Seismic Synth Sonics: Analog Panache and Desktop Versatility

Behringer’s dedication to both preserving and reimagining the iconic synths of history led to the development of the UB-Xa. Now, with the Behringer UB-Xa D, the synth lauded for being equal parts musically menacing and malleable has broken its keybed shackles to expand your studio and stage palettes. Like its sized-up sibling, this pint-sized powerhouse utilizes 32 analog oscillators to power its immense sonic scope. The potentate of polyphonic possibilities delivers the full spread of iconic 1980s-style lightning leads, booming brass, and plush pads, supplemented by a detailed suite of playstyle pliability, including velocity sensitivity, MPE (MIDI Polyphonic Expression), and a slew of expressive capabilities. Sweetwater’s synth aficionados are supremely impressed with its dual-layer mode, allowing you to conjure two distinct patches across its 16 voices for massive, simultaneous sounds, allowing for complex tone crafting that can be painlessly saved and recalled with 512 onboard preset slots. Dual LFOs, dedicated VCA and VCF envelopes, pulse-width modulation, and flexible per-oscillator modulation controls are complemented by a switchable, versatile VCF, which boasts 2- and 4-pole filter modes. Connectivity is king, and the UB-Xa D desktop synth pulls no punches. MIDI is available over class-compliant USB 2.0 Type B, as well as 16-channel 5-pin DIN in, out, and thru ports, while foot pedals and foot switches span five individual 1/4-inch TRS jacks: Vibrato, Filter, Sustain, Program Advance, and Hold. Oozing with’80ss panache, the Behringer UB-Xa D desktop synth faithfully delivers an uncompromising suite of vintage-fueled sonics that succeeds in supplementing them with modern musical appointments to give you the best of the past and the future of sound. With included rackmount brackets, eight selectable vintage modes, and an 8-channel modulation matrix, the only limit to your sound is your imagination.

Reviews

Amazing synth worth every Penny!
I seriously can't believe they did it, I have been waiting on the Desktop since I don't have room for the Keyboard version, it sounds incredible with 16 analog voices!
Just buy one and listen for yourself, at this price point, there is nothing like it. 10/10 Behringer knocks it out of the park.
16 Voices in a compact form
Purchased the UBXA full keyboard. Love it but as Patchdog says in the video... It does weigh 26 pounds. If you love the UBXA.. You will love this desktop version. I have both amd cant part with either.
Hot take: This is an Oberheim Xpander and Yamaha CS-80 rolled into one
The UB-Xa is a phenomenal sounding synth, and I would argue it's the best analog synth on the market today. What I love: 16 voices, bitimbral, huge mod matrix. And all of these in stereo makes it sound huge.

CS-80 is renowned for being bitimbral with the ability to play two 8 voice patches simultaneously with poly aftertouch. The UB-Xa is bi-timbral with 16 voices, so you can play two independent 8 voice Oberheim-style synths simultaneously. The keyboard version has polyphonic aftertouch.
Xpander is renowned for its extensive modulation capabilities with 27 sources and 47 destinations (via software). The UB-Xa has a deep mod matrix with 42 sources and 33 destinations. Admittedly, the UB-Xa has fewer layers, LFOs and envelopes, but it also has poly AT and MPE capability among other modern touches.

Pros
- The mod matrix! It's huge and powerful and nobody talks about it!
- I often find by adding release with 16 voices, I don't even need to add reverb to some patches to get a reverb sound.
- Despite getting warm and having 16 voices, tuning is stable and the tuning procedure takes ~20 seconds. I actually like to hear the tuning drift a bit over time - it's musical and harkens to its vintage inspiration.
- Have you ever stacked 32 oscillators in unison?

Cons
- It remains loyal to the original OB-Xa interface, which is clunky. Cramming it into a desktop module makes it somewhat disorganized. Coming from the intuitive Take5 interface, I was very disappointed initially.
- Almost every button has a hidden function if you hold it or press shift, so it's a bit tough to learn. On the plus side, the synth is far deeper than it appears.
- The knobs are very sensitive. This means you have develop a light touch which is actually a good thing.
- There are menus everywhere: an arp menu, a sequencer menu, a voice menu, a global menu, etc. I still don't know exactly how to exit a menu when I'm in shift latch mode.
- It has a fan, but in my experience it has only turned on once during a hot summer day.

Verdict: If you love hardware synths, you have to experience this massively deep analog synth.
Very Cool
If I squint just a little, it's an Xpander. Really.
Music background: Ambient
For a synth guy from the eighties, it's a must have
I ordered the Behringer UB-Xa desktop a while back now. Of course Behringer had a long lead time, but it was worth the wait. It was a few to several months when since I requested my name be put of the waiting list. Once it came into Sweetwater it was delivered quickly. However I was out on travel when it arrived. So more than a week went by before I had the chance to open the box and plug it in. WOW ! On the first couple notes and chords I realized the wait wasn't long at all, relative to waiting over 20 years when I had an original OB-Xa and sold it back then, ....the UB-Xa is spot on. It hits the same way, same musical goosebumbs as the original. I've spent a several hours in all playing the new Oberhiem OB-X8, SC's Teo-5, and while those have that Oberhiem sound and the OB-X8 seems so close to what I remember, but still something was missing. It didn't inspire the same way. I thought my ears had changed over the years. But in those first few moments after turning the UB-Xa on I realized it's not dulled ears or changed perceptions, it's the synth man. The UB-Xa invokes the same response for almost every patch as my OB-Xa did. The other don't quite get there, they don't invome that same musical inspiration or emotions as the UB-Xa does. Needless to say I'm very happy with my decision. Behringer has to be given a ton of credit. The work they've done to bring back the best of the classics, the synths and the sounds that shaped our perceptions and memories of the world, are alive once again. Thanks to Behringer, the affordability and astounding accuracy. Behringer clearly has proven several times now, and more than ever with the UB-Xa that they know how to recreate the "magic" of these synths.
