Extremely Portable Acoustic-electric Bass

The Kala U-Bass Scout is another short-scale acoustic-electric bass in their popular U-Bass line that delivers incredible tone, playability, and design. The Scout features a mahogany top, back, and sides for rich, full low-end bass tone. The mahogany neck with laurel fingerboard provides stellar response and feel, and the smooth, deep Venetian cutaway gives you great access down the neck. In addition, a satin finish lets the natural mahogany really shine, and cream binding ties in nicely with the color of this fine instrument for some great stage presentation. The U-Bass Scout also fits easily into overhead compartments on planes, trains, or the back seat of your car — a feature bassists here at Sweetwater really love.

The right tonewoods bring out this U-Bass's warm and woody sound

As an acoustic instrument, another major factor in the U-Bass Scout's tone is the selection of tonewoods. This U-Bass gives you the characteristically full-bodied sound of mahogany construction. Plus, it looks simply amazing! Add to that a laurel fingerboard and laurel bridge, and you get a dark warmth that blossoms with every note.

Special strings, special sound

The secret behind the big sound of the Kala U-Bass is almost as cool as its small, ultra-portable format. It comes from the combination of the right tonewoods and Aquila's Thunderblack polyurethane strings. These lightweight, large-diameter strings provide plenty of low-frequency oomph, which resonates with a deep, rich, and wooden quality that's reminiscent of the coveted upright sound yet colored with a uniquely musical U-Bass quality all its own.

Custom Kala electronics with active EQ make this U-Bass a real live performer

Introduced on the 2013 edition of the U-Bass, Kala's custom piezo electronics give this U-Bass a vibrant and realistic sound when you play plugged in. An active equalizer lets you tweak your tone, effortlessly meeting the needs of even the most demanding venues. What's more, Kala's UK-500B electronics even equip this U-Bass with an onboard tuner — an essential part of any musician's live kit.

Kala U-Bass Scout Acoustic-electric Bass Guitar Features:

  • Massive-sounding acoustic-electric bass guitar you can take anywhere
  • Compact 20.875-inch-scale, 16-fret fingerboard
  • Mahogany construction for full-bodied warmth with an incredibly deep fundamental
  • Aquila Thunderblack strings for a tone that's reminiscent of an upright bass
  • Separately compensated saddles for each string and die-cast tuners
  • Onboard piezo pickup with active equalizer for exceptional sound in any live environment

Reviews

Kala U-Bass Scout, Mahogany Acoustic-Electric Bass Guitar - Natural Satin
I've wanted one of these for the last 5 years and finally got it. It took me that long to save enough money from playing gigs to afford it. (Just kidding!) My wife got it for me as a 70th birthday present. It's fun to play and sounds great. I've played it now in a bluegrass setting and at a jam session playing some Tom Scott and the L.A. Express music and straight-ahead jazz tunes. I see myself playing this in Celtic, bluegrass, and acoustic settings. The only thing is that there is some fret sprout and the frets need to be dressed up a bit. Other than that. Wow!

Highly recommend this instrument, the sound is amazing for a small base
Great Product
this is a great product. It fit my needs with the size and portability and quality.
thank you!

Love It
This bass is a blast to play after you get used to it. I have used it live and it absolutely booms! The only thing is, it is listed as coming with a softshell case. This implies some rigidity, however it comes with the pictured gig bag which offers almost no protection. Still love the instrument though.

New bass experience!
I asked my son to help me pick a bass, and he suggested a short scale since my fingers are short and so is my experience with anything besides piano and guitar. I've played bass a little and actually did try a regular short scale that looked like a junior bass guitar, but he found this and said I should give it a try. He demoed it for me and was all over the thing--of course, he's a guitar person, so it was to be expected! But I was surprised at how easy it was to play, especially for a piano person.
I love the strings and the fret size--totally different--takes a little getting used to, to lean toward the back fret for better intonation--and the fact that it's a hollow body, which means I can practice without hauling out the amp! It's about the size of a bass ukulele, but I don't know how the different ukes are tuned; this is like a regular bass.
What is disconcerting is what a big, deep bass sound comes from this sized instrument. And when it's plugged in, it's got the same full sound as any bass in our band. It's not for a solo bass player who likes to travel all up and down the neck, but 7 frets is about my limit anyway--more than enough for me. And at this great price, it was worth taking it home to find out if I'll like it. So far, so good!
