Four Products in One — Your New Digital Assistant

The Blackmagic Design Video Assist is an affordable 4-in-1 monitoring solution that will transform your shooting style and workflow with professional tools! Simply put, the Video Assist is a mountable 7-inch LCD touchscreen that adds comfort and control to your rig. With a larger display than the average camera monitor or viewfinder, Video Assist reduces eye strain from viewfinders, letting you stay attuned to the set environment. Video Assist makes it incredibly easy to frame shots and accurately focus with a number of focus, monitoring, audio recording, and color-correction tools. Plus, Video Assist gives you touchscreen controls over focus zoom, focus peaking, histogram, and frame guides, as well as fully customizable numerous heads-up display options for tracking focus peaking, zebra, LUTs, and more. If you’re looking for a streamlined workflow, or simply want to breathe new life into an old camera, then the Video Assist 7-inch 12G from Sweetwater will punch up your rig in no time!

What's different here?

Blackmagic Design offers both 5- and 7-inch Video Assist models, and this 7-inch 12G HDR version is the cream of the crop! The larger screen makes monitoring comfortable — dare we say luxurious, even? Beyond that, the screen is also brighter than other models, which makes it great for HDR digital film up to 2160p59.94. Extra brightness also makes this model easier to see during bright outdoor shoots. Internally, it’s also a more powerful device with support for pro video formats including Blackmagic RAW. And thanks to this version’s upgraded dual SD card slots and its ability to record directly to any external USB-C flash disk, storage space is never an issue!

Up to 16 channels of audio

Video Assist is a comprehensive AV tool, which means pro audio was hardly an afterthought! The Video Assist 7-inch 12G features a professional audio recorder that’s more robust than the average camera capabilities. When working in SDI formats, you can record two, four, eight, or 16 channels of audio, and the device features two SD card slots for recording. What’s more, this model has two mini-XLR inputs for connecting mics and mixers, as well as onboard phantom power for condenser microphones!

Broadcast-compliant scopes

With four built-in scope options, the Video Assist is a great way to make sure your footage adheres to current broadcast standards. The unit's display offers waveform, vectorscope, RGB, and histogram scope options, all of which can be overlaid on live or recorded video. Paired with the Video Assist’s high-visibility screen, these scopes are a great way to take more control over your footage without the discomfort that comes with constantly referencing detailed specs on a small camera screen. Scopes can be overlaid on an entire live picture or be viewed as a peripheral overlay situated at the top right.

3D LUTs monitor and color correction

With Video Assist, accurate monitoring is easier than ever. Video Assist works with industry standard 17- and 33-point 3D LUT files, and it has multiple built-in 3D LUTs of its own. Built-in 3D LUTs can help you touch up the color display on flat, washed out, or otherwise dull monitors, providing a better idea of how your shots will look after editing is complete. These LUTs can be used as temporary monitor fixes or burned into files when shooting in Blackmagic RAW. What’s more, 3D LUT settings can be saved and applied rapidly, which makes Video Assist an ideal tool for long-term monitor correction.

Reviews

Adds video capture functionality that's missing from many cameras
Virtually unlimited video capture time thanks to a high-performance USB-C storage interface and two channels of balanced mini-XLR audio are a great compliment to the video provided by cameras that are strong in image sensor technology and optics, but missing professional PA-system audio interfaces and higher bit rate video CODECs designed for video editing.

Where video editing is not required, we would have liked to be able to capture directly to H.264 or H.265 for long-term archive.

An Ethernet interface for multi-channel Dante audio input to video capture would be a big improvement for a future version of the product. Two USB-C interface ports would also be better than one.
