Reviews

Great option for low volume practice on a budget.

I knowntheybhave training 'kits', but those are an investment that could score you a full kit. I dot these aftwr seeing a Sweetwater demo and following up with rdavid and 66Samus on YT. They work fantastic. I had got a budget set of LV cymbals for my kids kit. The ones he had got with his kit were already dead. The ride was cracked and welded back together and just sounded l ike an anvil. I figured if I had to get new cymbals on a budget, might as well go that route.

Then it came time for the heads. I had heard of using mesh heads for low volume several years ago, but never seen them until the Sweetwater demo on YT.

The look cool. But that is not really a reason to get them. The sound good and respond pretty good. I cant really say how they compare to the Evans DB One heads and the RTOM heads are just batter heads, but they seem solid. They tuned up easy and held tension well. They dont mark up the way traditional batter heads do.

The volume felt like it reduced by 60% or more. The snare was louder compared to the Tom's. I think thats the result of rhe resohead and snare wire. It took some tweaking, but I ultimately got it in line with the Tom's by using some moongel and duck tape. Fortunately I have black duck tape so it doesnt stand out so bad. It left it sounded tight and controlled.

I will say, the heads do not facilitate stick bounce as much as a standardnhead does. I put the rubber tips on to the sticks and they seemed to respond like a full wood stick responded to a standard b head.

Listen, this is a great product at a great price. Under $, they hold up, work with triggers and sound good. Lightyears better than those mouse pad like mutes we had on before.

I would be interested in upgrading to the Blackhole heads at sometime in the future so it can be an easy transistor from practice to performance.

Just for those wondering, these went on to an old Ludwig Pinnacle kit and sounded better I think with them on than the heads that were on before. Certainly much better for an at home situation where a kid is learning.

Also of note, I recorded a clip of him playing them and you can hear distinct difference in each drum, even on a cell shot video clip from about 20 feet away. There is some resonance and tone, just drastically reduced.

Great investment.

Sweetwater rocked as always.

Rtom drum heads
Very pleased with how they sound on my Gretsch toms...quieter than regular tom heads which I was going for.
RTOM Low Volume Mesh Drumhead 5-pack
The reduction in volume is very noticeable, I can hit with confidence and not bother, the truth is that they are excellent for rehearsing at home, the sensation is similar to hitting a normal head. I recommend them
Great for drum triggers
I put these on my kit and used the UFO drums center mount triggers (off center a bit) into an Alesis DM10 controller (not the sounds - just the midi outputs) and ran it into Superior Drummer 3 using Cubase 12. As long as you make the heads reasonably tight, any double-triggering completely disappears. I have very low threshold, sensitivity, and re-trigger settings and can achieve midi velocities between 5 and 127 with no problems at all. They make for a VERY dynamic performance. All of the snare ghost notes are triggered and they are very quiet for use on the church stage. There are no amps or live monitors on stage at all because we use in ears and people in the front row cannot hear anything audible from the drums. We play at about 85 db at the front row, so I'd say these are a winner.
