I knowntheybhave training 'kits', but those are an investment that could score you a full kit. I dot these aftwr seeing a Sweetwater demo and following up with rdavid and 66Samus on YT. They work fantastic. I had got a budget set of LV cymbals for my kids kit. The ones he had got with his kit were already dead. The ride was cracked and welded back together and just sounded l ike an anvil. I figured if I had to get new cymbals on a budget, might as well go that route.
Then it came time for the heads. I had heard of using mesh heads for low volume several years ago, but never seen them until the Sweetwater demo on YT.
The look cool. But that is not really a reason to get them. The sound good and respond pretty good. I cant really say how they compare to the Evans DB One heads and the RTOM heads are just batter heads, but they seem solid. They tuned up easy and held tension well. They dont mark up the way traditional batter heads do.
The volume felt like it reduced by 60% or more. The snare was louder compared to the Tom's. I think thats the result of rhe resohead and snare wire. It took some tweaking, but I ultimately got it in line with the Tom's by using some moongel and duck tape. Fortunately I have black duck tape so it doesnt stand out so bad. It left it sounded tight and controlled.
I will say, the heads do not facilitate stick bounce as much as a standardnhead does. I put the rubber tips on to the sticks and they seemed to respond like a full wood stick responded to a standard b head.
Listen, this is a great product at a great price. Under $, they hold up, work with triggers and sound good. Lightyears better than those mouse pad like mutes we had on before.
I would be interested in upgrading to the Blackhole heads at sometime in the future so it can be an easy transistor from practice to performance.
Just for those wondering, these went on to an old Ludwig Pinnacle kit and sounded better I think with them on than the heads that were on before. Certainly much better for an at home situation where a kid is learning.
Also of note, I recorded a clip of him playing them and you can hear distinct difference in each drum, even on a cell shot video clip from about 20 feet away. There is some resonance and tone, just drastically reduced.
Great investment.
Sweetwater rocked as always.
