The Incredible Little Travel Sax 2

The Odisei Music Travel Sax 2 takes the concept of the travel saxophone to the next level. It comes with a real alto sax mouthpiece and adapters for your own soprano, tenor, or baritone mouthpiece. It has a speaker and a headphone jack, in addition to internal synth sounds for instant go-anywhere practice. There’s also a companion app that gives you access to additional features, such as breath sensor MIDI channel assignment. But its main calling card is its authentic saxophone key layout and stainless steel spring action, which gives you the feel of the real thing. Factor in its exceedingly small size and light weight (under a pound), and the Travel Sax 2 checks all the boxes for a practice instrument you can play anywhere without disturbing others.

Self-contained wind synth and MIDI controller

For onboard sounds, the Travel Sax 2 gives you a basic MIDI soundset, which is a fair tradeoff for being able to play anywhere with a self-contained instrument. But you can also use it as a wind controller in the studio, using its USB/MIDI output to connect to your favorite DAW and lay down tracks with premium software sounds. Another useful feature is Bluetooth audio streaming, which lets you practice along with your favorite tunes and hear it all through the built-in speaker or headphones. There’s also an aux-in jack so you can plug in analog signals. At Sweetwater, we’ve been hands-on with several electronic wind instruments, and we’re impressed with how the Travel Sax 2 uniquely combines all the attributes sax players deem essential in such a compact package. If you’re in the market for such an instrument, we heartily suggest you check out the Odisei Music Travel Sax 2!

Reviews

Best choice for sax payers looking for an electronic wind instrument
I have been following and waited a few years of its development to finally get the Travel Sax 2 and it definitely was worth the wait! I've had it for more than a month now and find it worth purchasing, given the somewhat (but still reasonable) steep price. I own and play several soprano, alto, C melody, and tenor saxophones and a couple of flutes and for me, the main limitations of these acoustic instruments are portability when traveling, and the limited ability to practice everywhere because of they are inherently loud.
The Travel Sax 2 addresses both limitations ( very portable and ability to play silently using earbuds or headphones) plus the added advantage of using it as a midi controller or connecting the headphone output to a wired or wireless ( guitar wireless system) speaker.

The instrument is very light and deceptively looks flimsy but it definitely is not- it is surprisingly well built and engineered. The included adapters and optional accessories make it very ergonomic and easily to play, mimicking the real instruments. A dummy alto mouthpiece with ligature and reed is even included. Although not ideal in maintaining one's embouchure it still allows one to play as close to the actual acoustic saxophone set up as there is some semblance of breath control and tonguing. It works best with a synthetic 3.5 reed and a Rovner ligature for me. The built in saxophone sounds are good enough for practicing but I purchased the SWAM sax bundle for iOS which works very well with mu M5 iPad PRO which could potentially allow me to actually use the TS2 for performance.

I constructed a prototype cradle to hold and secure the TS2 from a cardboard shoe mold, duct tape and soft cloth material mounted on a portable camera tripod which works perfectly ( I plan to make a moulded plastic model from this). Now it sits next to me to grab and play anytime to nail those difficult musical passages and practice scales.

Hunter Myers my rep from Sweetwater as always was very helpful with this purchase! Highly recommended!

What I was looking for!
The Travel Sax 2 is great. My wife and I travel a lot, which means being away from my saxophone and not practicing. The Travel Sax 2 works as advertised. I also purchased the accessory kit that extends the neck and has a more useful (in my opinion) mouthpiece. This sax is light, compact easy to pack. It's quiet and will play along with a backing tracks on my iPhone or iPad and all of it through headphones attached to the sax. You don't work on your embouchure, but fingering technique, tempo, playing loud or soft (how hard you blow) all works extremely well. I'm very happy with this. As a side benefit, when my embouchure tires when practicing with my full size sax I can switch to the Travel Sax 2 and keep working on technique.
Perfect for practicing, not for performance
I have tried and own many of the electronic saxes that have come out over the years, so have a lot to compare against. This is by far the best for exactly what it was designed for - providing a very portable instrument that allows very effective silent practice that benefits your playing of a real saxophone.

Pros:
- it authentically mimics the key positions and feel of a real saxophone, feeling immediately comfortable rather than foreign like many other electronic saxes
- extremely light weight and small for easy travel and packing, without feeling at all too small. Your hands are closer together, but your finger spacing and the distance to the side and palm keys feels like a real sax.
- pairs with a phone to allow any any music from your phone apps to be mixed in with your playing (through the built-in speaker or headphones plugged into the instrument)
- normal saxophone fingerings, and easy to add your own (e.g.- I added the flute F# fingering option with the D key, and made the D key also work with B to give a Bb like most saxes do in addition to the F and E keys)
- simple setup. I appreciate the limited options. I want a simple practice instrument, not a million features that take forever to get right.
- great fast key response - can play fast runs, turnarounds and so forth. This uses optical sensors rather than mechanical buttons, so no delay due to debouncing a mechanical switch, and no need to keep your fingers off the keys when not pressing them like a touch sensitive device.
- wonderful protective case with plenty of room for accessories (extension tubes, neck strap to help stabilize it, wired earbuds)

Cons that are really pros:
- limited sounds, and not performance level quality. But I'm ok with that. I'll probably stick with one or two sounds (e.g.- tenor and alto to train my ear for the Bb and Eb horns).
- no extended octaves, just the normal two plus altissimo of a real horn
- no bite control for pitch bends and so forth. But I'm ok with this too. I can focus on learning licks, patterns, arpeggios, chord changes to tunes, etc. and leave embouchure work for when I have a real horn.
- slow response when used as a MIDI controller through Bluetooth, so not suitable for performance. But again, that is not why I bought it. The response from the keys to the built-in sounds is great!

Cons:
- the built in speaker is not very good. You really want to use earbuds when possible.
Great practice tool
It's a great purchase if you've been considering it. Despite being made of plastic, it feels comfortable to hold and doesn't fatigue your hands. It encourages practice in comfortable places without disturbing others. The onboard speaker allows you to play backing tracks, including songs and YouTube videos, from your phone. I'm very satisfied with my purchase.
I LOVE my Travel Sax 2. It's improved my technique, my ear, my improvising -- and it's doubled the amount of time available to practice.
I LOVE my Travel Sax 2. In the 3 months I've had it, it's improved my technique, my ear, my improvising, and it's doubled the amount of time available for me topractice.

I play sax in a Motown band and a rock band, but with 3 young daughters and a light-sleeping wife, I don't get enough time to practice. My practicing either interrupts their homework, or it wakes my wife up. Not any more. My travel sax lets me work on parts to new songs, lets me improvise, and it even lets me practice scales and tricky key combinations without interrupting anyone. I also take it with me when I need to pick them up from school, so I can practice while I wait for them.

I use the built-in speaker in the sax and play it on the quietest mode. To give you an idea of how well it works, sometimes my wife will watch TV and I will join her and play along with the background music to the TV programs. I can hear myself, she can't, and it improves both my listening skills (like interval training) and improvising abilities. You can also plug your ear buds into the Travel Sax 2, but I've only done that a couple times. You can also use blue tooth, but I've never had a need to do it.

You'll still want to work on your long tones and your overtones on your real horns, but this has been a great game changer for all of my other saxophone skills. I use my with one of my tenor mouthpieces so I can hold my embouchure as I play. Plus, it's super fun to play.

It almost seems like it was designed by Apple. Everything works smoothly, it looks amazing (I bought the one with white keys), and even the packaging and the carrying case are brilliantly designed. It's like the iPhone of saxophones.

For a couple days I thought I lost mine. I didn't think twice about almost buying a second one because I think It is so wonderful.
