Eye-catching Shell Pack with Powerful Sound

TAMA's Starclassic Walnut/Birch Lacquer drums take the basic design of their acclaimed Starclassic Maple series and put a cool twist on it. These drums feature the combination of mellower birch with the stiffness of walnut. This results in a supremely dynamic sound that features the characteristic warmth of birch shells enhanced by the heavier attack of walnut plies. Beyond that, Starclassic Walnut/Birch Lacquer drums come complete with all of the outstanding hardware that sets the Starclassic series apart. This includes TAMA's die-cast hoops, Star-Cast mounting system, and Quick-Lock tom brackets, plus each shell comes outfitted with quality Evans heads.

Premium die-cast zinc hoops provide consistent tuning and superior tone

Did you know that the hoops on your drum affect far more than your tuning stability? That's why TAMA created premium die-cast zinc hoops for their Starclassic Walnut/Birch toms. Manufactured via a high-density injection molding process, rather than a conventionally stamped triple-flanged hoop method, these extremely consistent hoops provide uniform bolt contact and give your Starclassic shell pack a crisper attack with added high-end resonance.

Evans durability and solid sound

The toms included in this Starclassic shell pack feature Evans Genera G2 2-ply clear batter heads and Genera G1 1-ply clear bottom heads, while the bass drum makes use of an EQ4 clear batter head. The G2 sports two plies, 7-mil each, and delivers an excellent blend of sustain, depth, and attack, while offering consistency and durability. The G1 offers a blend of sustain, warmth, and sensitivity via a 10-mil single-ply film. Exclusive 10-mil single-ply film construction imbues the EQ4 with durability and a woody attack that speaks, both live and in the studio. All three of these drumheads are versatile, making them a great choice for drummers who switch between a variety of styles.

TAMA crafts top-shelf drums for top-shelf drummers

TAMA builds their drums with painstaking attention to detail, precision, and care in order to deliver the best drums possible. And countless touring drummers and session aces, as diverse as Anika Nilles and Metallica's Lars Ulrich, swear by them. Yet in addition to crafting superb drums, TAMA is determined to innovate on the hardware front, as well. Their Iron Cobra Coil bass drum pedals are among the world's most popular, and you'll find that cymbal stands, snare stands, and drum thrones from TAMA are just as heavy-duty and reliable.

  • 8" x 10" rack tom
  • 9" x 12" rack tom
  • 12" x 14" floor tom
  • 14" x 16" floor tom

Reviews

I love my Tama Walnut Birch Starclassic
Workmanship is spectacular, finish is first class, sound is impressive. Nice and tight. Resonance is particularly impressive as there is little to no overtones. Floor toms are designed to absorb shocks so the legs are essentially floating (hence the wobble if you shakem) but stable nonetheless. Paired w Fat Spruce snare...im loving my setup
Music background: gigs since 1989
Excellent kit!
I’ve always played Tama drums. Moving up to a Starclassic series has been a treat! The Star mounting system is great quality as expected and packed with very convenient features. The shells are impeccable and very beautiful. Love the Satin Sapphire Fade. Easy to tune with a great feel and tone. Very pleased!
great buy
to premise: this is a value review - quality/price. these could be described as upper middle class drums with a few extra bucks in the bank thrown in. additionally, my product test was done after re-siknning: evans ec2 frosted batters and evans genera resos. (emad set on the bass.) the batters are my personal preference as I believe birch shells generally sound best with coated batters. In the case of this hybrid, I chose the natural inbetweener - frosted. nevertheless, the resos are a very large and clearly needed improvement over stock.

fit and finish: as to be expected. no problems noted. no irregularities in detail noted. lacquer finish is superior. using a tama starphonic copper snare which, aside from being a sonic match made in heaven to this kit, has a dark, matte-like finish which blends notably well with the "fade" portion of the program. I judged the die cast hoops to be on the light side compared to pearl mastercasts, for example. however, i concluded they are indeed very well matched to the shells - nothing gets choked yet nothing gets out of control.

ok. very pretty but can they fight? oh yeah. tune up was a breeze. I set all my tom resos to a baseline of 75 on the drum dial and work from there then I tune the tops by ear. basically, it was one and done. no further tweaking needed.

they simply sound great. clear notes on the toms sound and get out of the way but not so quickly as to lose voice or warmth. and yes, they do have warmth which is cleanly attributable to the walnut. it's a stern, fatherly warmth though. these babies will have the last word. they can cut like a saber and growl like a bear.

however, the true test of great drums is how they sound with the lightest of sticking and these drums can hold their head up here most particularly at their price point. granted,it's a long rode from starclassic to star but this is great value. (and yes, I do believe the shock mounted floor tom legs perform as advertised.)

recommended usage: gospel, r&b, rock, fusion, hard pop, lighter metal, punk, etc. least said, this ain't such a bad way to spend your drum money. Most said, pro drums at a bargain price.

and lest I forget. thanks to all the very nice and very professional people at sweetwater for their assistance. special shout-out to wayne davis. he's a cool cat so it's no surprise he plays cool cat sonor vintage drums. (If you've ever considered these you should definitely talk to wayne.) essentially, you can tell he likes his work. (even given slightly quirky orders like mine!) this makes doing business a whole bunch easier all around. (also shoutout: Ikes - what up?)
