Hard-hitting Tone, Ample Playability and Exotic Looks

The EVH Wolfgang Standard Exotic was designed for one thing: hard-hitting rock ‘n’ roll. Built to Eddie Van Halen’s exacting standards, this axe exhibits the ferocious tone and effortless playability that players of his caliber demand. Beyond that, its eye-catching poplar burl top ensures that all eyes will be on you every time you step on stage. Enjoy a distinctive woody character and ample sustain, thanks to dual direct-mounted EVH Wolfgang humbuckers. Benefit from maximum stability and resistance to temperature and humidity, by virtue of a graphite-reinforced, bolt-on baked maple neck. An EVH-branded Floyd Rose Special tremolo and locking nut maintain intonation — even after extreme whammy bar abuse. The EVH Wolfgang Standard Exotic is the high-performance hard rock machine you’ve been waiting for.

A rock machine that's built for serious fretwork

At Sweetwater, we've been consistently impressed by EVH guitars, and the Wolfgang Standard Exotic is no exception. From its basswood body to its baked maple neck and fingerboard, this guitar just screams quality. This amazing guitar is made for serious playing, with a compound-radius fingerboard, an EVH Floyd Rose bridge and locking nut, and direct-mounted EVH humbuckers. You also get two domed black knobs for total control over your tone and volume and ultra-stable EVH tuners. All the components come together to make a high-performance electric guitar.

Graphite-reinforced neck for stability and playability

The neck is one of the most important aspects of any instrument, which is why this EVH Wolfgang Standard Exotic's bolt-on neck is reinforced with graphite, offering amazing stability. You'll also love the playability and feel of the compound-radius fretboard on this Wolfgang WG Standard. The fretboard radius goes from 12" at the nut to a comfortable and flat 16" radius on the upper frets.

Floyd Rose tremolo allows for twisting, bending, and huge dive-bombs

First gaining popularity in the 1980s, the Floyd Rose tremolo's locking design keeps your guitar in tune — even if you like to perform extreme pitch pyrotechnics. You can force the whammy bar all the way down to the guitar's body for psychotic dive-bombing. No matter how hard you're shredding, you'll maintain your tuning stability, thanks to the Floyd Rose tremolo's locking design.

EVH Wolfgang Standard Exotic Features:

  • Designed by rock legend Eddie Van Halen
  • Poplar burl top offers an eye-catching appearance
  • Basswood body and dual EVH pickups deliver resonant tone, sustain, and crunch
  • Compound-radius allows for exceptional speed and comfort
  • EVH-branded Floyd Rose tremolo allows for twisting, bending, and dive-bombing
  • Comfort cut forearm contour for maximum playing ease
  • Belly cut allows the guitar to fit comfortably against your torso

A beautiful, fun guitar

After playing around with an acoustic for 12 years, I received my first electric guitar---this magnificent Wolfgang Standard--- in January 2021. The American-made Wolfies were always beyond my price range, but the more-affordable new standard lineup made it easy to make this emotion-based choice.

What a beautiful instrument. The fit and finish are top-notch. The neck is as wonderful as everyone else says; it's so easy to play. The pickups are hot, and this thing seems happiest with the guitar volume turned wide-open. But still, you can get some good clean sounds with the guitar volume set to low. Anyone would be just fine playing this guitar in a worship group; the appearance is very classy. The Floyd Rose is cool, and for me, there are some things to learn regarding proper setup. It's worth the effort to learn about it.

I've paired this guitar with the Fender Mustang GTX 100 amp, and this is proving to be a whole lot of fun. I'll review the amp after having a little more experience with it.

I mentioned how this was an emotion-based choice. There are so many terrific, affordable guitars now. But as he did for at least one generation, Eddie Van Halen provided my coming-of-age soundtrack. The opportunity to own and play an instrument that he designed and played was just too good to pass up. I've played this guitar every day since I got it, and now I realize that for the kind of music and sound that I want, a Telecaster or something similar is more in-line with my needs. But there are zero regrets here. I am very happy with this guitar!

The Sweetwater buying process makes it easy for me to think about buying that next guitar. Matt Alexander is my sales rep, and he pays close attention to the details to be sure that every order (even the small ones) is right. For my Wolfgang Standard, Matt was patient while I took the time to choose the exact one. He sent me detailed photos of available guitars as they came in; these models were a bit scarce in January 2021. When I decided on The One, Matt made sure everything was handled correctly. I requested a full setup, and the guitar arrived ready to play----in perfect tune. I am a convinced Sweetwater customer.

Definitely Good Guitar for the Price

First of all, just want to say how nice the guitar looks! It's really beautiful. Plays good - really like the neck on this and it's easy to play. Giving it 4 stars only only because of a couple things with this particular one. The Floyd Rose is a Floyd Rose Special - so know that if you get this guitar, it's not meant to really be a floating trem system. The body isn't really routed to give you the ability to pull up to high on the bar if you WERE to make it floating - no cavity for the string locks to go down into. You might be able to maybe pull it up 1/2 or 1 step but that's it. So the bridge is sitting on the body. This would give you the ability to add a D-Tuna if you wanted to however.

As soon as I got it I tuned it to Eb because I'm playing in a show doing VH stuff - the bridge resting on the body also made that a really easy adjustment. Once I changed the strings and stretched them out - it stays in tune really well.

The fine tuners were really grindy to turn - I put some 3 in 1 oil on them and it helped, but I'll probably be looking for some better fine tuners - ones that are smoother and easier to turn. I checked the Floyd Rose site to see if I could swap out the bridge entirely for a higher end one and you can, but, again, the body isn't routed for the string locks soooo...I probably won't do that.

Lastly, and I just noticed this last night - there is an issue with the input jack. If the cable is moved just right, it loses most of the connection and I'm losing a lot of signal. Tried multiple cables and also tried those in my other guitars, the only one it does it on is this one so that will require some work.

I learned Runnin with the Devil real quick, at least mostly just to see how it was and overall really happy with it.

Always wanted a "nice" guitar

I started playing a beat up old Aria strat-copy back when I was a teen, and had plenty of fun through a half dozen years and a few bands. That guitar was always finicky, falling out of tune, breaking strings, some flaky wiring, etc, but I was a kid who was mostly just happy to rock out. Well, now I'm older and I wanted to get back into playing and actually feel good about WHAT I was playing on. I'm not a great guitarist, but I didn't want to be frustrated by my instrument. So, I did a little research and decided that I'd upgrade to this EVH. Wow--I never knew what I had been missing! It FEELS good and it sounds great! To have an instrument that's actually easy to pick up and play even though I'm out of practice... I probably would feel that way about almost any decent new instrument, but this one called to me. I swapped out the strings for a set of GHS flatwound stainless steel, and now it's even slicker. And the Floyd Rose and string locking system keep everything so solid that I barely ever have to tune it much.

Yes I'm a middle aged dude probably trying too hard to regain some of the glory of my youth, and this instrument is helping me to do that.

Great guitar for the money!

Other than having to check the neck joint screws, tuning, truss rod, action, and intonation which I always check after getting any new guitar. It wasn't staying in tune. So I checked the saddle screws and the string locking screws all were a little loose. So I had to re-adjust the claw screws to level the floyd. Now it's great! The pics of this guitar don't do it justice. The burnt maple neck looks cool and smells nice! As far as the sound, it's as good as my EVH striped series and my Charvel San Dimas. You just can't beat it for the money! So just get one already!
Music background: 20 year guitar enthusiast. I've owned upper end PRS and Gibsons to lower end Yamahas. I've also owned a Marshall JCM 800, a Peavey 1x12 combo, a Blackstar 2x12 combo, and a EVH LBX-S w/2x12 cab.

I like

Been playing this for a couple months, now even my classical is gathering dust. Brilliant fretboard makes this feel more expensive than it is. Great electronics and pickups, I won't be swapping anything out. Might add a dtuna in the future, maybe not. I don't use the tremolo that much but it works and stays in tune. Not sure if I like the strings or not, but that wouldn't stop me from buying this anyway. Can't go wrong with this guitar for clean or crunch. It also looks good, and I love the unique headstock. The lack of binding the top is a cool move as well.
