Transform your Mac mini into a Workstation

The Sonnet Technologies xMac mini Server Thunderbolt 3 edition was designed to adapt the Mac mini for the needs of professional audio engineers. Since the Mac mini's compact body has no PCIe slots and cannot be securely rackmounted, its potential to be used in professional audio applications is seriously limited. This custom 1U enclosure securely mounts your Mac mini and can connect two PCIe cards to the computer through one of its Thunderbolt 3 ports. On the front panel, a USB-A port and power button allow you to control the whole server with your keyboard or other USB device. The Sales Engineers at Sweetwater wish to remind you that only a Mac mini with Thunderbolt 3 ports can work with this server.

Note: Mac mini and PCIe cards sold separately.

Dual PCIe 2.0 slots

The xMac mini Server Thunderbolt 3 Edition has integrated 150W power for high-performance PCIe cards. The server will support one full-height, full-length, single-width card and one full-height, half-length card. If you have a card that includes a daughter card, the supplied mounting bracket lets you securely mount the daughter card inside the server chassis next to the main card. This mounting solution leaves the second PCIe slot open for another card.

Included cables get you up and running

When you receive your xMac mini Server Thunderbolt 3 Edition, you'll get additional panel-mount cables. You won't have to order extra cables or go to your local store to get set up. Simply plug the HDMI, 10 gigabit ethernet, and USB-A cables into the back of your server, and you're ready to connect to all your devices. Inside the unit, you'll also get access to excellent cable management features to keep your setup clean and organized.

Sonnet Technologies xMac mini Thunderbolt 3 Server Features:

  • Adds connectivity and extra capabilities to your Mac mini via two high-performance PCIe cards
  • Supports pro audio playout, 10 gigabit ethernet, fiber channel, SAS/SATA RAID controllers

Reviews

It works!
Works with M2 Mac Mini and Avid HD Native card. It's a bit bulky for portable use but can be mounted in a portable rack case. Just be sure the depth is adequate and rear support (or rails) is provided. Also, Bluetooth reception is reduced by the steel enclosure. Might be possible to improve by cutting a hole in the enclosure directly beneath the Bluetooth antenna in the Mac Mini and mounting the server on the bottom of the stack (I have Avid HD OMNI above the xMac mini Server).

No Bluetooth, No WiFi

In theory, this is a great solution for most people, but the lack of wireless connections has turned out to be a real pain. Like the other reviewer mentioned, the Bluetooth antenna is very reduced. However, WiFi does not work at all; it causes interference with the PCI card and causes Pro Tools to shut down. This "feature" is mentioned in the manual. Had I known this prior to purchase, I would have found another solution. While I'm already wired for Ethernet, this does cause some major hassles when needing to network with mobile devices during a session. After a year of irritating and largely ineffective workarounds, it's become a dealbreaker and so I've decided to use a PCI breakout box. Oh yeah, the fan is noisy enough that you won't want this mounted anywhere near your monitoring. Unless you're handy enough to upgrade to a Noctua fan set (which voids the warranty), it's best used in a machine room or an IsoBox.
