Revolutionizing Studio Recording with Cutting-edge Mic Emulations

The Slate Digital ML-1A elevates the company’s renowned modeling microphone to new heights, offering a comprehensive collection of impeccable mic emulations. This large-diaphragm condenser microphone excels in a wide range of studio applications, from vocals and acoustic instruments to drum kits. It features ultra-low self-noise, ensuring pristine recordings with minimal unwanted artifacts. Additionally, its 3-position Pad switch significantly expands headroom, allowing you to capture sources up to 145dB without distortion. Slate’s updated VMS software enhances the ML-1A’s capabilities with Microphone Model Morphing, a Proximity slider, a Rumble Filter slider, and a mono-to-stereo Width control. The ML-1A comes with over 35 meticulously crafted mic models, including the exceptional Radio France Signature collection, the Classic 87 Expansion Pack, and more — additional mic models are just a software update away, as Slate adds them to the VMS catalogue. With a redesigned grille and housing, the Slate Digital ML-1A empowers you to experiment, refine, and perfect your sounds without compromise.

Slate’s industry-leading modeling mic gets a major-league upgrade

The ML-1A represents a substantial upgrade over its predecessor. For starters, it features an impressive 8dB self-noise rating, allowing you to capture every nuance of sound with minimal unwanted sonic artifacts. The microphone is also equipped with a 3-position Pad switch offering 0dB, -10dB, and -20dB settings, enabling you to tackle whisper-quiet sounds and extremely loud sources — up to 145dB — with equal aplomb. Finally, the ML-1A boasts updated aesthetics, including a sleeker housing, a cool blue color palette, and a redesigned grille.

A world-class virtual mic locker at your fingertips

What would you pay for a locker full of coveted, mint-condition vintage microphones and high-end modern classics? While you’re calculating that, let us introduce you to an enticing alternative: Slate Digital’s VMS Virtual Microphone System. Powered by VMS, the ML-1A equips you with over 35 mic models right out of the gate, including the iconic sounds of the Classic Tubes 3 Expansion pack, with the ability to grow your virtual locker as Slate updates and expands the VMS inventory. You can also add rich saturation and depth to your recordings with selectable virtual preamps, all with real-time control, from tracking to mixdown.

The ML-1A brings several exciting updates to the VMS platform, including Microphone Model Morphing, which allows you to blend the characteristics of two models into unique sonic textures. The updated software also features a Proximity slider for precise control over the mic’s low-frequency response and a Rumble Filter slider to eliminate unwanted low-end noise. Additionally, the mono-to-stereo Width control spreads vocals across the stereo spectrum, creating an engaging contrast with background vocals. Everyone here at Sweetwater is thrilled about the newest features of Slate Digital VMS. Use this stellar system on your next project, and you will be too.

Reviews

The Slate ML1A does its job!

Okay, so I had this mic for a couple of months now, I was very skeptical at first, but I'm glad I got this microphone. Two reasons why: first, the microphone by itself is SOLID for the price, by itself it is an upgrade over condenser mics that are in the typical $ range, sounds very good, low noise, so even before the mic modeling software, it sounds like a $ microphone. Secondly, the mic modeling software makes this microphone soooo versatile, you can choose from many different types of characteristics from many different types of much higher quality microphones. Now I will say they don't sound EXACTLY like anything (it's software after all) but you won't get any closer than this. Now, the features of the software are amazing, I specifically track vocals, I not only add one or two mics (blend), but I apply the 73 style pre, might play with the proximity function, but then they have that width feature, mannn I'm telling you, that width can give your vocals amazing stereo imagery for your mix, it's outstanding!! Overall this is highly recommended if you need one microphone for versatility, and have only one microphone to afford, get this!

Just got the new version ML1A!
I've been using the older ML1 and frankly I thought it sounded great. So I really wasn't even going to upgrade but I decided to take a chance and order the ML1A to see if it was better. First off, the actual microphone is way heavier and also the shockmount seems to be more solid. Secondly the sound quality even before you add any modeling is a massive step up from what I thought was already a great sounding mic. And lastly the new software is amazing. You can blend two models together. So if you like the low end from the ribbon mic and the high end from the Neumann you can just create the perfect blend. So glad I made the jump!
Improved sound and build from the original

I purchased the original ML-1 back when it was bundled with the VMS One preamp. Then I purchased an additional ML-1 to use as drum overheads. Since then, I've used the ML-2 and the other modeling mics from other major manufacturers. I have extensive experience with some of the original mics that this models, and I can tell you that the ML-1A does offer a smoother top end and the difference from model to model is more apparent. The noise floor improvement wasn't a huge determining factor in purchasing this since I had no issues with the ML-1 in that regard. There's been some controversy around the licensing and software decisions surrounding this mic, but since I'm a yearly subscriber already, it doesn't make a difference to me. I saw that this mic uses a different capsule, so maybe that's why I prefer the sound of it.

If you find the ML-1 to be a little harsh, give this a try. If you're between getting an ML-1 or an ML-1A, I think this is worth the additional cost, especially when it's on sale for $.

If you already have an ML-1, go make music and stop obsessing over gear like me.

Software
The microphone is fine but the Lok Liscensing preocess for
their software is so incredibly confusing. It was so hard to install
with so many hoops and diversions and then finally it has never worked within
Logic for me.The emulator is not worth it. The mic is
perfectly fine though.
