Juice Your Recordings with the Sound of a Tape-era Legend

It had to happen sooner or later. Leave it to the innovators at Warm Audio to build a microphone preamp based on the tube electronics of the iconic American professional tape machine that recorded countless radio-ready hits during the golden age of analog. From the rock pioneers of the ’50s and ‘60s to today’s sound-savvy artists, the legendary “351” has been the secret sauce in the signal chain that delivers the vintage-flavored warmth and color we all seek in our own recordings. The Warm Audio WA-2MPX 2-channel tube mic/line/instrument preamp incorporates an original-spec circuit design, authentically reproducing the coveted analog sonics of the original. Handwired and hand assembled using only premium, all-discrete components, including custom-wound, original-spec large-core CineMag USA transformers, the WA-2MPX serves up instant “sounds-like-a-record” punch for tracks that blast right out of the speakers. But there’s so much more to this amazing preamp that makes it indispensable to modern hybrid studio workflows.

Original circuit design, full feature set

While staying true to the original circuit design, Warm Audio added all the modern amenities that make the WA-2MPX impressively versatile in the studio. Used in conjunction with the preamp gain and output level controls, the tape saturation switch makes it easy to tweak your gain structure from wide-open and crystalline to sizzling hot. The addition of Warm Audio’s classic tone switch lets you modify microphone input transformer impedance for mic optimization or extra analog color. Also onboard are great-sounding, per-channel instrument DI inputs, handy highpass and lowpass filters, polarity reverse, and of course, 48V phantom power. The WA-2MPX employs three premium vacuum tubes per channel: two 12AX7s and one 12AU7. In a stroke of engineering genius, Warm Audio included a high-gain switch that engages the third tube, boosting the available gain from 70dB to a staggering 90dB. Now you can finally deploy your favorite, notoriously low-gain passive ribbon mics on whisper-quiet sources!

Smooth and confident in operation

The WA-2MPX graces any control room rack with its alluring visuals hearkening back to the vintage tape machine that inspired it. A model of simplicity, the WA-2MPX’s thick brushed aluminum front panel presents a logical and businesslike control layout with large, grippy knobs symmetrically flanking a pair of warmly lit VU meters. Per-channel, you have preamp gain and output level knobs plus rotary input select switches with mic, line, and instrument settings. Along the bottom are the instrument jacks and a row of switches that engage the previously mentioned functions. In operation, the pots and switches feel silky smooth and inspire confidence. The WA-2MPX is a very professional package, but we would expect nothing less from Warm Audio. At this juncture, we should point out that Warm Audio also makes a single-channel version, the WA-MPX, for those with modest channel-count requirements.

An incredible value you don’t want to pass up

Warm Audio never ceases to delight the audio pros here at Sweetwater. With the WA-2MPX, they’ve done it again by delivering a feature-rich, hand-assembled, boutique-grade tube preamp at an amazingly affordable price. The flexible gain structure gives you broad latitude to push the tubes, dialing in natural harmonic distortion and compression that imbues sources with authentic 15IPS reel-to-reel sound. The WA-2MPX offers mic/line inputs and balanced outputs on XLR and TRS for easy integration into your studio or mobile rig. And its robust metal chassis, stout rackmount faceplate, and discrete handwired internals make it an ideal preamp for front-of-house and location recording. Equipped with a rugged internal power supply and switchable 115/230 voltage, the WA-2MPX is ready for action on any continent your productions take you to. Factor in its surprisingly low price tag, and it all adds up to an incredible value. Supercharge your recordings with the sound of a legend: the Warm Audio WA-2MPX tube preamp.

Reviews

Maybe The Best One Yet
I've got Neve 1073's and dozens of channels of the worlds best mic pre's. I've loved them all. But none of them do what this pre does. You can REALLY shape sound with it. It's going on every song I record going forward. The headroom is like nothing I've ever used. You can create a tenor and a mood with this that no other mic pre on Earth can do. I don't know how this company makes such amazing stuff for so little money!
Believe the HYPE…….this preamp is FIRE!
So after watching a few reviews and demos online I decided to grab one for our studio to test it out for myself. It IS all that and then some, and NO this IS NOT a sponsored post!

The natural tone (all switches OFF) is warm and musical. It gives you depth just by running a mix (or mixing into) it. It can go from 0-100 REALLY quickly so gain stage properly when using it to taste of course. It can be a balancing act in the beginning when gauging how hot you'd want to drive the preamp vs attenuating via the output knob when setting the various color options, but once you find YOUR sweet spot, it's golden! I've run VSTs, vocals, synths, bass and mixes through it and I LOVE every bit of what I get back! The MPX is built like a TANK and has a nice weight to it. A truly beautiful design aesthetically. There's so much more I could say but all I'll add is……..TRY ONE FOR YOURSELF! Work with it for a week under various conditions then make your decision. Bless

Great Preamp
The Warm Audio WA-2MPX is a very versatile preamp that sounds wonderful.I use it in my home studio with my WA 2A and WA EQP WA for vocals, acoustic guitar, bass, and my Hammond organs (XK-5 and SK Pro). The WA-2MPX is easy to use and the tubes make everything sound so natural and warm. After some research on my part, Mac Hatton at Sweetwater helped confirm that this was the preamp I've been looking for. Thank you Mac and Sweetwater.

Bygone era sound no longer bygone
Occasionally I'll see a piece of gear and simply know that I have to have it, regardless of the lack of hype on social media or the bought interest from influencers.

This piece is such a purchase. I immediately decided to run my MPC live 2 through it to see what I could make shake. This was deliberate, I have always found Akai boxes since the 2000 era to rather thin sounding; serviceable but never to be confused with a 60 or a 1200 for example. This preamp allowed me to find tones I thought were impossible in this box.

The "tone" and "tape sat" will never be turned off they just sound so perfect for my boom bap purposes. Having said that, if one endeavored to use this for a cleaner outcome it is entirely possible so a one trick pony it is not.

The highs are sweet and the lows are creamy in the hands of a discerning engineer, the distortion can get obnoxious which could be desirable for the sound designer should one decide to drive it to such heights.

I've had it a day by the time I write this and I'm excited to see what undiscovered sounds I'll happen upon with the multitude of gear that I own. It is an essential piece of my tracking chain going forward.

WA nailed it.
Better than expected
This product was Better than expected and we are currently using it solely for the tape saturation and emulation and we us it on the stereo bus.

SO MUCH BETTER than the plug in from UA, which was no slouch, but this is way more present in a mix as well as sounding more natural and analog.

Our engineers love this and it also works very very well with pop style vocals as well as rock.

You can scream into it, but the Shure SM7B for modern scream vocals is a better tool.

If you run a hip hop or R and B studio the mic pre is hard to beat and the tape emulation just icing on the cake

This is an awesome tool to have in your studio that has multiple functions in one box.
