Clean Up Your Studio’s Low End

Gaining control of low-end frequencies is one of the most important things you need to consider when building a studio. Failure to do so is a surefire path to inaccurate monitoring and, consequently, subpar mixes. Made from high-density glass wool, Primacoustic’s Cumulus offers an easy, cost-effective solution to that age-old problem. This tri-corner bass trap captures low-frequency sound as it migrates to the corners of your room, effectively attenuating frequencies 100Hz and up. Its unobtrusive design looks great in any room, and thanks to its Class A/1 fire rating, it’s safe to use anywhere. To top it off, Cumulus bass traps are a breeze to install, by virtue of their unique spring-tensioned clamping system. If your mixes aren’t translating, you need to clean up your acoustic environment. Primacoustic’s Cumulus is a great place to start.

Effective low-frequency management that fits in any room

Studio designers have long been aware that treating the corners (also known as tri-corners) of a room is vital to creating an acoustically sound space. This is because walls and ceilings act as waveguides, enabling sound — most notably, low-frequency content — to gather there. Unfortunately, this is the area that most studios fail to treat adequately. After all, mounting full-size acoustic panels in corners is easier said than done. Cumulus bass traps solve this problem. These 24-inch panels snap effortlessly into position using an easy-to-install spring-tensioned clamping system, and they only extend down 17 inches after installation. Composed of high-density 6-pound-per-cubic-foot glass wool, these bass traps yield broadband absorption down to 100Hz. At Sweetwater, we’ve found that this effectively mitigates low-mid boominess, including standing waves and the 200Hz–300Hz chest thump that plagues many vocal booths.

Primacoustic Cumulus Tri-corner Bass Trap Features:

  • High-density 6-pound-per-cubic-foot glass wool construction

  • Class A/1 fire rating makes it safe to install anywhere
  • 24-inch panel fits into corners where full-size bass traps won’t

  • Unobtrusive design looks great with any décor

Reviews

Follow up review
The only other review here is mine...but since I wrote that, I've had more time with them, and also bought more of them to treat another room that my studio just expanded into.

A couple of minor updates, including a minor complaint that I missed in my first review...

Yep - they still stink. 24 hours airing out in the garage did the trick though.
Corner damage - less obvious this time, although a couple of the corners did have very minor damage. once its on the ceiling, no one will notice.
Sound? I do believe these are working quite well, and when placed into a new room with minimal treatment their impact seems more obvious to me.

Here is the one small complaint I forgot to mention in my first review.... the brackets that hold the tri-corners in place have white tips, which stick out like a sore thumb against the black fabric. I bought these (in part) because I wanted a super clean install, and this kind of ruins it. On the first set that I bought, I actually colored all of the bracket tips black before hanging them. In the right light you can see them, but for the most part, it did the trick and looks really clean. This time I just decided to leave it as is and yeah.... it definitely takes away from the clean look (see photo example).

Overall though, these are interesting and fairly effective when used appropriately as part of a broader room treatment.

Interesting solution
My main studio room is pretty well treated, mostly with acoustic panels that I built myself, so it's honestly hard to say how effective they are without formal measurements, but I installed some of these and my impression is that they are having a small, but positive, impact. In a small room like mine, these also look great. It's an interesting, low-profile solution. The system to hang them is both genius and strange - but it works very well and installation was quick, very easy, and only required one small hole in the ceiling.

I do have 3 small criticisms. first, despite being well packed, multiple corners were slightly banged up upon arrival. It's very minor so I just kept them, but based on what I see - this is likely a common problem, due to how the products are built more so than the packing. second - you have to keep in mind that you are paying for the RESULTS not the materials, but I do feel that these types of products are typically a bit overpriced. For square or rectangular panels, I'd build my own but for a niche product like this, I do think the convenience is worth the cost. third - this product STINKS. Literally. When you take it out of the plastic be prepared to run for fresh air. This isn't unusual, it's common with lots of products, but just giving you a heads up. I let mine air out in my garage for about 1 day and after that 95% of the smell was gone.
