flawless, especially when you see it in person! The neck is extremely playable, controlled, and well balanced. I'm mainly a hard rock/heavy metal player, so anyone looking to get those "Black Sabbathy," "Heaven and Helly," or "Iron Maideny" tones should fine this instrument to be a more than capable workhorse! And with a price point under $, this thing would make even the SG King himself (Tony Iommi) blush!

A huge thank you to my sales engineer, Mr. Jared Kalish, for always making sure my gear is in tip top shape and ready to be played as soon as it arrives at my door and I take it out of the box! This is the 5th guitar I've purchased from Sweetwater, and I have my 6th one on the way! With the special financing options and the excellent customer service, buying from Sweetwater is a no brainer! It's almost like they are giving gear away with these amazing promotions/deals! So, my advice… Grab one of these inexpensive beauties when they restock, or be doomed to wander the wasteland without this killer axe for all eternity!

What a unique instrument!

The overall feel is incredible. The p90s are wickedly delicious. Nothing but tasty chops flowing from this modestly priced behemoth. Thank you for the swift and amazing attention from the shipping department! Warehouse folk are Unsung heroes for real!

Amazing

By Mitchell Radford from NEW BALTIMORE, MI on February 22, 2022 Music Background: Self-taught

For the price in my opinion, it's been an amazing instrument with incredible qualities to me I loved it since the day I had gotten it! The feel of it in your hands it's just right its balanced very well in weight. I've always wanted an SG with P90's always a dream guitar my buddy stripped his Gibson down and stained it red years back I always wanted that guitar! Once I had seen this, I just went on here to look at a new guitar not planning on buying that day, but I was like Yup! I'm by no means a guitar god or anything like that but I've learned more and more since I've gotten this baby. There were some things that seemed off to me and such but I'm sure that's just me my OCD some would say this isn't that much money but for me it is. I'm super happy with the sounds I can get out of this thing its incredible. This might help a little for some, But Epiphone has done it right on this one love how it sounds on and off of an amp.

SG 2nd review

By Donnie D from IL on January 16, 2022 Music Background: Long time player

I sent a review in November when 1st getting this Guitar. Again. Chris Ishak was awesome at Sweet-Water.

You can't go wrong here whether a Pro or Parlor Musician. The new Epiphones are equal to their piers in G-land.

Do what I did; buy Epi SG and spend $ on a Supro Delta King 10 Amp($ ahead of the game). Perfect Combo for anything you can play.\

Thanks Sweetwater and Epiphone

SG

Awesome piece of wood. Didn't expect much for the dollars. Chris Ishak at Sweetwater had this set up to my specs; 11's. perfect out of box on delivery. Intonation perfect.

Tried my old '49 MASCO 1st. It was a little overwhelmed by P\U output 'Those PUPs do have some power

2nd was Ampeg Reverb Rocket; perfect match. Went from Blues to Sabbath. Wow. Nice guitar. Would not hesitate on this for the price. I may upgrade tuners someday. Also, may have a good luthier add a nitro lacquer finish(see where that goes). This is a solid guitar to modify to your quest. The 'Green' is really cool. PUPs are amazing.

Solid working Guitar.

Thanks again to Chris at Sweetwater

I've always played Blackguards; and still will, but this is a good piece to add for recording and shows to anyone's arsenal.

Epiphone does it again

By Martin Hensel from Polson, MT on October 27, 2021

I have owned many guitars, and I have become extremely fond of the products put out by Epiphone. They build a quality guitar and are perfect for any style musician. I really wanted a guitar the had a pair o P-90's. This guitar delivered in spades. The neck is great and it sounds amazing. I love having all the different combinations of sounds that I want when I'm recording. Epiphone builds quality instruments that you can not only feel confident that you got your money's worth, but instruments that will last a long time.

Amazing value

By Sweetwater Customer on September 21, 2021

I have to say, this guitar is amazing for the price. The P-90s sound great and the playability is top notch. Epiphone guitars are notorious for scratchy frets, but this one is the exception to the rule. Sure, the worn satin finish doesn't look high-end, but it feels broken in right out of the box. The tuners, bridge, and tailpiece all seem solid too. If you're looking for a workhorse instrument with P-90 tone, look no further. Get one'

Just Amazing

By Eli on December 27, 2020

Epiphone does it again !

By Martin Hensel from Polson, MT on October 18, 2020

I ordered this guitar in Inverness Green and it a spectacular. Epiphone builds excellent, well built instruments, that are a great deal. With the two P90 pickups, there is a huge variety of tones available. The guitar is well built, well finished, and the case was another smart thing to order. This guitar is made to last, even when played hard. As always, my sales rep Joe James was exceptional as always. If you have many needs, he is the man. Thanks Joe !

From SG Classic to THE KRAKEN

By John Rose from GREENWOOD, MS on August 18, 2020

I have heard a number of complaints about Epiphones over the years, but once I saw this and heard it played in a video review I knew I had to have one, because the Inverness green finish was absolutely gorgeous and the sound was great. The actual guitar in person is even better than what I heard! Somebody up at Epiphone has made them up their game, because this is a great-sounding and feeling guitar, perfectly balanced and unusually light for mahogany. It has a LOUD tone even when you play it unplugged; the body and neck are very resonant. And if you're worried about the P-90's humming, worry not; these don't hum at all. If you've never played them, the single-coil P-90 sound is much different from a Strat. It's not glassy and is very clear with a good bottom end and midrange, and shapes beautifully with pedals.

I like to customize all of my guitars, so with the addition of some aftermarket parts and decals, this guitar has taken its place in my collection as THE KRAKEN. Get one of these if you want to get a new guitar; you will NOT regret it.

Nice!

By MA from DENVER, CO on February 26, 2024 Music Background: 45 years n counting

Let me preface this review by saying I bought this for the wood with full intentions of modding it. I personally dont care much for p-90s,(excluding duncans or fishman), and had a good set of 'buckers I'd gotten in trade for doing a friend's guitar. Out of the box it played wonderfully, was reasonably setup, and sounded like a p90 axe.
The wood throughout the body is more of a green stain finished with a sealer, which is what I wanted. near the headstock I could feel a little bit of rough sanding that's usually fixed by the poly or nitro finish. a good buffing with a 3m pad took care of everything without removing color, and just cause I'm a little picky, I did a final seal with furniture grade tung oil. That really brought out the color and grain. Neck was arrow straight, frets ends smooth out of the box, but got a polishing anyway since I had it stripped down anyway. I kept the classic style tuners, they're good n tight, and remind me of my old '59 LP.
After some routing (it was routed for p90 only), full cavity shielding, new pickguard and pups, good metric push/pull pots and orange drop caps, custom wiring.... I did mention this was a mod project, right? The end result was an incredibly versatile SG that's lighter than my Tele. The only downside is that this now gets played more than my "real" Gibby SG.

Fantastic bang for the buck

By Steve B from WA on December 12, 2023

If you're looking for a P90 guitar, I'm not sure you can get a better value than this. The pickups are good and versatile. They take gain like a champ but clean up really nicely rolling off the volume. You can roll off the treble without it getting too muddy. It does everything from warm jazzy tones to blues to rock to doom metal without sounding out of place.

I popped for a Sweetwater setup and a bone nut upgrade on this. The nut upgrade was probably unnecessary but I don't regret it. I had the action lowered a bit on the bass side. It plays great. Frets are pretty nice... no fret sprout or sharp edges. I don't feel any compelling need to go nuts polishing them, but maybe I'll have a go at them next string change. The finish makes it feel nice and played-in. I'm interested in seeing how it ages.

It does have a bit of that neck dive SGs are notorious for, but it's nothing a half-decent strap can't take care of, and I only notice it if I play it sitting down with no strap.

I've seen people doing reviews on YouTube say (and show) that Indian Laurel fretboards get some kind of brown stuff on their fingers. I've played this axe for hours and haven't seen this. Maybe it's a body chemistry thing, I don't know.

Thanks to Sales Engineer Jeff and Sweetwater's luthiers for making sure it arrived set up to my liking. As always, a great experience buying from Sweetwater.

Lean, green, music machine.

I'm very happy with my new Epiphone P90 Inverness Green Worn guitar!
It's as light and comfortable as advertised. It's a player with a slim neck. The dual tone and volume knobs are great for giving you total control over the sound of the pickups, which are great. I'm used to humbuckers but the P90s have become my favorite's . I'm more into trying classic rock songs from the 60s and 70s that just sound right with this guitar. Also Ian was a great tech who helped me with expiditing my order! Thanks Ian.

I got this guitar for the P90's

By Rick Elliott from California on May 26, 2023

The playability of the guitar is good, after a proper setup. Very light. The color (sound-wise) of the pickups add a nice alternative to my other guitars.

Love it,. won't stay in tune

By Sweetwater Customer from OH on January 28, 2024

Great axe.... Even with graphtech it will not remain in tune. Drives me nuts.

Excellent Quality

By Mitch from Hanover Pa on May 17, 2023 Music Background: Hobbyist

I was a bit surprised how good this guitar really is.
The quality on here exceeded my expectations. This is the first p90 guitar I ever had and where this shines is playing it clean with no high gain. The only thing I may have to do is lower the action a little. Very playable out of the box.
I highly recommend this guitar.

Not bad!

By Sweetwater Customer from Missouri on September 17, 2021 Music Background: Ambient music, black metal, doom

I took a gamble and thought I'd go with this one. I initially thought the green was hideous and only bought it because it was the only one in stock, but it really grew on me in transit to my apartment, and it actually looks really nice in person. I play doom metal and it fits the aesthetic really well. For a guitar that costs less than my delay pedal, this thing absolutely kills it. My only complaint is that the guitar was shipped with 10's but the intonation was off, and the bridge saddles max out before the proper adjustment. So the first couple strings on mine are flat but not horribly so. The other thing is that the pickups are pretty decent but not quite as clear as I'd like. They're pretty quiet, even with janky power supplies for my pedals. The incredibly thin finish makes the guitar ring really well, and it's extremely light and being an SG it's inherently thin and snappy sounding, which is a huge bonus. Their cost saving measures take what you like about the SG and make it....more. The frets are really nice, no complaints here. The neck binding feels good, the neck is comfortable and the finish feels nice, even for someone who prefers finished necks. The controls are all responsive but get a little dark when you start to turn down the tone. All around a great buy. You'd probably really like this thing. All of my other guitars are USA made and really nice and this one fits right in (after new pickups)

Nice inexpensive guitar

By Randy on September 13, 2021

I have had mine for 6 months now and it plays great. No bad frets , really no issues except for the tuner's being the tiny head button knobs. Stays in tune fine though. P-90's are noisy anyhow but the gate takes care of it with no serious cut off. Can't beat it for the price.

It's OK. Good for a practice guitar and a beginner.

By Brian from Arizona on February 27, 2023 Music Background: 40+ years of playing electric guitar (rock/electric blues/heavy metal)

I bought this guitar because of all the talk about P90's that I read about. It's an inexpensive guitar so if I wasn't happy, I'm not out a lot of money and I can return it.

The color is nice. There weren't any nicks, cuts, or scratches anywhere on the guitar. The neck is in good shape and the fretboard is fine. No dead notes on the fretboard or loud fret buzz (there was a little on the low E string). The P90 pickups have a good punch. They sound a little better than the single coil pickups on my Fender Strat. And definitely sound better with distortion. All the knobs work and the toggle switch works.

I immediately checked for fret sprout and there was some from the 1st to the 3rd fret on the bottom side. It was an easy fix with my fret file and was corrected in about 2 minutes. There was some as well on the top side, but I fixed that as well within a few minutes. The bridge action was set really high for some reason (8/64 low E, 6/64 high E). I lowered to standard setting of 6/64 low E, 4/64 high E. I don't like the rough feel on the neck. I realize this isn't a Gibson, but Epiphone could have smoothed the back of the neck for easy hand movement.

If you're a beginner, this is a nice guitar. If you've been playing for decades like I have, it's OK but not great (you get what you pay for). As a reminder, I bought this guitar for the P90 pickup's, and I didn't want to spend a fortune.

I'll keep this guitar because it looks nice, light weight, and the P90 pickups sound really good.

My sales engineer (Shaka Dhladhla) contacted me right after I purchased this guitar, and gave me 2-day shipping.

Thanks to Sweetwater for great customer service. My guitar came double boxed and on time. This is my 10th electric guitar that I've purchased from Sweetwater.

nice guitar.

By scott on November 9, 2022 Music Background: metal. blues.

plays ok. this is my first guitar with p90s. they sound great. but I didn't know I had to buy a noise supresser pedal or get copper wrap for the wiring,to get rid of the noise.. its worse than a fender single coil.

OK for the price, but not great

By Ken on February 8, 2021

I bought one of these on a whim because I wanted some P90 pickups in an SG and I liked the weird green finish. After a discount I was under the "list" price out the door after tax. Still, you get what you pay for...or in this case, don't get what you don't pay for, and then have to pay to add it.

If you have some luthier skills, and are willing to do some upgrades, you can make it play well. It can also be a potential "platform" for various pickups to be installed due to the batwing pickguard. I haven't pulled that off to see what the routing is for the pickups. But whatever it is, it can be modified and covered by the batwing.

PROS
- decent sounding P90 pickups
- bound neck
- slim taper neck profile
- cool color
- Batwing pickguard, not usually my preference for SGs but on this one it works, and allows "project platform"

CONS
- Fretwork was pretty terrible - many unlevel frets (at least 1/3). I did a fret level myself. Before that it was buzzy.
- Nutwork wasn't great. At least they were not low. But the slots were very high....030 to .035 over the first fret. Likely done to help offset the terrible fretwork.
- Tuners are low quality. I upgraded to drop-in replacement Kluson Revolution Locking tuners. Huge improvement.
- Bridge hardware quality is poor. On mine, adjusting the string height is difficult - hard to turn and the bridge doesn't fit on the stud properly on one side so it binds a little when you are adjusting. Once in place it functions but this is some of the worst hardware I've ever adjusted.
- Finish work spotty. Mine has some poor sanding around the headstock - little marks that should have been sanded out and weren't.
- No case. I added a Gibson soft bag.

UNDECIDED
- Worn Satin finish - well...I'm sure it was cheap and fast to apply. I don't mind the look but I'm not crazy about the feel of it on the back of the neck. This finish is not going to be durable over the long haul, but on an inexpensive guitar, it's ok.

I didn't buy it from Sweetwater, but these are not issues any dealer addresses at setup. I'm happy with my purchase at the price, but they really should do at least a little better job on the nut and fret work.
