Innovative Wind Instrument Captures Tone of Saxophone

The Venova is made from rugged ABS plastic with a unique design that beautifully mimics the tone and playability of a saxophone. With its innovative "branched pipe" tubing design, this innovative, award-winning instrument delivers the conical tone of a true saxophone while its size and feel is very similar to a recorder. This branched pipe design shortens the distance between tone holes, making it possible to play the entire range of notes with fewer keys. This simpler fingering system is akin to a recorder's system, making learning for those who may have never tried a wind instrument much easier.

Easy to clean

Not only is it fun to play, but here at Sweetwater, we love how easy it is to keep the Venova clean. Its ABS resin body means it can be washed with water with no worry about damage. The included mouthpiece, synthetic resin reed, and synthetic pads are also water safe! All of these features make the Venova YVS-100 ideal for beginners and professionals alike.

Reviews

Fun casual instrument
I've recently gotten a Venova so I can do some jazzy lines while on break at work and, generally, practice musicality. It works great for that.

The good:
- Durable, lightweight, portable, cheap. You can take this instrument where you wouldn't dare take others.
- Has a saxophone-like sound. While it won't replace a saxophone, it gives you the idea of a saxophone. For the times and places you'll use this instrument, that's more than enough.
- Recorder fingering, keyed in C. Use recorder sheet music, of which there is plenty of (especially historical), music written for the flute should also play well. Being C, any concert pitch music should work fine, although with only 2 octaves available you'll have to occasionally transpose octaves and such.

The bad:
- Soprano voicing. This is shrill and painful for others and neighbors to hear as you're learning. The alto and tenor versions are much more expensive. For many beginners, soprano can be a big harder to start getting good sound out of, too.
- The included reed is next to useless. Order some reeds along with your Venova. I recommend synthetic reeds to preserve the instant, play-anywhere spirit of the Venova.
- Accidentals have bad intonation. It'll take a lot of practice and experience to get these to sound good. Won't stop you from having fun and it'll make you a better musician (woodwinds don't have as good of intonation as their players tend to think. Venova is worse than average, but with practice that just means you'll get better at playing in tune).

What Do Our In-house Gear Experts Think?
Jeff Figueroa
When I started playing in my school's concert band in 2007, I would have never thought I'd see anything quite like the Yamaha Venova. This truly unique piece of art is the next post-it note and now it can be the next centerpiece of a wind ensemble. With the sounds of a stringy saxophone, this thing brings a whole new tone to the table. As a music producer for the last 5 years, I am excited to see this instrument become the next great thing; as a musician for the last 10+ years, I am so excited to see how the Venova evolves from here on.
