Roland's Next-generation, Ultra-portable Jupiter

In 1978, when polysynths were the hot new thing, the Jupiter-4 put Roland on the map as a top synth maker. Since then, synthesizers bearing the Jupiter badge have proudly represented Roland's premier sound technologies and keyboard actions. Now Sweetwater is thrilled to present to you the Jupiter-Xm Synthesizer, which will redefine your concept of what a synthesizer can be. Incorporating classic Roland design and tour-tough build quality with the beastly new ZEN-Core synth engine, the Jupiter-Xm meticulously re-creates coveted instruments from Roland's vaunted legacy of genre-defining synths, while blazing new synthesis frontiers. Featuring multiple layers, tons of polyphony, and deep hands-on control, Jupiter-Xm gives you the power to effortlessly craft and deploy massive, evolving soundscapes with warmth, punch, and shimmer. Equipped with 37 solid, responsive mini keys and optional battery power, Jupiter-Xm is the self-contained, ultra-portable performance and electronic production synth you've been waiting for.

Classic analog to vintage digital — and beyond

Jupiter-Xm is equipped with Roland's latest cutting-edge sound engine, which not only can reproduce sought-after analog classics such as the Jupiter-8, Juno-106, and SH-101; but also vintage digital synths like the XV-5080 and today's RD pianos. Also onboard: an arsenal of Roland drum machines (including the TR-808, 909, 707, 727, 606, CR-78, and more) that are the cornerstones of electronic and dance music. The Jupiter-Xm is like a studio packed with vintage gear — but with modern capabilities and a deep, powerful synthesis engine that opens the portals to new sonic worlds.

I-Arpeggio: instant inspiration

Whether you're backing a singer or scoring to picture, you're familiar with working under pressure. You're often in the position of having to produce something amazing — quickly. Say hello to your new best friend: Jupiter-Xm. It's equipped with Roland's next-gen I-Arpeggio, which uses artificial intelligence not only to accompany you — but to spark your creativity. I-Arpeggio takes in your notes, rhythms, and phrases, and outputs perfect drum parts, bass lines, chords, and arpeggiated figures. This intelligent arpeggiator works simultaneously on each of Jupiter-Xm’s five parts, and you can customize the generated patterns and export them to your DAW via USB. Note that these are not backing tracks: they are intelligently generated beats and phrases that flesh out your live performance and obliterate writer’s block — a welcome feature if you're looking to define your own unique voice as an artist!

Zero in on the perfect settings

In addition to its informative LCD display, Jupiter-Xm is equipped with an impressive array of knobs, faders, and buttons that invite the immediacy of hands-on control. These robust controls feel smooth and precise for confident real-time sweeps, subtle or bold. Of course, Jupiter-Xm has a dedicated studio-grade FX section, and switching between synth layers is easy, so you can immediately take control of any aspect of your sound. The control offered by the Jupiter-Xm is so intuitive, you have the sensation of reaching in and massaging your sound to shape it exactly the way you hear it.

Unleash your creativity

With the ability to layer up to five parts — four for synths and one for drums — Jupiter-Xm is a beast. Its engine can power multiple authentic Roland classics such as the JX-8P and Jupiter-8 with ample polyphony to create thick layers and complex backing parts. Craft the ideal bass/lead split with an SH-101 and JUNO-106; layer a pristine RD piano with rich JX-8P strings; build a behemoth stack of Jupiter-8s; With the Jupiter-Xm, your creative vision is never compromised by technological limitations.

Wireless freedom, on-the-go

With JUPITER-Xm, you have the freedom to create, perform, and produce any time and anywhere. It operates for hours on eight AA batteries (an AC adapter is included); it's equipped with powerful speakers that can also play audio via Bluetooth; it even controls soft synths on your computer or iPad via Bluetooth MIDI. You can jam along to your favorite music, produce new tracks, layer internal synths with soft synths — and do it all without ever having to plug in a single cable!

Portability meets playability

All too often, portability means sacrificing playability or sonic flexibility. Roland designed JUPITER-Xm to strike the ideal balance with an all-new 37-note slim keybed that redefines just how expressive a compact keyboard can be. Whether it resides in your home or commercial studio or is part of your touring rig, Jupiter-Xm is built for the long haul with a robust metal chassis and premium components to stand up to the rigors of professional use. Equipped with high-grade balanced connections, a bevy of performance controllers, and multiple pedal inputs, Jupiter-Xm is the perfect partner for your musical exploits — wherever they may lead. It's also expandable so you can update it with new content as it becomes available. It can also directly share sounds and other content with its big sibling, the Jupiter-X.

Roland's Dream Synth
I was a little sceptical before I purchased the Jupiter Xm as I am sure a lot of people are because of the size and it is digital (I too am a big analog and vintage synth guy). Once I took it out of the box and powered it up, I was in love. The all-metal build quality is amazing. I've had it for a couple of months now and it is my go to synth. I own a Juno 106, a Roland SH-101, a Minilogue, a Subsequent 37, a DX7II, and a few others but I end up using the Jupiter for everything. It may be digital but you can adjust the age and temperature of the synth giving it the real aged sound. It's some kind of wizardry. I also like to run it through UAD's Studer Tape for the extra grit. When I match the sounds with the SH-101 and the Juno, they sound almost identical. (No two analog synths will sound identical anyways..) I know there isn't much press on this instrument (which is really weird) but it rocks. It is built like a tank, it has 4 speakers built in, it can take AA batteries, it has a bluetooth system where you can send and receive data, a vocoder, over 1,000 preset sounds to start from, and it is portable if you travel a lot like me. If you don't like little keys, plug into your midi controller. I use it with my Arturia 88-key controller and it makes all of the difference. Hope this helps.

Very powerful compact synth with lovely sounds
The Roland Jupiter-Xm is one of the most powerful compact "multitimbral" performance synths you can buy. The sounds are very good and there is a ton of diversity. You can layer and split sounds or use them as multitimbral sound sources midi channels 1-4 (synth). There is an Arpeggiator not to be confused with iArpeggiator and effects for specific tones (patches) and Scenes (complete multitimbral parts). The keyboard feels very good for compact keys (IMHO). You have a huge amount of parameters you can adjust when doing Sound Design or build Scenes. All of this is top notch along with the overall build quality.

However with all of this comes a great deal of complexity and menu diving. It's really important to take it slow and grow into this maschine over time. If you expect to dive in and master it quickly you most likely will get very frustrated. It will take time! It may take time to gain your rhythm when adapting it to your workflow. I advise you read the manuals, join the Jupiter X/Xm user groups on Facebook, and look up Robert Saint John's JupiterXpertGuide as all of this well help you to realize and enjoy your investment.

I work a lot ITB "In the Box" using Ableton Live 11/Push2 and NI KK/Maschine. Personally I enjoy jamming on my Jupiter-Xm without the computer, and recording Jupiter-Xm tracks into Live 11 using the Jupiter Analog Stereo outs. I prefer to play parts using the Jupiter-Xm's keyboard. I have found this is the easiest way to leverage my Xm without disrupting my workflow. There are of course many options for the type of workflows any artist may pursue. This is just my preferred since I work mainly ITB and have an established workflow for composing my music.

Dismiss the naysayers this thing is sweeeet
Recently picked up one of these and what can I say.

Awesome sounds - Check
Features - Check!

What this can do is nothing short of amazing. Every synth it emulates is a top tier sound. Smooth biting leads chorus pads for days and even some experimental sounds can be achieved in this.

There are those that will say "Buh but it's not the real thing" and my response is "and?"

I rather have something like this that puts out amazing sound regardless of its sound source and comes with great features like the I arpeggiator and the audio over usb than an old synth that might eventually die on you and require to hundreds to repair and will become increasingly more expensive to maintain.

Let's address the elephant in the room. The keys are tiny. So it does lack in playability. That said you do get use to it and the response of the keys is actually very nice, synth action yes but does not feel cheap.

The kb size is a trade off for portability and size. This was perfect as a team member in my studio because it doesn't take up much space and sounds amazing. Bottom line, don't get this to go on tour with for big intricate 2 hand work. But if you are a studio producer or bedroom musician this thing is fantastic.

To sum this up, listen to the demos online decide of it makes sense to you. If it makes sense in all but the kb size and you can't afford the J X model than go grab a Sysyem 8, it's a nice in between that you will also love. For everyone else there is this guy and it's worth a try.

Muh small keys!!!
I've watched the you tube vids, heard the complaints about small keys, menu diving, etc... But so what! I can still get zen core sounds and every Roland sound out there from my 80s past. I can tweak everything to my liking on the keyboard or in the daw and I can always use my hydrasynth as a controller for the XM if muh small keys are ever a problem. I don't really have any problems with this synth though. I use it for audio book sound design creation, ambient electronic music and drum n bass. If I want sci Fi sounds or any other sound I can come up with for audio production they are inside the XM in huge numbers. As for deciding on the XM or the jupiter x. I chose the XM because there was no way I was going to fit the hydrasynth and a Jupiter x on my production desktop. So the XM won. Oh mah grrd muh small keys!! I just don't see any problems with this synth.. I think people just like to find things to complain about lol!! Aside from that, the smaller version of this Jupiter was a smart move by Roland because there are people out there like me who have to work in a small studio space. Remember explore the studio space and play the hell out of that cowbell...

Simply put, modern electronic music wouldn't exist without Roland. Many of the electronic musicians here at Sweetwater cut our teeth on TR Rhythm machines and fondly remember programming our first TB-303s. We owe a good part of our careers to this amazing and innovative company. It's been fun to watch and grow right alongside Roland, as they've introduced wave after wave of revolutionary keyboards, digital pianos, and more. For example, Roland's V-Drum Kits continuously redefine the possibilities of electronic drums, beginning with SuperNATURAL technology to the latest Prismatic Sound Modeling. We're huge fans, and we'd love to tell you all about them. Whether you want a pocket-sized synth or a cutting-edge video mixer, if Roland makes it, then Sweetwater is 100% behind it.
