The Accessible Digital Saxophone

The Yamaha YDS-120 is an excellent place to start if you’ve always wanted to try your hand at saxophone. It’s affordable and very accessible. You can play the YDS-120 anywhere, at any time. Late-night sessions without disturbing others? No problem! With 15-step volume adjustment and high-quality samples of 73 instruments, including 56 soprano, alto, tenor, and baritone saxes, you’re in command — and you’ll always sound great. While not a replacement for acoustic saxophones, the Yamaha YDS-120 is designed to go where no traditional horn can. It runs on USB power or four AAA batteries, so you can connect with software or go busking in the park. This innovative instrument blurs the line between organic and synthetic, providing the best of both worlds by delivering Yamaha’s advanced digital sound with the tactile playing feel of familiar sax fingering. Ready for a fresh, new woodwind experience? Check out the Yamaha YDS-120 from Sweetwater!

Note: A USB power source or batteries are not included with your purchase of the YDS-120. Please contact your Sweetwater Sales Engineer with any questions.

An easy way to slide into saxophone

The YDS-120 doesn’t require reeds or embouchure technique (that’s how saxophonists shape their throat, mouth, and lips to vary their tone and add expression to their sound). If you haven’t played a woodwind instrument, the YDS-120 will, however, help you to develop your breath control. You’ll become familiar with the feel of its genuine Yamaha mouthpiece. Without a reed, it’s more akin to blowing into a recorder. With your breath and the instrument’s breath sensor and analog controller, the YDS-120 gives you unfettered freedom of expression. You’ll also learn sax fingering. The YDS-120 has an authentic saxophone key layout with high F# and Front F keys, plus the low A key you’ll find on baritone saxes. This will make it easier to transition to an acoustic sax later. One of the advantages of the YDS-120 over acoustic saxes is having access to the full range of the saxophone family from bari to soprano — plus 17 other great-sounding instruments to boot! For composing, you can use the micro USB port for connecting to music software on your computer or smartphone. It also includes a headphone terminal and an Aux in jack for playing along with your favorite tunes.

Great for learning and having fun!

While the YDS-120 is no substitute for an actual saxophone, it does provide an easy entry point for the sax-curious musician who is not ready or willing to take the plunge into the endless complexities of embouchure, mouthpieces, reeds, and ligatures. Yamaha, in its wisdom, gave the YDS-120 a standard saxophone key layout. That gives it a major advantage over other digital wind instruments with seemingly arbitrary proprietary key layouts. Based on Yamaha’s own world-class saxophones, the YDS-120 key layout is great for learning sax fingering. Once you master it, you can transfer your fingering skills to any saxophone, and already knowing the fingering will free you to concentrate on developing your embouchure. The YDS-120 is also perfect for just having fun. For the musically inclined, gatherings with family and friends are always more fun when creative musical interaction is involved. With its built-in speaker and 56 voices for soprano, alto, tenor, and baritone saxophones, the YDS-120 is the life of the party when you’re jamming with friends!

Reviews

I knew it was going to be good, I did not expect it to be great!
I knew I was going to like the YDS-120, but I really love this thing. I play alto saxophone and wanted something I could use while traveling, in hotels and other places where I need to be quiet. It has been perfect for that, especially with headphones and its adjustable volume.

The fingering feels almost exactly like my alto, and the breath sensor helps it respond in a way that still feels expressive. The stock neck felt more like a soprano to me, so I had an alto neck 3D printed, and it works great.

I end up playing it all the time. I use it to learn songs and lock in fingerings, then I switch over to my acoustic alto to focus on embouchure while already knowing the notes. The built in sax voices are a huge plus, and having a wide range of other instrument sounds available is just fun for practice.

If you are on the fence about this one, do not wait.
You can play anywhere!
I love this sax. Been playing bari for thirty years but now not much wind left( I'm much older) This thing rocks. Contrary to other posts, you Can use it for performance. I do it all the time. I hook it to an amp and it fills the room. Without having to suck a reed for fifteen minutes and warming it up it's so convenient. It has reverb built in that sounds amazing. I bought two of them and my daughter and I do duets using alto and tenor. I pair with a real bari with another player and you wouldn't know the difference together. I get so many compliments and people are amazed at how this looks. Definitely worth getting rather a beginner or seasoned player.

Perfect for learning
I love this thing. I live in a apt. so I need to practice quietly. I'm just beginning to learn alto sax. With this I can learn the notes and the keys and tonguing. That's 80% of the instrument. All that's left will be the embouchure which is very important of course. However when I'm ready to switch to normal Alto I will a least sound musical. LOL. This could be used in a bar band or house jam easily. You could run it through some effects for some interesting sounds also. For the money it can't be beat in my humble opinion.

Great for practice
I just got the YDS 120 today, and I'm impressed with it. At first, it seemed like the pinky keys and palm keys were wonky and unpredictable. After getting used to things, the action became much more predictable and controllable. Everything is in close proximity and lazy fingers on keys can trigger unpredictable results. For me, this is strictly for practicing and novelty, not performance. The voices aren't good enough, although some of the flutes are okay, and there is something that sounds a bit like a French horn. There are serviceable bari sounds if you aren't too picky. The mpc is very recorder like. Better than my EWI. No chops required, but definitely not for beginners. The keys seem flimsy. I would not force anything like bad triggers. (All mine are good.) My biggest issue right now is the proximity of the portamento button to the thumb hook. The thumb hook is adjustable and there may be a way to disconnect the portamento. Right now, my thumb is sore from playing for about an hour. It looks like this has an "octave lower" key, but it's a low A key. I'm learning to stay away from it when not in use. The keys rattle. Especially the top stack, but who cares? Some people are going to want palm key risers for sure. USBc(?) port for midi out. 1/8" in and out ports for audio. Back in the day, I had a Yamaha midi wind controller that would blow this thing away. If you're serious, go that direction. But this thing is convenient to have handy anywhere, anytime. Someday, mine is going to be a makeshift bari in a sax group. It's not a toy. It would cause too much frustration for that. But, late at night, when everybody else is asleep, there is a niche for this. The keywork appears to be flimsy, but we'll see how much, if any, abuse it can take.

This sax is great. I'm learning and love the sound. Bought a 2nd one for my wife. Well worth price.
