Tear Through — and Transcend — Synth Space
Contrary to what Virt Iter Legio’s modest 6HP profile might suggest, this module is packed with sonic ferocity and an invigorating scope of sound design possibilities. Packed with three distinctive oscillator algorithms — Bass, SawX, and Harm — to deliver a versatile armature of tone-sculpting capabilities, Noise Engineering’s “army of strong repetitions” (the module’s Latin namesake) masterfully balances aural diversity with just enough control to not get lost in the details. Looking for quadrature modulation with a dash of wavefolding? Bass is where you want to be. What about a supped-up super-saw oscillator? That’s SawX. How about some distortion-driven, additive synthesis inspired by Pura Ruina’s full-wave rectification? You’ll love Harm. Each mode is available via a 3-way selector. The module’s Tang and Flavor controls transform to suit, from two-stage asymmetrical wavefolding to phase modulation and dynamic modification of the relationship between partials within the signal. If that’s not enough textural variety, then you’ll be happy to learn that the opposing 3-way switch supplements your tone with a sonorous, vintage-style chorus, from a little to a whole lot. Pitch, Tang, and Flavor values can be attenuated via CV as well as the CV-only Sync input, which Sweetwater’s synthesists were delighted to learn toggles the module’s hard sync. Did we mention it features independent left- and right-channel phase modulation for some FM-style, harmonic-rich complexity?
