Lift Tone Two Ways with Cory Wong’s Custom Comp!

Cory Wong knows one thing all too well: dynamics fuel grooves. The Wampler Cory Wong Compressor pedal from the Grammy-nominated guitarist delivers premium dynamics shaping power, plus expanded connectivity with an extra XLR output for interfaces, PAs, and other direct methods. For years, Cory depended on the Wampler Ego for sparkling compression, complete with unrivaled blend and tone controls. Wampler revisited the Ego’s design and added a powerful boost section at Cory’s request. Hardly a rubber stamp addition, this independent boost section has its own footswitch and level control with two selectable EQ profiles — flat boost or mid-forward for rich saturation in the critical 550Hz range. Use it to push big riffs into the spotlight, as a makeup gain tool, a saturator, and much more. Other signature touches include an always-on button that locks the compressor section, top-mounted input jacks, premium heavy-duty barrel knobs, soft footswitches, and a ground lift for clarifying XLR signal of interference. Get back in the saddle and take control of your tone with this workhorse Wampler pedal from Sweetwater!

Let masterful shaping begin

For clean, funky tones that shine, Cory Wong turns to this pedal to subtly drive his cleans with precision control over EQ, sustain, and more. Unlike many compressors, Wampler’s blend and tone controls let you preserve dry signal and enhance character to astounding degrees, both subtle and extreme. Such meticulous control range crosses over easily from stages to studios, making this Cory’s go-to. Those who favor drive and heft can also get great mileage — after all, it’s based on an extremely popular, versatile compressor that happens to be Cory’s favorite. The boost channel’s proximity to the compressor makes it an ideal clean-tone saturator, but the boost’s range facilitates much more. Use it in tandem with the compressor for a massive solo boost that jumps from the speakers or on its own for dynamic bumps of any size. Placed near the front or end of long cable runs, the buffered boost channel also works well for passive signal preservation and active makeup gain that ensures usable levels.

Quiet, clean I/O for studios and stages

Are you tired of pedals that rock onstage but fall short in the studio? Of course, you are! The Cory Wong Compressor does both — exceptionally well. Soft footswitches fuel quiet channel hops and are paired with a 3-way LED for reading what’s active at a glance. This pedal’s XLR out is a huge asset in the studio, especially for clean styles. Use it to go straight into an interface or console for bright signature cleans with Wong-like presence. Used live, the XLR out ensures convenient routing for PAs and other direct methods. Of course, you can always use both outputs simultaneously to split your signal. Try recording direct via XLR while the primary output is sent to a separate effects chain for double-tracked depth that’s ripe for stereo panning.

Reviews

Versatile and Full of Features
This compressor/boost is chocked full of features. The impact it has on sustain or attack loudness is immediately noticeable, your picking can be made louder, and notes longer.

The boost is useful at times when playing on the clean channel of an amp to add a bit of a lead tone to your sound, great when playing with loops. Both the flat and mid boost are great, I tend to leave it on the mid though.

With an overdrive pedal like a Tube Screamer or similar the sustain you can get out of it with the compressor on is very long, multiple times the time it takes to fade out with it off.

The XLR input on its own is really useful when connected to an audio interface. When used in combination with an amp simulator like Neural DSP it sounds incredible. The difference in sustain is very noticeable.
Absolutely amazing
After my Stratocasters, this pedal is probably the best money I have ever spent on music equipment. Obviously, the compression is dynamite (though I have to admit that it might be a little on the subtle side); the boost is spectacular-- as a guy who likes to keep it clean, this is everything I need in terms of drive. Here's the big headline, though: it is an exceptional DI! I have a high end DI box, amp sim pedals, tube and solid states with a 57 etc etc. A signal chain of Strat straight through this to the front/PA is top tier tone. I had to travel light recently and played various unforgiving situations with just this and a guitar and I don't know if I've ever sounded better. As a DI into a recording console or Focusrite, the same. If you're looking for Motown tones, funk, anything clean and pristine, this little box has all the magic you could ever want. 10/10. Actually I am considering buying 10 of these, because I don't want to live without it again. Highest possible recommendation.
Soooo Good for Playing Live w/Coils
I've owned this for a year now, and it's been on my board the entire time. I particularly love three features after a year of using it with a Strat:
1) The sound quality. It's fantastic, and with a Strat it brings out all the "life" in all five settings without any volume loss.
2) The clean boost options. When it's time for a solo you can cut through the mix without any noise, probably due to the internal integration. It's crystal clear. You get to decide which boost tone you like better (whether you want to boost the mids). One usually works better depending on the song or band, but both sound great.
3) The "always on" button for the compressor on the side. I have big feet, so I avoid standard size pedals with two buttons. They're too close together for me. In this case, I can hit the boost with no worry. If I accidentally hit the on/off, nothing will happen.
Definitely a five-star pedal!

Is It Good?
I've previously used a Pigtronix compressor, which I hated, and then a Keeley 2 knob compressor that was recommended as a great way to compress my Strat style guitars and keep the volume consistent between all five pickup positions. I love the tone of the Keeley, but it can be very noisy with the sustain set high, and in the context I most often play (worship) I noticed that, even though the compressor kept me even, people would still say they couldn't hear the electric guitar very well during instrumentals and solos, depending on who was mixing. The classic volunteer sound person scenario! So then I came across this pedal: the addition of attack, tone, and blend on the compressor side to deal with potential noise, plus the merging of a clean boost in the same pedal footprint to bump it up for solos and instrumentals, so I had to try it.

First: I've had bad luck a few times with "merged" pedals that supposedly integrate two pedals into one chassis. They just seem to have some interference problems and tonal shortcomings when compared to using two separate pedals with all their features. That is absolutely NOT a problem with this pedal. The compressor is tonally beautiful, quiet, and easy to understand and use. A big step up from my Keeley two knob. The clean boost sounds great in either mode, depending on your taste and what the song calls for. The boost level has a huge sweep, so it's very easy to avoid overdoing the volume while finding a sweet amount of gain. They both sound very good alone; they both sound very good together.

Second: Sometimes unwanted features really get in the way of the most usable features on a pedal, and I was a little worried about that with the XLR/DI features on this pedal. I seriously doubt I will ever use them. The thing is, they're completely hidden once the pedal is on a board, and the price of the pedal is right where it should be, regardless of the added DI features. Same goes for the "always on" compressor button. It's very easy to access if you WANT to push it, and very easy to ignore if you don't care about it. Once it's on a board there's really no way it could be activated accidentally. Super-clean design.

It's good!
Cory Wong Pedal
I really like the Cory Wong Compressor and Boost Pedal that I purchased. It has a very good compression aspect that will hold notes as long as you want the, and the boost, when placed with it, provides a clean sustained tone that is unique and not distorted. Recommended.
