Inspired by the Iconic 1959 Les Paul

The Epiphone 1959 Les Paul Standard supplies all of the hallmarks of the unforgettable '59 Gibson — the figured AAA maple top, that lean and mean late-'50s neck profile, and those crystal-clear Gibson PAF pickups — at an irresistible price. And take it from guitarists at Sweetwater: this thing really delivers. Whether you've always wanted a true '59 and didn't want to fork over the cash, or even if you're a proud collector and just want an instrument to take out on the road, the Epiphone 1959 Les Paul Standard has the looks and features you've been searching for. Solid mahogany and maple tonewoods. A "VOS-like" aged gloss finish. Premium pots and hardware. It's all here in the ready-to-rock Epiphone 1959 Les Paul Standard from Sweetwater. No upgrades required.

Premier tonewoods, head to toe

The late-'50s Les Paul recipe is maple on mahogany. And that's exactly what you get in the Epiphone 1959 Les Paul Standard. The solid AAA flame maple cap boasts a rich natural figuring and imparts a snappy tonal quality to the rich, resonant, full-weight mahogany body. The 24.75-inch-scale mahogany neck sports the slimmed-down medium "C" profile reminiscent of true '59s, along with the 12-inch radius and medium-jumbo frets these guitars are known for.

Gibson pickups with premium pots and caps

In 1959, Gibson really dialed in the response of its Seth Lover PAF ("Patent Applied For") pickups. Nowhere is this iconic sound better captured than in Gibson's USA-made Burstbucker pickups. The Epiphone 1959 Les Paul Standard comes stock with a set of these sought-after beauties wired into a set of Mallory 150 polyester film caps, with CTS pots and a Switchcraft toggle and jack to supply years of proven performance. Take it from Sweetwater: this is no "mod platform" Les Paul. It comes stock with top-shelf components straight out the Gibson Custom Shop, yielding plug-in-ready rock and blues tones that even hardcore Gibson historians will dig.

"VOS-like" aged finish

A true first for an Epiphone, the 1959 Les Paul Standard sports an aged gloss finish that is similar in feel and appearance to the Vintage Original Spec finishes of today's American-made Gibsons. The '50s-correct non-beveled plastics and a back "Custom Shop" Epiphone badge add to this axe's A+ looks.

Epiphone 1959 Les Paul Standard Features:

  • Inspired by the iconic 1959 Gibson Les Paul
  • American-made Gibson USA Burstbucker pickups are brimming with late-'50s PAF goodness
  • Mallory 150 polyester film tone capacitors supply a warm, mellow response
  • CTS pots and Switchcraft toggle and jack are rated for years of dependable performance
  • Figured AAA maple top on a full-weight mahogany back
  • Rounded medium "C" mahogany neck nails the speed and handfeel of a true '59
  • Aged gloss finish is reminiscent of Gibson's VOS finishes
  • Tune-o-matic bridge, Epiphone Vintage Deluxe 18:1 tuners

The 60s vibe is goin on

My 3rd Les Paul and 1st Epiphone. This will be for slide and 440. I'm stupefied. I would not hesitate to perform with this instrument. These are a steal. Price is sure to go up. My instrument was ready to play out the box and as always the Sweetwater staff are all about the customer and business.

Epi 59 Les Paul Standard Sweetwater Exclusive colors

Sweetwater and Epiphone no doubt ended up getting their wires crossed on the original exclusive honey burst color. The picture ads on the website and internet changed weekly from the beginning of sales in November until announcing the Heritage Cherry Fade color recently in 2021. A couple of the early Epi 59's that are on the internet looked like a dirty lemon burst, and some looked like a light cherry burst, tomato soup burst, peach burst, tangerine burst, or a candy apple burst. They were all called Exclusive Aged Honey Burst Gloss, but they are not that close to IMO what guitarist and collectors see as Honey Burst. As of now there are five colors available on the new 1959 Epiphone Les Paul standards. Four colors are available to order at Sweetwater, two standard colors, and two Exclusive colors. Another color called "Southern Fade" is available through another music store. I ordered a "early mix breed" Honey Burst from Sweetwater in November that was actually made in late September according to the serial number. My 59 Epi Les Paul looks more like the newer Sweetwater Exclusive color Heritage Cherry Fade. Regardless of the colors, Epiphone and Gibson hit a homerun with this guitar and they have been pretty hard to get since the release date in November. I like many of the early owners thought we would probably get a Honey Burst that looked like a Honey Burst lol, but this old boy is happy and loves everything about the guitar including the colors and the mesmerizing maple top. Hope this review helps buyers and explains how the exclusive colors of the 59 LP came to be. Btw, my Epi 59 Les Paul was Professionally Plek'd and set up by Sweetwater before sending the guitar out the door. My guess is that Epi is making so many guitars that they get the colors, options, and orders a bit confused at times. As far as quality goes, the guitar I have is pretty much flawless and it has awesome playability and sound. If you want a new Les Paul at a 1970's price, get a new 59 Epi Les Paul if you can find one, or get one on order at Sweetwater! Lets all work together to defeat the Covid virus and get back to enjoying Live Music in America!

Sweet Guitar With Some Great Features!

Very sweet sounding guitar! The USA Burstbucker pickups, CTS pots, Mallory caps, and Swichcraft toggle and jack are worth the price! The neck p/u has a very deep, rich, mellow sound to it and the bridge is clear and very bright. The mid position is a wonderful balance. The pots are all smooth, quiet, and linearly effective. No snap crackle and pop! The neck is pretty beefy, but not uncomfortable. The case is solid feeling with nice hardware. Gotta love the Pepto Bismo pink lining!

I discovered a problem with the first guitar they sent me. There was a dent and scratching on the 15th fret. I called Andy Miller (Sales Engineer) who helped me exchange the guitar very quickly. Thanks, Andy!

One of My Dreams

I've wanted a Les Paul for a long time to add to my collection, but I never got around to buying one because of how expensive Gibson's are. I saw this on Sweetwater's website and it had basically all the electronics of a Gibson Les Paul in an Epiphone. Over the years, Epiphones have really increased the quality of their guitars and they are definitely closer to my price range. So, I finally decided to get this guitar. I am so happy with that decision. It sounds good through several amps that I've tried it on and it plays beautifully. This was a real treat for me! If there is anyone that wants a Les Paul, but the price of a Gibson is holding them back, I recommend giving this a spin. You won't regret it.

Do not wait, BUY it

First thing i have to say is nobody's going to beat Sweetwater's customer service! I'm sure if you dig into reviews you'll hear that ALOT! No other company has in the world can even come close! Second, these guys packed my guitar as if they were sending out a 3 million dollar guitar through FedEx! Thank you for that because it's not fun unpacking your guitar and it's got a cracked neck. Third, the 59' Sweetwater Exclusive is simply amazing. The tone it delivers makes me not want to put it down. It came all nice and shining with a complete setup on it, right out the box, no adjustments needed! Thank you Sweetwater!
