An All-encompassing V-Guitar Processor for the Modern Musician

Fueled by cutting-edge V-Guitar technology, the BOSS VG-800 V-Guitar processor comprehensively transforms your guitar or bass signal with the click of a switch. This powerhouse processor pairs with the BOSS Serial GK divided pickup system, putting ultra-realistic modeling of myriad acoustic and electric instruments at your command. From 12-string acoustic guitars to synthesizer sounds to pickup-specific emulations (humbucker, single-coil, and so on), the VG-800 unlocks a nearly limitless library of sounds to explore. Even more impressively, the VG-800’s Dual Bass/Guitar modes and comprehensive creation tools allow you to craft simultaneous instrument pairings across the strings. As if that wasn’t enough, this pedal also comes complete with a host of professional-grade amp models and effects built right in. You can even connect the VG-800 to your DAW of choice to enjoy its multichannel USB audio interface capabilities. And while the VG-800’s intuitive workflow and control layout make it a breeze to craft even the most complex sounds, the BOSS Tone Studio and Tone Exchange offer expanded editing capabilities and access to a vast library of user-generated presets.

Note: The BOSS VG-800 V-Guitar processor requires your instrument to have a Serial GK divided pickup to function. Contact your Sweetwater Sales Engineer for further details.

Explore an expansive library of acoustic and electric models

It’s tough to overstate the VG-800’s vast collection of modeled sounds. Naturally, you get all the usual suspects that performing guitarists and bassists would require, including multiple electric guitars/pickups, electric basses, acoustic guitars, and even less common instruments like sitars, banjos, and more. Moreover, the VG-800 augments these instruments with a robust range of synth textures — including an immaculate emulation of Roland’s early-1980s GR-300 — and VIO modeling. Finally, the VG-800 can even be utilized as a hub for a more expansive Serial GK system, giving you the option to drive a GM-800 guitar synth or even a secondary VG-800 from the pedal’s Serial GK output.

Multi-instrument presets and Dual Guitar/Bass modes

Once you’ve had your fill of the VG-800’s extensive library of spot-on instrument models, this pedal’s deep customization tools and Dual Guitar/Bass modes open an entirely new arena of multi-instrument options to explore. These tools allow you to assign different instruments, tunings, and even parameters like pickup models to individual strings.

Need to cover rhythm and lead duties simultaneously? Assign a 12-string guitar to your guitar’s top three strings, then outfit the lower strings with a hard-rocking humbucker tone. Tackling a solo jazz gig? The VG-800 gives you the power to dish out walking bass lines on the bottom two strings, while the top four strings cover melodic duty with a lush, warm hollowbody guitar preset. With this nearly limitless range of versatility in mind, it’s no surprise that the VG-800 is a favorite of Sweetwater’s solo performers.

Expressive and dynamic options

The VG-800 sports a robust assortment of controls aimed at in-the-moment expression, not least of which is the pedal’s individual string bend function. Plug in an expression pedal, and this feature allows you to perform soaring pedal steel and B-bender effects. Plus, the VG-800’s harmony function converts single notes and chords into an enveloping ensemble of sound.

Reviews

Powerful and compact
Here my thoughts six months into the VG-800. Cutting to the chase: the VG-800 is a powerful, compact, and great sounding tool, and has replaced a Boss GT-1000CORE as the centerpiece of my guitar rig.

The VG-800 combines two types of devices: (1 - "normal guitar signal path") a multi-effect unit and amp/speaker simulator, and (2 - "instrument signal path") a guitar modeling processor only accessible via a hex pickup (not included). The hex pickup signal uses a special "serial GK" protocol over a heavily shielded twisted pair cable with TRS ends - also used by the Boss GM-800 guitar synth. The modeling features in the GK Serial signal path are largely inherited from earlier Boss/Roland GK devices (GP-10, SY-1000), incrementally improved here - no latency, and significantly reduced artifacts except when pitch shifting more than a few steps. It's not a turn-key solution, but it rewards experimentation and can be adapted to a large number of scenarios: recording (via USB audio and re-amping), stand alone (my preference), or integrated with one or more amps and external pedals.

I started out using just the normal guitar signal path with an electric guitar via the VG-800's normal guitar jack. I treated it as a reduced GT-1000CORE, as it retains Boss's multi-effects architecture with ports for external switches and expression pedals, a full featured MIDI implementation, and the deep and powerful assigns section. The VG-800 loses some of the GT's features. It has only one path splitter-mixer pair and one DIST block (DIST is not offered in the three FX blocks). I miss the XCOMP and Bass Comp (which sounds great on guitar), but the limiter in the FX blocks makes up for it. While the VG-800 normal path has forced me to do more with less, it more than holds its own stepping in for the GT-1000.

On the GK pickup signal path, my favorite electric guitar models are the bright humbucker, ES-335, Tele, P-90, and Rickenbacker. The strat models are good too, but I don't use them since my GK pickup is already mounted on a strat. I like having the modeled guitar for on-demand 12-string, alternative tunings (great for slide!), and string bends with an assigned expression pedal.

The VG-800 steel string acoustic guitar models are useful, if limited. The models and voicings seem mired in the 1960s, missing an OM, Parlor, or auditorium style guitar. I've gotten a satisfactory acoustic guitar tone by blending dual guitar models, with EQ and light compression. It better than an undersaddle piezo, but that's a low bar. I find it best for basic strumming, preferably with the 12 string emulation. The models sound better on a fixed bridge guitar than on my strat - perhaps due to string dampening by the floating bridge.

I haven't spent much time with the other models - banjo, resonator, sitar, nylon string, a couple of basic guitar synths.

The Boss Tone Studio computer app for the VG-800 is useable, if frustratingly slow and a bit buggy: notably the assigns display regularly shows incorrect settings, and the MIDI CC transmit section is a mess. BTS sometimes locks up when I'm concurrently using an external MIDI controller to configure and test the MIDI assigns. That said, it is still useful when it's working.

The Boss GK-Serial multi-channel signal transport protocol enables linking the VG-800 with the GM-800 guitar synth via a single GK-Serial cable, so I've put together a small-stage friendly system with just my VG-800 and MIDI controller at my feet and the GM-800 tucked offstage.

My biggest frustration with the VG-800 is not the unit itself, but the very limited configurations Boss offer for their GK-Serial pickups. The external GK-5 pickup has no input for the normal signal, no GK switches, and no GK volume control. The internal GK5 kit has these features, but is packaged in a rectangular chassis that demands serious physical modifications to any host guitar. GK pickups themselves are ill-suited to Tele style bridges, and the external GK-5 kit would be an ugly install for an ES-335. There are no USA made or distributed guitars with a built-in GK5, so I'm back to my trusty old MiM Fender Roland Ready Strat (GK-2A hex pickup and 13 pin jacks) through a Boss GKC-AD converter box.

Overall, the VG-800 is a winner. I hope Boss addresses some of the issues mentioned here and partners with builders to offer GK-5 equipped guitars in the USA. I'll add another star when Boss addresses the issues.
Amazing Device
The VG800 has many useful features, and some are less known. For starters, you can plug a normal guitar with normal pickups into this device and have access to all the amp models and effects that are in the unit. The patches or presets in this device are called memories, and that can be a bit confusing. But you can have up to 150 memories stored on the unit. There are around 60 or so factory memories and if you do a system restore you get all the factory memories back. There are more memories available to download and add to your library via the Tone Studio software.

The guitar models are excellent, and I like them better than the Line 6 Variax models. In addition to that, there are some classic Roland synth sounds in here that are fun to play around with as well. But in order to have access to all of that you will need to have a GK pickup of some kind. I have guitars that have GK3, GK2A, GK5, and a GK 5 Kit pickup. All of them work great. There are no latency issues with any of those pickups when using this unit.

I have designed memories (presets) that can be used with my regular electric guitars, acoustic guitars, and bass guitars. The GK800 has all the amps that can be found on the Boss GT-1000. However, it does not have all the effects found on the GT-1000. When it comes to effects and routing options the GT-1000 has better features. I also own a GT-1000 and I have created memories on the VG800 that are strictly guitar models so I can run them through the GT-1000. That way, I can get the best of both worlds.

Another great feature that is not talked about with the VG800 is the ability to use it as a MIDI controller. So it plugs into your computer, and you can use it to control software synths. You can also use it as a midi controller in your DAW. I don't detect any latency when I do this and it works well. This means I can record that piano part by using the VG800 and a guitar with a GK pickup.

The downside is the Tone Studio software can be buggy, and it has several issues. It does not work well with Windows 11. It works better with Windows 10. You can still program and load memories into your VG800, but the software makes it frustrating. The manuals are not much help. Some information I wanted to know was left out. YouTube will be your best friend. There are many YouTube videos that will walk you through getting this thing setup and going. Aside from that, the VG800 is rugged and durable. It is a great piece of hardware. I would recommend it. I love my VG800
