Vintage-voiced, Voltage-controlled Voltaic Oscillation

Considering the time, attention, and detail poured into their pedals throughout the years, it’s safe to say that EarthQuaker Devices knows a few things about sound design. The company’s distinctive, guitar pedal-informed approach to synthesis is evident with The Wave Transformer. This galvanizing Eurorack offering’s vintage-inspired voicing and analog architecture elicit endlessly malleable hues of sound shaping, boasting seven simultaneous wave outputs across an immaculately pitch-tracked, 8-octave range that has Sweetwater’s synthesists thoroughly impressed. A range of classic waveform outputs are accompanied by novel circuitry that underpins a swath of FM and Sync modes, nestled alongside a Complex oscillator for near-limitless permutations of synth tones. Additional waveform-specific sub-oscillator outputs, multiple tuning controls, and pulse-width modulation (PWM) are joined by extensive CV controls and inspiring patching opportunities, resulting in a formidable module with heaps of character. When you’re ready, you can wield the titular Transform knob to send your sonics into a new dimension.

Complex sonics, straightforward layout, and exacting control

One of the many ways EQD sets The Wave Transformer apart from other complex-oscillator modules is its highly detailed control system, intentionally designed to encourage multitudes of interoperative use, thanks to a diverse array of I/O options. Its seven simultaneous wave outputs comprise Sine, Triangle, Saw, Rectangle, Sub Pulse, Sub Square, and Complex voicings, the last of which conjures a galvanizing voice through a mix of odd-order, even-order, and sub-frequency harmonics that transform your original waveform’s harmonic architecture. Moreover, the module’s Shape Insert jack can be used for increasingly esoteric wave transformations, deploying whatever you feed into it through the novel Transform circuitry. For greater depth, you can choose between 1- or 2-octave offsets for your sub-oscillator, which can be toggled for internal or external origins. Hard and Soft Sync inputs augment your sonic palette even further. Meanwhile, options for either Linear or Exponential FM can be used in conjunction with any Sync/Sub configuration for truly compelling, original synthesis.

Flexible tuning and timbral transformations

Whether you’re after subterranean basses, percussive plucks, scorching leads, or any other part along the compositional spectrum, The Wave Transformer is uniquely equipped to do it all. This module successfully tracks pitch across an immense 8-octave range, leaving almost no room for error. Given The Wave Transformer’s trio of tuning options, you're afforded an unprecedented degree of sonic precision. Tune and Fine Tune knobs allow for coarse and fine control of the pitch across a 7- or 1-octave range, respectively, while the µTune accommodates hyper-detailed pitch adjustments within an exacting range of just 25 cents. Combining these controls with offsetable FM and PWM parameters, alongside any infinite number of potential external sources, grants you access to a tremendously complex world of timbral sculpting. Finally, nearly every aspect of The Wave Transformer can be individually controlled via CV signals, seamlessly integrating with your setup for reactive sonics and dynamic soundscapes.

Reviews

Brutiful
This oscillator caught me by suprise. I didn't expect that a pedal company would have delivered such a well thought out module. I was patching with a friend's case, when I tried it for the first time. I was super surprised at just how good it sounds and all of the features. I bought my own a few weeks ago, and it keeps replacing other oscillators in my patches. Others sound anemic by comparison. It has a presence and wild character to it that just cuts through. I'd love to see more modules by Earthquakers.
Pretty Darn Cool!
I love what happens when guitar pedal manufacturers decide to make Eurorack gear. I'm getting back into Eurorack and really appreciate such an elegant module with unusual features at a comparatively great price. EQD - if you're listening, I'm a big fan. Keep coming out with new things for us noisemaking freaks. I'm still a novice but I'm happy with all the wave forms and especially the sub octave options. Pretty sweet!

My favorite Oscillator!!
This Eurorack module is incredible! I only wish my rack had more hp space so I can have 2. Looks like I'm buying another rack case. ;-)
Great bang for the buck!
This module has been really great as a beginner. It has a lot of features at a great price and I am finding more use for it as I learn about synthesis. I have been able to get a wide range of tones. Everything from mellow to heavy. This will not be leaving my rack anytime soon!
