So you finally bought a sweet new mixer for your studio. Or maybe you're bringing a venerable old beast back to life. Either way, your dreams will now be consumed by all of the accessories you need to protect, connect, mount, store and view your mixer.
The studio mixer accessory you should plan to add as soon as possible to your kit is a meter bridge. If possible, add meters for every input channel, but at the very least you'll want an accurate stereo meter on your master channels. The worst thing in the world is realizing the perfect take you just recorded is too hot or even clipping.
Making your studio mixer physically easier to use simply makes any session go that much smoother. Could yours use some light? Sometimes a performance lends itself to lower mood lights, and a few well aimed mixer lamps can save you from hitting the pre-fader button instead of the mute button. If your project studio or remote mixer is small, throw some rack ears on that puppy and get it up where you can see it while you're playing.
And don't forget the recording engineer's best friend… tape! Not magnetic tape, we're talking 1" white marking tape made for mixers. The unsung hero in every session is the humble white tape that marks everything from mixer channels to microphone cables. You can't just use masking tape - unless you want to find your channel markers smudged and illegible or wadded up on the floor. Good engineers don't cut corners on marking tape.
Last but definitely not least, we consider a solid road case a must-have mixer accessory. If you do any remote recording at all, you'll want to protect your console. We've literally seen an expensive recording mixer leave the live session wrapped in a moving blanket. Don't do that. Get a decent road case. You'll be glad you have it when it's time to haul your desk to the shop for maintenance or repair.
