A Direct Box with Extra Sound-shaping Possibilities

The Z-Tone Active Direct Box from IK Multimedia is full of useful features that refine the sound of your axe. Like most DIs, the Z-Tone has enough headroom to keep the natural feel of your instrument and is equipped with a handy gain control knob. It sets itself apart from other direct boxes with its sound-shaping options. This direct box has two preamp channels to choose from, Pure and JFET, for a transparent or warm preamp character. Meanwhile, variable impedance control and a 20dB pad further refine your sound. Powered by a 9-volt battery or phantom power, the Z-Tone can be used anywhere from outdoor stages to the studio. Regardless of what genre you play, the Z-Tone active Direct Box from IK Multimedia has the tone-shaping capabilities to help you find and refine the perfect tone.

Extra switching options let you choose the perfect tone

Like most direct boxes, the Z-Tone comes with an adjustable input gain control that makes it easy to dial in the level of your axe. When you're adjusting the level, choose your preferred preamp circuit. The Z-Tone borrows its preamp circuits from the award-winning AXE I/O and features Pure and JFET channels. The Pure channel is a transparent preamp that won't color your sound. JFET takes advantage of a Class A JFET amplifier for warmth and midrange focus.

Patent-pending variable impedance control

The Z-Tone Direct Box has a patent-pending variable impedance control knob. Designed by IK Multimedia, this knob lets you dial in your impedance from 1 MOhm to 2.2k Ohms for unique shaping capabilities. Turn the knob counterclockwise and the sound will become tighter and more precise as the impedance increases. As you turn the knob clockwise, the sound becomes thick, saturated, and bold.

Useful output options

The Z-Tone has two useful output options. There's a balanced XLR output with a ground lift switch to cut out noise from ground loops. There's also a 1/4" unbalanced output for extra flexibility. You can use the 1/4" Link output on the front panel to connect to pedals and amps. Here at Sweetwater, our audio gurus have found that this allows you to record DI tracks at the same time you record your physical amp tone in the studio. For live sound applications, this lets you blend direct and amp sounds.

IK Multimedia Z-Tone Active Direct Box Features:

  • Compact direct box with flexible sound-shaping options
  • Variable impedance control unlocks more sonic textures
  • Pure preamp channel provides transparent, uncolored tone
  • JFET preamp channel delivers warmth and a slight midrange boost
  • Balanced and unbalanced outputs give you flexibility to record your way
  • Link output lets you record DI tracks alongside your real amp's tone
  • 20dB pad lets you use other instruments like keyboards and synths
  • Ground lift switch eliminates annoying hum and ground loops

The Swiss Army Knife of DI Boxes

This little box is definitely not what it first appears to be.
Yes, it's a very clean DI box but, it is so much more than that.
If you record your guitars or basses into an audio interface, then you need this little box...period.
You can power this with phantom power from your mixer board or audio interface as well as from the 9 volt battery compartment on the back of the unit. It's literally built like a tank with an all steel chassis and high quality jacks, buttons, and connectors all the way around. But there are a few features that are not documented in the either the manual, or online info that really makes this stand out when compared to other units like the Radial DI boxes. First, you can control the gain of the input which is huge for matching levels into a audio recording interface or mixer. Second, it uses a very high quality transformer to isolate signals and the ground lift is the best I've found on ANY DI to date. If you have noisy signals, this will save your butt. Third, by using the Z-Tone section, you can record straight into your audio interface and change the character of the DI signal by selecting either the JFET or PURE amp choices. This isn't like a stomp box that makes a big change, these are subtle changes but make a big difference when you put that recorded signal into a guitar soft synth like Guitar Rig or Amplitube.
And you can use the 'Link' output to go to your amp while your recording so you hear and feel your normal guitar tone while you actually play instead of having to deal with the funky latency of recording into the computer in real time.
But by far the biggest surprise is the fact that you can use this DI to re-amp your recorded guitar tone back out into the real world AND have a gain control going back into your amplifier when you do! This is huge because the tone will change if the level back out of your audio interface is too high or too low.
For the price, there really isn't anything close in the Radial line that can do the same and the onboard Z-Tone tonal choices are a bonus.

A versatile studio tool

It's expensive, but worth every penny. If your looking at this DI box, then you're probably also looking a the Warm Audio unit and boxes from Radial as well and, for the same money as those, you get 2 DI Boxes in 1 unit plus tone shaping control and premium components designed and built in Italy. Click on the video link below to get a real world look at what this little 'Audio Swiss Army Knife' can do.

Underrated and misunderstood home studio tool

The 1-star reviewer said "The tonal options were very limited." In a way that's true but I think it's more of a problem of mismatched expectations. This device is actually a really good value if you use amp modelers and/or want clean signal for re-amping.

The Z-Tone knob is nothing more than an input impedance control. This modifies the physical interaction between the guitar and the input so it's a passive effect and feels a bit different than an EQ pedal. When you connect your guitar to a pedal or an audio interface it often makes your guitar sound brighter than it would plugged in directly to an amp. You can use the Z-Tone control to dial back this brightness. Radial includes the same control in many of their products and offers a standalone version for $60, the Dragster.

Unlike the Dragster, this box includes a buffer, a DI, and a splitter. If you bought all those devices separately it would cost way more than what this box costs. Plus, other guitar buffer pedals and clean boosts usually add subtle coloration; this can be good, but it's not something I want to be forced to use for every DI recording. This box allows you to use "Pure" mode for a truly uncolored signal or "JFET" mode to emulate other guitar buffers. They publish the THD and frequency response specs on their website if you're into that sort of thing.

Lived Up To The Rep

Really happy with the IK Z-Tone Active Direct Box, perfect for my project studio. Yes, you can run a line out to an amp as well, but if you don't want to bother just engage the J-Fet option and you have a nice, smooth guitar tone with warmth and character. Works a treat for bass as well, takes EQ and tone shaping plugins very well. Plays nice with my DAW. And of course Jon and the good folks at Sweetwater are the best.

Very underwhelmed

I fell for the marketing for this product and it left me very disappointed. The tonal options were very limited. I tried it in front of a tube amp and two different USB interfaces with the same result. I ended up returning it because it just didn't add anything to my tone.
