Tailor-made for Traveling Bassists

The Journey Instruments OB660 acoustic-electric bass utilizes a patented removable neck system that's tailor-made for airline carry-on compartments. Another way this bass is the perfect travel companion is its temperature-resistant carbon fiber construction. Yet, even with its diminutive body, the OB660 delivers a punchy, resonant depth with surprising volume and projection. And thanks to a proprietary under-saddle transducer pickup, the Journey Instruments OB660 may also become your go-to performance instrument.

Patented removable neck is designed for travel

The OB660 Overhead Bass from Journey Instruments was built for travel. Thanks to its patented removable neck system, Journey Instruments' Overhead travel bass can be assembled and disassembled in a matter of seconds. It collapses to a size that can be carried-on to most commercial airplanes, and it fits into most overhead bin compartments. The Overhead even comes with a travel backpack that includes a TSA-compliant laptop/tablet fold-out panel that can be scanned by airport security without removing the device.

A travel-sized body with full-sized tone

The OB660 bass exhibits wedge design with a lower shoulder/bout depth that's deep enough to bring out the naturally rich low end of the instrument. It's also this innovative shape that allows such a small instrument to produce such unbelievable volume and projection. This bass's offset soundhole maximizes the resonance of its soundboard, while proprietary bracing ensures a gratifying tone with incredible clarity. A bone nut, compensated bone saddle, and ebony bridge pins complete this guitar's tonal picture.

Ready for the stage

Not only will the Journey Instruments OB660 acoustic-electric bass become your favorite travel companion, but with its onboard under-bridge transducer pickup system, it also makes the perfect performing partner. And it couldn't be easier to use. Simply plug into a DI, amplifier, or preamp of your choice, and you'll be greeted with warm and natural acoustic-electric bass tones every time. Musicians at Sweetwater have traveled across the country with Journey instruments, and they couldn't be more satisfied with their experience.

Reviews

If you are considering a "mini" or "travel" bass, make sure this one is at the top of your list!
First of all, Toni Bush-Nord @ Sweetwater is just aces to deal with. Above all else, she listens. She wants to make sure she knows what you are looking for and what you are trying to accomplish with your new gear. I look forward to touching base with her each time I need to add something new to the rotation.

On to the bass...in short, this thing kills! I have run the gambit on these mini-basses over the last year owning both the Taylor GS-Mini and the Guild Jumbo Junior. My issue has always been the acoustic projection and the string tension associated with the 23.5" scale. Fast forward to pulling the trigger on the Journey OB660. This bass actually uses standard 30" short scale bass strings at a tension that most bass players are accustomed to. That also opens up options for nickels, flats, tape wounds, etc.

Unplugged, I am just shocked by the volume. Sound hole placement is key of course, and the Manzer Wedge design is a total win here. I have no issue keeping up with a Martin D-28 being strummed and finger-picked at a reasonable volume. This bass is extremely playable and comfortable. Hats off to Journey for also including a pickguard and (2) different height bridge saddles for you choice of action. The action on this neck can go low and stability is a non-issue. I have already had it through several weeks of severe temperature and humidity swings without noticing any shift.

I added some vinyl inlays because I am getting old and am guilty of checking my left hand position more often these days!!
Stay safe out there low-enders and grab one of these to pass the time!!

Incredible guitar - five stars
I got frustrated with all the cheap traveler guitars out there, and decided to try out the Journey! First, it easily packs into a backpack that has even more storage for an iPad, strap, snacks, anything you might need. It fits in the overhead or even under your seat on Southwest or other airlines. Finally, the tone and sound... OMG! It blew my mind. I have a thin hollow body GUILD Songbird, two 1972 fenders (strat and tele deluxe), and a nylon Godin. The journey is actually now my favorite, unless I want to play an electric for leads. The whole body resonates in your chest, the tone is bright and clear... you are going to love it. I actually plan to use it on my next album recording!
Top-notch / must try - Violent Femmes calling!
This bass makes me wish I lived in a locale where there were enough musicians to form a Violent Femmes tribute/cover band! I don't use, so far, the ingenious removable-neck system--just leave it on tight. It's the BASS itself I'm blow away by and in love with. The "Manzer Wedge" uh... really seems to work, and am just so happy with the full tone and depth--not just "for the size" but just overall. If you DO travel a lot (and/or have concerns re temp/humidity change issues), then this is a no-brainer; but on its own, this seems a must-have acoustic bass guitar.
This, the Bomb
I have one, love it beyond words! I wish they would do away with the finger cutaway (thus making more air volume), also the removable neck, and maybe a bigger body size (but most definitely staying w/ the 'Manzer Wedge" asymmetric body depth design--this is a masterpiece of acoustic bass guitar!!!
Well...where do I start
So was pretty excited about trying this out, received it and gave it a good run thru. Have to say I was very disappointed, especially at this price point. The one I received felt cheaply built, and when I put the neck on it and tightened the strings the E String popped first thing. The sound wasn't great....kinda thin....again, at this price point I expected so much more. So I returned it. Maybe it was just the instrument I received, and again, I travel ALOT and was really hoping this was going to be something that would make my life easier with airplanes and storage etc....very disappointed!
