Mobile Sound Just Got Better with the X4C Nanobass

Players who demand more from their practice amp will find the X4C Nanobass multi-instrument combo amplifier by Phil Jones Bass more than delivers masterful portability without compromising on tone and flexible features. While the X4C Nanobass is made for premium bass tones, it is also optimized for more instruments, including electric guitar, ukulele, and electronic drums. Weighing in at approximately five pounds, the X4C Nanobass fits into luggage or backpacks and can easily be carried by hand. A proprietary 4-inch speaker delivers up to 35 watts of power, outperforming many similarly sized amplifiers. Players can opt for near-silent solo practice volumes, beefy output for group practice with others, or something in between, along with Bluetooth, USB-C, and auxiliary options for track playback from a laptop, iPad, smartphone, or another device. More than anything, bassists at Sweetwater admire the X4C Nanobass’ upscale build quality and sound. With a sturdy design that includes carrying handles and a rugged metal grille, the X4C Nanobass from Sweetwater represents a new standard for practice amps.

A mini marvel

The X4C Nanobass pairs travel-friendly dimensions with an impressive output of up to 35 watts, more power than most compact amps and enough oomph to rival combos you won’t ever fit inside a backpack! The X4C Nanobass’s Neo-Power 4-inch proprietary speaker is voiced to match the amp’s power. At peak levels, you’ll feel the X4C’s speaker push air forcefully as it generates the colorful character of a rattling cabinet on a smaller scale. Players control input and output levels, which provides numerous ways to shape tone and volume to any conditions. Moreover, the X4C Nanobass offers extensive 3-band EQ with up to +/-15dB of adjustment per band — a massive range that’s incredibly convenient when using instruments other than bass. From discrete solo practice to acoustic jam sessions, anything is possible!

Practice in any scenario

This rugged X4C Nanobass amp lets players exercise modern control over practice routines. The built-in wireless Bluetooth, USB-C connection, wired auxiliary connection, and 3.5mm output offer more immersive ways to practice out loud with backing tracks or silently using headphones. An independent level control lets you reach the groove where playback feels right, and the proprietary Neo-Power 4-inch speaker is optimized with music playback in mind for a world-class experience.

Reviews

Great for its size.
OK, this is not going to be the amp that you would use in a stadium setting.

But it is the amp that you would use for your practice. Having the Bluetooth so that you can play a backing track from your devices is just so nice. It is also the amp that you would use in a living room setting. It is also the amp that you would use with a few acoustic guitar players. Not overwhelming, just present. I have used it in settings that have pushed its limits. But that being said, it still held its own, and it also made others turn down their volume so that the mix was better and they could hear the bass. I think there's too much volume anyway.

I am using this for my Breedlove fretless acoustic bass, which has a Fishman preamp.

I have used this for my classical guitar, which is awesome. You may need to add a little trouble as this is going to highlight the bass notes. A friend of mine played his telecaster through it, and it also sounded great.

Buy it for what it is. An exceptional little amp that packs a lot of volume in a little package. Very convenient to use in small settings. This is my go to for practice. And it will probably be the thing I throw in the car when I know that a few of us will be getting together to play acoustics.

A truly portable bass amp
I love my 40-pound PJB Briefcase but it's overkill for practice and small jams. Plus it's a chore carrying it up stairs. My U-Bass sounds wonderful on my new Nanobass as a bass amp should and unlike any other small portable amp i've heard.

For battery operating the model X4C Nanobass has a USB-C port located above its AC Power input socket. PJB recommends a power bank with at least 20,000mAh and 65 Watts. I got a 24,000mAh x 140W power bank and took my Nanobass to an outdoor 25-person jam. I played for 4 hours, the battery still had 90% remaining and people said bass sounded great! I'll looking forward to an easier job carrying my small Nanobass to group practices and small jams.

Thanks for all your help, Ben!
Solidly built, sonic precision
This little amp does what it promises: it's a great-sounding little practice amp that is solidly built and delivers a really good sound, with and without headphones. With bluetooth capability, it's an excellent practice amp that does a much better job on the low end than all other mini amps that I've tested (and one that I own). At 35W and a teeny speaker, you need to keep your expectations within specs - I've used it in jam sessions with a piano (real, not electric) and it holds its own. It will not, however, be heard over drums or an aggressive guitarist. And it's not a gig amp, unless you're playing in a tiny coffeehouse or an elevator. But it's not pitched for that kind of use, so the engineers at PJB have kept the marketing team in check. That's good. I definitely recommend this amp, and the only reason I didn't rate it a full five stars is its price. It's a bit steep, but you do have to pay for quality.
Music background: Fair bassist, fair bassoonist, mediocre pianist, passable guitarist.
