All-analog, Tube-fueled Tone for Your Pedalboard

A game-changing joint effort between EarthQuaker Devices and Dr. Z Amplification, the ZEQD-Pre injects your guitar rig with a healthy dose of tube-flavored character. Place this all-analog preamp pedal at the end of your signal chain, and you’ll revel in the harmonic-rich warmth and dynamic response you’d expect from a cylinder of glowing-hot glass. The ZEQD-Pre’s robust, passive 3-band EQ is just what the doctor ordered for fine-tuned tone shaping, pushing its preamp into ear-grabbing grit, or breathing new life into your favorite modeling patch. Moreover, this stellar stompbox features a switchable analog cabinet simulation for seamless DI recording and backline-free live performances. You also get a Boost footswitch with a dedicated Level control, delivering a wide-open volume bump that lets your solos soar high above the mix without sacrificing clarity or character. Finally, the ZEQD-Pre includes numerous thoughtful features, including a Ground Lift, Headphone output, and a balanced XLR DI output. Driven by an EF86 pentode — the same tube that fuels Dr. Z’s pristine, hi-fi amplifiers — the EarthQuaker Devices ZEQD-Pre offers a complete, all-analog amplifier system that fits right on your pedalboard.

Put legendary tube tone at the finish line

Driven by a real-world EF86 pentode, the ZEQD-Pre infuses every note you play with classic tube warmth and an inspiring level of dynamic response. Place this powerhouse at the end of your signal chain, and you’ll be able to shape your sound with a responsive 3-band EQ — dial in rich harmonic overdrive, refine your amp’s voice, or add organic realism to any modeling setup. Need to cut through the mix? It’s no problem for the ZEQD-Pre; simply stomp on the Boost footswitch, and the EQ drops out completely, unleashing a pure, full-range lift with its own dedicated Level control. Thanks to the Boost feature, you’ll have two distinct voices at your command: sculpted tone or wide-open boost. When we ran the ZEQD-Pre through its paces here at Sweetwater, we found it to be immediate, musical, and unmistakably analog.

Have your tone and play it too

The EarthQuaker Devices ZEQD-Pre delivers the authentic feel of a real amp — even during quiet practice — thanks to the built-in analog cabinet simulation. Need extra flexibility? Flip the Cab Bypass switch and send a pure signal to your favorite IR loader or modeling software. This preamp pedal is a streamlined solution for direct recording, backline-free gigs, or complex hybrid setups. With the ZEQD-Pre, you get both straightforward simplicity and authentic tube tone with no menus, no IR loading, and no firmware updates — no digital distractions at all — just pure, organic tone and response in a compact, pedalboard-friendly format.

The Amazing EarthQuaker Devices ZEQD-Pre Preamp Pedal
The ZEQD Preamp has been an amazing and unexpected pedal. I play mostly jazz and world music, so I use a clean tone most of the time. I received this pedal on Jan 31st, and since then I've played a bunch of gigs and one recording direct. Not only is it an amazing tone upgrade, but the direct out to the board sounded like a miked cab in a natural way, I didn't miss not miking my actual cabinet! Also, the pedal puts me in the zone when I'm improvising every time. At a recent gig a drummer friend of the singer came (it was a duo gig) and he said "nice sound!". I don't normally get that commment spontaneously. Also, at first, I didn't realize what the pedal was doing until I turned it off!
I can't recommend this pedal enough! It's really something special!
Music background: Professional Musician in NYC since the late 80s.
not what I thought it was
I bought this as pre-amp into my DAW, which works OK I guess. Honestly, I had made up my mind to return it. Then, I put it in front of my 57 Custom Champ just to see what it did. OMG - it lights the front end of the amp on fire in a good way. Sounds like a fully cranked little amp at perfectly acceptable marriage/residential volumes. I realize that most folks aren't using a Champ as a pedal platform, but it you are, get one of these.
Whatever you think the ZEQD is, you are right!
I'm setting up a pedal board for an amp with an effects loop, good clean and drive channels. I dreamed a tube pedal for the input with no more than three drive (klon, distortion, and fuzz) pedals after, with tone controls and a switchable boost...woke up, and there was the announcement of this pedal. I like Earthquaker and Dr. Z, but had none of their products.

I got this from Sweetwater when I saw they had these in stock. Put it in place, and it was exactly as described. Great sound, even at the low drive setting I am using. It's ready to adjust drive and EQ for different guitars. I'm sure it would work great at the end of a chain, too.

Great job!
Great product but read the manual
Totally exceeded my expectations but it does not work if you don't have the proper power supply (says so in the manual). I would have given it 5 stars if it came with the power supply instead of wondering why it kept turning off every 10 minutes.
Music background: Play guitar in a local rock band
Worked for a few minutes!
Well I really wanted to like this pedal, but it worked for only a short while. It did have a great tonality. I used it for about 15 minutes one day and a few days later it developed a problem, no boost function switching, no output when boost is enabled. I'm going to try EarthQuaker support first. I'm sure it's not a tube issue as I own a guitar shop and have spare tubes that I am sure are known good. It's never been dropped and yes I used a regulated power supply with it.
