Uber-lightweight with Versatile Pickup System

The NS Design WAV4 Double Bass captures the essence of the acoustic upright bass, making it ideal for bassists entering the world of electric instruments. The first thing acoustic players will notice about the WAV4 is how compact and lightweight it is compared to an acoustic. The WAV4 doesn't skimp on sound, however. Its solid maple body brings fullness and clarity to every note you play. And whether you're bowing or plucking, the WAV4's Polar Pickup System produces top-notch plugged-in tone. You'll love the playability of the WAV4's graduated Coform fingerboard, and interchangeable support systems ensure a customized playing experience. The NS Design WAV4 Double Bass is a stellar combination of design, performance, and affordability.

Flexible design and meticulous construction

At Sweetwater, we know that gigging musicians are looking for maximum flexibility out of their gear. The WAV4 is compact, lightweight, and tailor-made for bassists that are on the move. This electric upright bass sports a solid maple body and neck, which deliver the richness and clarity you demand, and its flexible Polar Pickup System tailors to your playing style, whether you're aiming for a traditional acoustic response for bowing and percussive plucking, or an even, sustained plucked sound that's more suited to jazz. Interchangeable support systems (sold separately) optimize your playing comfort.

Custom-designed electronics deliver the sounds you need

The NS Design WAV4 sports a self-powered, custom Polar Pickup System. A pizz/arco switch optimizes the pickup's response for plucked or bowed playing, giving you the control, clarity, and richness you want from a bass, no matter your playing style. The WAV4 uses a passive circuit with high-impedance output that doesn't require a battery. NS Design's innovative JackPot potentiometers work differently than standard pots. Instead of continuously grounding a portion of the signal, the JackPot has a rotary switch that delivers 100% of the signal to your amp, DI, or mixer. You get all the output you need and a full range of tone that works with any system.

Coform fingerboard — a high-tech alternative to traditional tonewoods

Pairing maple with a high-tech acrylic formula, NS Design's Coform fingerboard material was designed in the interest in environmental conservation as well as innovation. Coform has an ebony-like appearance, yet it has less friction than wood for fast playability. The Coform fingerboard features uniform thickness throughout, and is harder and more durable than ebony or rosewood. And NS Design explains that its uniform acrylic surface "enhances harmonic content, strengthening the lows and extending the highs for a fuller, more dynamic, articulated and sustained response."

The latest Steinberger masterpiece

Ned Steinberger breathed new vision and life into stringed instruments when he introduced the L2 bass at Summer NAMM in 1979. Innovatively designed without headstocks, the L2s astonished the music world, and prototypes were quickly sold to such esteemed players as John Entwistle of The Who, Tony Levin of King Crimson, and Andy West of Dixie Dregs. Since then, Steinberger basses and guitars have continued to impress musicians — and engineers — the world over. Their cutting-edge Headless Tuning systems make way for stability never thought possible, while their Radius body shape, Fusion necks, and EMG humbucking pickup systems allow for an extensive range of tonal possibilities.

Reviews

This is a wonderful instrument
I was recommended the NS Wave over other comparably priced competitors. I bought one and am thrilled. Mine came really perfectly set up so it played great out of the box. I wanted a bit higher action on the g string and it was super easy to raise.

The stand is sturdy and really well designed.

The best is how it sounds. I play it through my Hartke amp with a 410 GK cabinet. It sounds so good. Plenty of that string bass bottom with clarity on the upper registers.

I switch between electric and this during gigs so I use an A B switch and I put an MXR 10 band eq before the A/B switch so my amp settings don't have to be touched during the gig (room dependent) and it is perfect. I kinda want to buy another one in a different color so I can pick and choose LOL.
Music background: 50 year jazz and rock bass player. MCA recording artist.
Great upright
First off this is a great bass but I want to point out some things to know. One, NS doesn't really want you to try out any strings than what they make for the bass. I wish the tuners were more like real upright tuners with a hole in the middle. Normal orchestral bass strings are too wide to fit in their electric bass style tuners. The strings that come with it are good but the E is a little stiff so you may want to try the contemporary light tension NS makes for this bass. Second, the fretboard has dots but the notes aren't really in tune directly over the dot. It's more like a millimeter or two behind the dot. Third, the bridge is adjustable up and down of course but also you can move the bridge side to side by hand as well.
Exceeded my expectations
I was contemplating buying yet another acoustic upright. But the features I wanted only start at about $3500 so I held off in hopes that an NS would be a satisfactory replacement. Upon receiving this instrument realize that this suits me well. It has a nice neck size and radius, normal string spacing and a very nice dotted fingerboard (made of "coform", a composite material, not rosewood). It's not unattractive either.

The controls are a volume pot, a tone/treble pot and a switch for either arco or pizzicato. The pickups are passive and sound very good with decent output. It bows well. The range of tones you can get from this thing are amazing (sounds awesome played pizzicato with a sub-harmonic-octave pedal or bowed with an envelope filter). You can play it loudly enough to shake the sheet-rock without feedback.

While an actual acoustic bass certainly has advantages in tone over the NS when both are unamplified, gigs will likely need amplification and in that case, the acoustic advantage largely evaporates. Besides, with a decent linear amp/cab even at low volumes this instrument possesses all of the key character of an acoustic bass (to a great extent due to the 41.73" string scale -- the stock strings are very nice D'Addario's).

One huge advantage is that this instrument is so much less fragile than an acoustic upright and is much easier to transport being easily carried with one hand with bow and provided tripod in the provided gig-bag while carrying the amp in the other hand.

I like it.

Awesome Bass
I just unpacked this bass a couple of hours ago and I've been playing it for most of that time. This thing is much, much more than what I've read and heard about it. I had a vintage Gold Tone electric upright bass a few years ago and there's no comparison in weight, sound and ease of playing. The fit and finish is awesome and it was in tune when I took it out of the box. I have a Fender USA precision bass, a Guild B140 acoustic bass and an Ibanez SRH500F fretless bass and this WAV 4 rounds out my collection to play anything from Bluegrass to Contemporary. I'm ready now. Plus, it sure beats hauling around a full size acoustic double bass.
Music background: Worship team bass player, sound tech. Playing bass guitar, guitar, for over 50 years in form.
Meh...
I had high hopes for a piece of NS gear with the WAV4 EUB Bass. Boy was I let down... Don't waste your money. Taking the bass out of the packaging it felt lightweight and looks convenient enough to travel with. Plugged it in and right away I noticed the volume knob was sticky and the tone left me with an undesired feeling. I could not tell a difference in the arco and plucking switch in which I tried both techniques in both settings. Some of the finishes look like an afterthought especially in the upper registers of the fingerboard. It performed okay but felt cheap... I could never really get comfortable with it even with it's low string action. I might have kept it if it was priced more reasonably for the quality I received...
