A Classic Ribbon Mic Reimagined

Warm Audio once again demonstrates why it’s considered a champion in the arena of classic microphone cloning with the WA-FT Fen-tone ribbon microphone. In addition to retaining a classic ’50s ribbon mic’s compact, pencil-style design with ventilated sides, Warm Audio kicked things up several notches by adding a custom Japanese ribbon, a rare-earth neodymium magnet, and a custom CineMag USA transformer. If that weren’t enough, the company included a selectable all-analog 26dB JFET in-line preamp! You’ll also benefit from the Fen-tone’s broad 30Hz to 15kHz frequency response and its hefty 148dB max SPL that collectively enable you to capture that timeless ribbon tone across a very wide variety of sources. Everything old is new again with the Warm Audio WA-FT Fen-tone ribbon microphone.

Vintage tones via contemporary components

The WA-FT Fen-tone deftly demonstrates that you don’t need potentially fragile, decades-old components to achieve true vintage sound. Its custom CineMag USA transformer, rare-earth neodymium magnet, and custom Japanese ribbon (99.1% aluminum, 1.8-micron thick) work in tandem to give you that sound on horns, electric guitars, drum overheads, and so much more.

In-line JFET preamp

An ingenious addition, the selectable 26dB in-line JFET preamp on the WA-FT Fen-tone enables you to use it with any audio interface preamp out there. Simply switch on +48-volt phantom power, and you’re ready to roll.

Warm Audio WA-FT Features:

Reviews

Solid, Classic Ribbon Sound
Warm has done a great job of porting this classic mic over to modern day recording. Check the video out below for a deeper dive and a bunch of studio examples using this mic vs other popular ribbons. Warm has decided to keep only the aesthetic design of the mic and forego the original internals. The switch on the front, rather than a full, hi-pass filter and off switch like on the original fentone, is now an on/off switch for a phantom powered mic boost circuit. This circuit works really well and doesn't change the tonality of the mic to a noticeable degree, however it does give the mic a much needed gain bump and makes it so that just about any preamp out there can use this mic with ease. In passive mode, the mic is a little gain hungry, but not overly so. Tonally, its REALLY close to an R121 with some minor differences in the top end.(see video for comparison) My only gripe with the mic, isn't with the mic itself, its with the clip included. The clip is one of those universal spring loaded clips. You know the kind that usually fail after a short wile of regular use where the spring shoots out after the plastic holding it together snaps under the pressure. While that HASN'T happened, the tension on the clip IS high and it just feels like its a matter of time before it happens. AT makes a shock-mount clip that fits the mic nicely. Definitely a recommended accessory. The mic is beautiful both tonally and aesthetically.
