Tone and Playability Worthy of Its Name

Eddie Van Halen's 35 years of experience and knowledge are brilliantly reflected in the EVH Wolfgang Special. Direct-mounted EVH Wolfgang humbuckers yield tremendous girth and bite, in addition to incredible resonance and sustain. This guitar's graphite-reinforced quartersawn maple neck was carved and rolled to Eddie's exacting standards, creating insane levels of playability. Intentionally positioned against the body, the dive-bomb-only D-Tuna-equipped Floyd Rose lets you mimic Eddie’s signature trem work with ease, along with giving you instant access to Drop D tuning. The EVH Wolfgang Special reflects a commitment to quality worthy of the extraordinary guitarist it's named after.

A rock machine that's built for serious fretwork

At Sweetwater, we've been consistently impressed by EVH guitars, and the Wolfgang Special is no exception. From its basswood body to its maple neck and ebony fingerboard, this guitar just screams quality — and that's just the tonewoods! This gorgeous guitar is made for serious playing, with a compound-radius fingerboard, an EVH Floyd Rose bridge and locking nut, and direct-mounted EVH humbuckers. The controls are top-notch, too. You get a handy 3-way pickup selector and low-friction volume pot for speedy access to tones and swells. Not to worry — a high-friction tone pot prevents unwanted slippage when you've got your pinky in there. All these components come together to make a guitar that looks absolutely stunning and plays even better.

Floyd Rose tremolo allows for twisting, bending, and huge dive-bombs

First gaining popularity in the 1980s, the Floyd Rose tremolo's locking design keeps your guitar in tune, even if you like to perform extreme pitch pyrotechnics. You can force the whammy bar all the way down to the guitar's body for psychotic dive-bombing. No matter how hard you're shredding, you'll maintain your tuning stability, thanks to the Floyd Rose tremolo's locking design. On top of that, you can easily switch to Drop D tuning, courtesy of the Wolfgang Special's D-Tuna.

Quartersawn neck for stability and playability

The neck is one of the most important aspects of any instrument, which is why this EVH Wolfgang Special features a quartersawn maple neck. Besides looking good, the straight grain of quartersawn necks is significantly more stable than plain-sawn necks and less likely to warp, twist, or shrink. You'll also love the playability and feel of the compound-radius fretboard on this Wolfgang Special. The fretboard radius goes from 12" at the nut to a comfortable and flat 16" radius on the upper frets.

EVH Wolfgang Special Solidbody Electric Guitar Features:

  • Designed by rock legend Eddie Van Halen
  • Basswood body and dual EVH pickups deliver resonant tone, sustain, and crunch
  • Compound-radius fingerboard allows for exceptional speed and comfort
  • EVH-branded Floyd Rose tremolo allows for twisting, bending, and dive-bombing
  • Dive-bomb-only D-Tuna-equipped Floyd Rose lets you mimic Eddie's signature trem work with ease, along with giving you instant access to Drop D tuning
  • Low-friction volume pot elicits speedy swells
  • High-friction tone pot prevents unwanted slippage

What is Demo Gear?

At Sweetwater, we're so picky that what we call a "demo" is actually better than what most music retailers sell as "new" gear! Our gear hasn't endured hundreds of people a week plunking away at all the keyboards, fumbling through Stairway to Heaven on every guitar or playing with every fader and knob on a mixer or control surface.

What demo means to us is that we've had it out of the box, or maybe it was in a customer's hands for a few days and isn't "factory fresh" as a result. Every demo item we sell has Sweetwater's 2-year Total Confidence Coverage™ warranty, and has been tested and verified up to "new" specs by our factory-authorized technicians to make sure it's in perfect working order before we ship it to you.

Note: While demo items from EVH do not include the Fender Musical Instruments Corporation warranty, you can shop with confidence knowing that this item is backed and covered by Sweetwater’s 2-year Total Confidence Coverage™ warranty.

When you buy a Demo item at Sweetwater, you get:
  • 2-year Total Confidence Coverage Warranty™!
  • Products inspected and tested by our factory-authorized techs, guaranteed to function like new (or better)!
  • FREE shipping on most items

Very Nice !! Extremely satisfied

Gigged the guitar first weekend I owned it. Played well right out of the box. It did have a QC issue with the jack plate installed 90 degrees off. This is made in Mexico. Worked with my rep Ian Lemberg and customer service and they remedied with a 10% credit back. I could have returned it, or did a warranty claim, however as a collector and a gigging musician, the guitar will be played and not hung on a display

As for the guitar, the neck profile fits my hand well and is very comfortable, more so than my Gibson Studio 60s slim profile. Reminds me of the necks I learned how to play when I was young. Very happy. Satin neck makes going up and down the neck easy, especially when playing out doors when humid and hot.

The pickups and pots articulate well with the knobs. Not sure what kind they are but these work well and sound great through my Fender GTX100 settings I use. More clarity even with dirt on them. Have the clarity for Tom Petty and the grit for AC/DC.

The Floyd rose trem is good. Stays in tune after dives and whamming. Fine tuning knobs a little stiff. I will give the system some nut sauce to smooth out. The D tuna is a great addition as my band plays songs needing the drop D setup.

Overall very satisfied. Thinking about getting another for halfste step tunings.

Purchased a purple one. Finish was great, just a minor blemish in the binding at the cutout that does not affect playability.

Got a EVH case to protect it. Nice case, TSA latches, just feels a little cheap for the price point. Internal Compartment door is flimsy and cheap feeling.

Over all I see why Eddy loved this design. I wish I would have discovered it earlier.

Rock On!

Great buy, great guitar, it is a great collection piece with great EVH sound

Has to be one of the smallest feeling, great playing guitars. If you are toggling between the 5150 and the Wolfgang, me personally would still get the 51510, I bought both the same day, both are amazing sounding and feeling guitars, the Wolfgang is just a bit smaller body, doesn't have a kill switch and some better finish options, but the 5150 feel and sound is just a smidge better in my opinion. I do favor the 5150, but am very happy with both, looks, feel and sound. I would say one large factor if trying to decide, if I was buying for a smaller person, like middle school average, I would get the Wolfgang for it's slightly smaller body. Both of these are amazing high quality, excellent for price and features. They are so fun, I blew up my little practice amp's speaker of 4 years because I could not resist cranking it up and letting them scream the way they are meant to. Well worth the forced upgrade!!! If you have never ordered from Sweetwater before, have no fear, great packing, fast shipping, excellent support (Jay Aden), just follow the 24 hour climatization and equalization process on the box.

I'm Pleasantly Surprised

I bought this guitar as a 50th birthday present for myself. I'd always been curious about the EVH guitars but I'm normally a PRS player, so I'd never taken a chance on one of these. I was looking for a bang-around guitar, one that I wasn't afraid of getting dinged up or stolen at a gig. Forget THAT. When I opened the box, I was a bit worried. No case or gig bag so I was hoping it wasn't damaged in shipping. It wasn't, thankfully, and the set-up on it was excellent. Well done, Sweetwater! Upon plugging this guitar in, there was a familiarity right away. The neck shape is comfortable and smooth. The fretboard was in perfect shape, no dryness. The fret ends were smooth. The only thing it needed was a bit of tuning. The pickups sound great. Great bite in the bridge with a more rounded neck tone. It sounds killer with or without gain. Obviously, this guitar is designed for speed, but it would fit any style of music. Overall, the fit & finish were immaculate as well, the purple metallic finish looks amazing. I didn't have high expectations since this is a mid-price guitar. But the Fender Mexico plant that produced this is turning out some outstanding guitars whose quality far exceeds their price point. I would recommend springing for the EVH Wolfgang case also. As much as I bought this to get beat up, now I fear for its safety :) I highly recommend this instrument.

Way Better Than Expected

I was looking for a Floyd-equipped guitar for my 50th birthday. I didn't want to wait for a custom order & wanted something that I wouldn't mind getting knocked around, nicked or scratched. I've owned a version of nearly every EVH signature model. I still have 2 EBMM & a Charvel Art Series. I ordered this model expecting it to be on par with most Mexican-made Fender guitars. When it arrived, I was pleasantly surprised by the fit & finish. The purple metallic finish was flawless, hardware was solid & no detectable issues. The die-cast tuners could be upgraded to locking but with a locking nut, they're fine. The setup from Sweetwater was great so I plugged in the guitar & got to business. I was SHOCKED at how easy & smooth this thing plays. The fretboard & fret work are stellar. The EVH pickups are aggressive but smooth & controllable. I was able to dial up rock, metal, blues & country tones with ease, it's not a one trick pony. The low friction volume pot can be an adjustment as it's really easy to overrun your desired spot or knock out of adjustment. After a few minutes though, it's not a big deal. The tone pot does what a tone pot does, roll off high end. I picked up the leather EVH strap & matching case. Both outstanding. The only things I would change about this guitar are the tuners, upgrade the frets to stainless steel & eliminate the tone pot. Regardless, I highly recommend this guitar. As Ferris Bueller said "If you have the means, I highly recommend picking one up!"

Great Guitar

This is the first new guitar I have purchased in the 35 years. It's Awesome. Leave it to Eddie to design a guitar for all levels of players abilities and styles. He is truly missed.
