Brass Instruments

If there’s one section in a band or an orchestra that can amp up the intensity of a performance, then it’s the brass. Fiery trumpets, blatting trombones, bombastic tubas: these voices and more can help put the fire in your Earth, Wind & Fire and the spring in your Rite of Spring. If you’re shopping for quality brass instruments or accessories for your existing horn, then you’ll find them here at Sweetwater.

What Are Brass Instruments?

Brass instruments are both aerophones and labrosones. Their distinct sound comes from players blowing into a harmonically tuned resonator and shaping the sound with their lips (known as embouchure). A brass instrument’s pitch is modified by controlling its tubing length with slides (trombone), valves (French horn and tuba), crooks (natural trumpet), or other mechanical means.

Though most professional brass instruments are made of brass (often plated with silver or gold), today’s brass instruments can also be made from plastic (ABS) to give students an affordable, durable first step into music.

What Instruments Are in the Brass Family?

The most common instruments in the modern brass family are the trumpet, French horn (or simply “horn”), trombone, and tuba. Other brass instruments include the bugle, cornet, euphonium, flugelhorn, mellophone, and alto/tenor/baritone horn.

Brass Instrument Accessories? Sweetwater’s Got ’Em!

Great tone starts with a well-maintained instrument. You can help keep your horn looking and sounding its best by stocking up on valve oil, slide lubricant, and cleaning cloths.

If you’re looking to shape the tone of your brass instrument, then an upgraded mouthpiece is a great place to start. Sweetwater carries aftermarket trumpet, trombone, and tuba mouthpieces in various depths, cup sizes, and compositions to help you find the sound and heat you’re searching for.

Traveling light? Many of today’s molded horn cases are formfitting and have cutouts for sheet music, oils, mutes, and more.
