JUNO-X: A Legacy Reborn

Few synthesizers have blazed trails like Roland’s JUNO duo of the 1980s. Powered by the same conceptual architecture, the 60 and the 106 synth engines delivered instantly recognizable polyphonic sound. The JUNO’s sempiternal sonics have long awaited a worthy heir, and the JUNO-X has arrived to pick up the mantle. This wouldn’t be a proper continuation of the JUNO lineage if it didn’t have its own evolution of its predecessors’ engines. Sweetwater’s premier synthesists are elated to report that the ZEN-Core more than delivers, donning an enhanced version of Roland’s trademark Super Saw waveform that is paired with an equally worthy Chorus III mode. The JUNO-X sits in the pantheon of iconic time-bending synths, effortlessly oscillating between past and future and gracing us with its presence in the present — and we’ve barely scratched the surface.

A brief history of time travel

The JUNO-X’s sonic profile is a “greatest hits” of Roland’s most robust offerings. Tap into the JUNO-60’s rich, DCO-driven sounds and rock-solid arpeggiator. Or channel the JUNO-106’s classically cool polyphonic portmanteau. Explore everything from acoustic instruments and vintage synths to a variety of percussive and world sounds, thanks to the 900 onboard PCM-based presets of the XV-5080. Conversely, you can hone the atmospheric RD series of stage pianos to accommodate any number of moods. For the extra-motivated aural adventurer, the JUNO-X’s built-in mic input imbues you with the full power of the Vocoder Model, allowing you to fuse any X synth to create evocative, character-filled soundscapes spanning art shows to robot rock. Roland’s Model Expansions let you drive the ZEN-Core engine into even more terrain, accessing sounds of the Jupiter-8, JD-800, SH-101, and other classics, alongside sound-design tools like the Vocal Designer, sample packs, and more.

ZEN-Core and the art of synthesizer maintenance

It may be the most accurate way to describe the JUNO-X as being the contemporary answer to the question: What makes a JUNO a JUNO? Roland’s anthropological deep dive yields the modern iteration of classic JUNO interfacing — intuitive, straightforward, and powerful as ever. Responsive sliders, satisfying tactility, and a sensible layout mean easy access to the features and functions you need, whenever you need them. The LCD adds the possibility for greater depth and exploration without being intrusive, too, which is great for sound design, preset recall, and more. Three assignable switches and two assignable sliders accompany Roland’s famous pitch bend/mod lever, offering even more ways to flex this synth’s muscles. The JUNO-X also introduces creative spaces called Scenes, providing a 256-slot bank for global setups, including parameters for four instrument spots, a dedicated drum part, I-Arpeggio settings, effects, and more.

Sonic cartography and you

The JUNO-X discards the single-DCO shackles of its forefathers, taking full advantage of its technological heft by allowing you to layer multiple sounds from any source (internal to the JUNO repertoire or from Model Expansions) up to four deep at once. Unleash never-before-heard blistering synth leads that can raze any track. Build brand-new bass lines from the ground up, delivering massive tones with any number of characteristic quirks. Design pads and soundspaces that can transport the audience to another dimension. Looking for more depth? The JUNO-X’s editing software lets you fine-tune the most microscopic details of any sound, scene, effect, and more. Configurations are practically limitless, and the JUNO-X’s dynamic polyphony across all four sounds will arm you with the tools necessary for any creative odyssey.

Tonal texture at your fingertips

The JUNO-X’s onboard suite of effects and sound-modeling tools grants you the control you need, and the newly introduced Chorus III is only the beginning. Toggle the trademark Super Saw in the oscillator module, dialing in waveform blends, sub frequencies, and more. A master effects parameter accompanies five types of delay, eight types of reverb, five types of chorus, overdrive, and compression modification. Control LFO, HPF, filter, and envelope parameters on the fly, and store what you need into preset and Scene banks. For added rhythmic realization, choose between the retro arpeggiator of classic Roland canon or the future-facing, DAW-compatible I-Arpeggiator, injecting flavors of musical motion to your sound, thanks to its use of crafty algorithms.

Roland JUNO-X 61-key Synthesizer Features:

  • Over 4,000 presets from historic Roland products, including the JUNO-106, JUNO-60, XV-5080, RD series of pianos, and classic Vocoder Model

Reviews

Not just a remake - a modern synth with classic feel
I've had the Juno X now for over a year. I have gigged with it extensively. I do a show using only one synth and a looper, and the Juno X is the synth for my gig. Being able to stack four sounds plus drums gives me everything I need. The hands on controls let me be extremely creative and tweak sound in real time, and they are so well-laid out and familiar that it's just a joy to tweak. Some comparisons online have been done between the old Juno 106 and the X, and apart from a few very nebulous and questionable comments that it just doesn't sound as "analog" as the old one, the overwhelming consensus is that the X faithfully recreates the 106 and gives a ton of other sonic options as well. Honestly, the people complaining about that will never be happy with anything but the OG 106, so they can save their money. The rest of us will enjoy not only faithful recreations of 106 sounds, but a host of other analog recreations and digital Zencore sounds too.

For gigging, I don't think there is a better all-around synth that covers so much ground in one unit if you are doing anything requiring old-school sounds but also the digital sounds of today. It is a synthwave powerhouse, a techno powerhouse, and if you're doing dance music you can build an entire track using nothing but this synth's on-board sounds.

One more thing, which online has been a very contentious and confusing aspect of Roland and Roland Cloud integration. Some people mistakenly believe that in order to use and play this synth that you have to connect to Roland online somehow, and that Roland has to continue to connect every so often in order for the synth to work. None of that is true. You can buy this synth, never connect it to the Internet at all, ever, and still have a great synth with over a thousand on-board sounds and will never even have to register the unit at all. Ever! But if you WANT to, you can connect it with Roland cloud and have a world of new sounds available to you as long as your subscription to Roland Cloud is active. It is only the Cloud based sounds that need a verification by Roland every 30 power cycles. If you never use the Roland cloud sounds, you will NEVER have to connect your X to the Internet, you will never have to verify your subscription, and you don't need a Roland cloud subscription in order to use the X as-is, out of the box. THERE IS A TON of misinformation about this online, trying to scare people into thinking that someday their synth just won't work any more, or that Roland is somehow taking their rights of ownership away, or other nonsense. The verify process only happens if you use Roland Cloud based sounds. That's it. Don't be mislead - the Juno X is a perfect stand-alone synth that will NEVER be bricked or limited by Roland or anyone else. It is Roland Cloud that requires verification on a regular basis - not the hardware, unless you put cloud sounds onto your hardware.

Overall this is, I believe, one of the best overall synths you can get right now, and will remain a great synth and a great value for years to come.

Just amazing.
I'm just a beginner to the digital/analog synth world, but I can't explain how impressed I am with the Juno X. I love it so far and I'm still learning more about it everyday.

Everything I hoped for and more! Impressive!
I love the JunoX, have had it in my studio space for more than 6 months and still love it. The classic sound profile is true to form and surpassed my expectations. Enjoying the aftertouch. My only nitpick is the aftertouch is a bit stiff at first, took a little bit to "break in" and dial in but feels softer and responsive without being overly sensitive. The pre-installed patches are great, has a ton of functionality and a classic user interface that isn't a pain to dive into. The free editing software from Roland makes sound design simple, the small screen can be a little restrictive at times when designing more complex patches etc. the software solves this simply and intuitively. The screen size shouldnt be a game breaker for anyone regardless, its still easy enough to use and see clearly. The Roland Zen engine and platform allows for a ton of versatility and options for access to a wealth of classic synth sounds from Roland that are in most cases indistinguishable to the original synths. If you love the Juno sound look no further. It takes up some real-estate but is surprisingly light weight and would be easy to travel with for gigs with a decent case.
Wow!
I just received this Juno X and all I can say is Wow! I own a Deepmind 12 and yes it can get the Juno sound very closely, however this is the Juno sound I have been chasing. If you told someone that this was an analog machine and they heard it with out knowing I am certain they would not be able to distinguish the difference. My first impressions, solid built mostly metal chassis the keys feel much more premium than the Akai MPC keys and of course DM 12. The first presets, which is the Juno x engine is super fat! It sounds beefier than the DM12 the faders feel more premium as well in comparison . I seem to have picked up on its workflows very quickly so far I really really like it. No latency to the faders. This is beyond a VST in a box, rather the deepmind 12 on steroids, it is so much fun to play and sounds amazing! I think Roland nailed it! Yes it's pricey but it feels really premium. If you are on the fence and been chasing the 80s Juno's with out having to buy an original one get this. You will not regret it. Plus Sweetwater offers 48 month 0% financing for qualified customers, $48 bucks a month minimum payment it's no brainer.
Juno-X
Construction: The case, knobs, and sliders are of excellent quality. The unit is heavy and sturdy overall. The screen is well positioned and easy to see. The keybed is dissaponting, particularly the aftertouch. You have to be a professional weight lifter to push the keys and activate. Really hard and difficult to control any nuance.

Connectivity and software: Everything works perfectly and it sounds great, especially with the XLR connections. The editor software is fairly intuitive, and a good way to learn the signal flow. Once I got past the learning curve I have not used it. The whole point of a hardware synth is the hands-on aspect IMHO. The menu diving is not overwhelming and easy to navigate.

How does it sound? Amazing! When the Juno line first came out, it was an attempt to make synths more afordable. Basically, they ripped as much out as they could and still call it a synth. THIS is what made it what it is. Simplicity. Super easy to create patches and the "sweet spots" are everywhere. The effects are high quality, and that famous JUNO CHORUS! I do wish for the JUNO-X model that they added an additional envelope and LFO (would have been nice). Maybe in a future firmware update...

Bottom line: This is a Roland Juno. If you want a Juno, this is it. If you are looking for a deep synth with tons of capability, Hydrasynth Deluxe (which I also own). This ticks all the boxes of a Roland Juno though.

Simply put, modern electronic music wouldn't exist without Roland. Many of the electronic musicians here at Sweetwater cut our teeth on TR Rhythm machines and fondly remember programming our first TB-303s. We owe a good part of our careers to this amazing and innovative company. It's been fun to watch and grow right alongside Roland, as they've introduced wave after wave of revolutionary keyboards, digital pianos, and more. For example, Roland's V-Drum Kits continuously redefine the possibilities of electronic drums, beginning with SuperNATURAL technology to the latest Prismatic Sound Modeling. We're huge fans, and we'd love to tell you all about them. Whether you want a pocket-sized synth or a cutting-edge video mixer, if Roland makes it, then Sweetwater is 100% behind it.
