A Revival of Solid Guitar Sonics

A majesty of performance since its arrival in 1961, the Epiphone SG has served as a decades-long weapon of choice for countless guitarists. This collaborative Custom Shop effort respects the legendary model's visual appeal and hardware — while adding a bounty of under-the-hood enhancements for discerning modern players. A solid mahogany top and body represent the pinnacle of SG design, culminating in a classic white set mahogany neck, complete with onboard fretboard inlays for visual authenticity. The 1963 SG Custom further features a trio of Gibson's CustomBucker pickups, along with two volume and two tone knobs, and a 3-way Switchcraft toggle for imperative tone sculpting. As Sweetwater guitarists know all too well, sourcing a real-deal ’60s SG can be a difficult task — thankfully, the 1963 SG Custom is a dutiful replication of its entirety, harboring zero of the hassle.

Shaped to classic SG specifications

Mimicking the SG's iconic mid-century outline to a T, the 1963 SG Custom's 2-piece mahogany body and set mahogany neck form a rigid foundation and warm tonal balance reminiscent of the model's golden era. A traditional 1963 SG profile develops immediate access to the guitar's ebony fretboard, which contains 22 frets at a traditional 24.75 scale length and sightly mother-of-pearl inlays for spotting accurate notational transitions. The result? A one-to-one re-creation of a timeless electric classic — suitable for nearly any genre or playing style.

CustomBucker pickups with upgraded wiring

Every part of the 1963 SG Custom’s electronics is built for dead-on vintage accuracy. Of course, it’s next to impossible to find genuine vintage PAF pickups (even for Gibson); however, this Les Paul sports three potted Gibson CustomBucker pickups, the most faithful substitute you can find. The CustomBucker is the most historically accurate PAF copy ever, with an open tone and incredible dynamic response that simply must be heard. Epiphone also added premium wiring components, including a Switchcraft jack, CTS potentiometers, and Mallory capacitors, for vintage-style performance that’s sure to please.

Dressed by decade

Traditional details, such as Gibson's proprietary headstock design, a 1963 SG neck profile, and a bound pickguard, line the 1963 SG Custom with classic aesthetics and modern playability. Likewise, gleaming gold hardware, including Grover Rotomatics tuners, supplies superior intonation support — not to mention seamless movement and stability via the guitar's onboard Maestro Vibrola and lyre-style tailpiece. Topped off with a Vintage Original Sheen finish, the 1963 SG Custom is a carbon copy of its early-era ancestor, packed with the requirements to tackle any modern performance in style.

Epiphone 1963 SG Custom Electric Guitar Features:

  • A collaborative Custom Shop re-creation of an iconic ‘63 SG
  • Mahogany body and top produce bold electric tone with ample sustain and response
  • 1-piece mahogany set neck with traditional 1963 SG profile facilitates seamless movement across the fretboard
  • 24.75-inch scale ebony fingerboard with mother-of-pearl blocks and black side markers
  • Graph Tech nut and Grover Rotomatics tuning machines for optimal intonation support
  • Onboard CustomBucker pickups conjure authentic PAF tone with plenty of room for sonic experimentation
  • Dual volume and tone knobs with 3-way Switchcraft toggle cover a realm of vintage-inspired sounds
  • Maestro Vibrola with Epiphone lyre tailpiece for seamless movement and stability
  • Durable gold hardware sports deluxe visual appeal

HAVEN"T BOUGHT IT... but

First of all, Epiphone, can you change the name? This is a '63 Les Paul Custom, not a '63 SG custom, as SG came shortly before this after a dispute with Lester Paul's endorsement ending.
Second of all, Epiphone we love you even more for this. I have many friends who are either buying this guitar or have already bought it due to the fact that it's 1/4 the price of the original Gibson but looks and sounds as similar as it is possible to be to the original. They absolutely exploded when this release.
Can't wait to purchase this guitar and update my review with experience.

I have to say, Epiphone, I have high hopes and no doubts that this'll be a great addition to my collection. My current most-used guitar is an Epiphone Les Paul Custom 2023, which I enjoy greatly and makes me more excited to try this one!

SG's are cool.....ask Angus or Tony

OK, lets get this straight. I have close to 100 guitars.....Gibson, Fender, PRS, Jackson, Dean, Epiphone, you name it. Severe clinical GAS. But i always lusted after the Gibson SG custom....this very one. Probably thanks to Glen Buxton. Now, you all know that the Gibson version of this is around $. And with the cost of living these days, I mean a jar of mayo is $, that kind of cash just is impossible to save up if you want to own a house or car at the same time. Now, I do own several Gibson SG's......so the question is, how does this one stack up? Not bad...not bad at all. It's probably 90% there......i mean, the pickups, electronics are all top notch. The only problem is it needs a nitro finish. Many think it's overpriced, really considering the pickups alone, and the price of the Gibson equivalent, it's not bad. If you do not have any SG in your collection, do pop for the Gibson SG standard over this Epi (only a few hundred more). The Epi's just don't retain resale value, whereas the Gibson does. But if it's this particular SG you lust after, go for it, or save up the money the next 10 years for the Gibson! 4 stars....it's still not a Gibson.
