Outboard ’60s Spring Reverb for Your Pedalboard

Are you looking for the ultimate surf rock reverb pedal? Get ready to hang ten. Catalinbread's Topanga Burnside has captured all the authentic sounds of those groundbreaking ’60s Tolex-covered outboard tanks — the flutter, the cluck and clang, the drippy splash — in a sweet-looking pedal with old-school Mix, Tone, and Dwell controls. But that's not all: you also get a Volume knob that controls a discrete preamp, for the option of an extra clean boost when you want it. The Topanga Burnside also has a handy tremolo mod and can be powered by any 9–18-volt center-negative DC power supply (not included) that provides at least 100mA. It also features a tough all-metal chassis and a rugged footswitch that are ready for the road.

100% wet capability, volume knob magic, and reverb-specific controls

The outboard spring reverb units of the ’60s always had a little bit of the dry signal mixed in, but Catalinbread decided to give your Mix knob extra functionality. You can set it anywhere from 100% dry to 100% wet to find the perfect spot for the vibe you want to express — vintage units didn't offer this level of control. There's also a discrete preamp adjustable via the Volume knob that gives you a generous amount of clean boost when desired. Tone control for the reverb can be set anywhere from full brightness to dark, warm Southern California depths. And the Dwell knob controls how hard the springs are being driven, so you can dial in anything from a subtle hollow sound to an intense, big-canyon reverb worthy of the name Topanga!

Catalinbread: gear that makes you want to play

The self-avowed gearheads at Catalinbread focus on making musical devices that they want to use themselves: "gear that gets us excited and inspires us to play." The result of that authentic focus and unwavering integrity is the type of innovation that isn't market-driven; Catalinbread creates its own market for products players love, whether overdrive, delay/reverb, fuzz/distortion, or tremolo/modulation pedals (many of which are available at Sweetwater). The Topanga Burnside is a powerful example of Catalinbread's commitment to exciting, inspiring innovation.

Catalinbread Topanga Burnside Features:

  • Full-on surf rock spring reverb unit in pedal form with Mix, Tone, Dwell, and Volume controls
  • Authentic old-school sound, including all the drip, clang, flutter, and splash of 1960s tanks

  • Handy tremolo mod conjures additional surfy goodness

Reviews

My all-time favorite Spring reverb pedal!
As you're probably aware, there are alot of high-end Spring reverb pedals out there. Some use a real spring, others use an actual tube. The Topanga Burnside is a unique Spring reverb pedal, it dares to take a different path, stand out some.

How does it differ?

As you can see in my demo video attached to this review, this particular pedal has 3 main things that make it worth considering:

The Boost circuit:
Like it or not, this reverb pedal has a volume pedal and can be used to add some classic sounding overdrive to your guitar's clean signal. The question is why? The answer is to give you that surf tone we all know and love from Wipeout.

The Pre-Amp:
Although there are no given specifics, Catalibread says theyve included a pre-amp. The pre-amp rounds out and sweetens your base tone, I imagine ur would be something similar to a fixed version of the EP-3 boost preamp.

The Tube-emulated vibra
The Vibrato is placed after the reverb so it doesn't annoyingly cut off when you stop striking the chord. Instead, there's a natural flow to things and the tremolo almost functions like a delay in that way.

A controlled Spring reverb sound:
The Spring reverb sound on this pedal is very beautiful and it's not overly extreme with the shaking spring rattle. If you want that type of sound, you probably want to look elsewhere.

The warm sound of the tremolo following the realistically modelled spring reverb sprinkled with the pre-amp and option to boost the signal are what made this my top go-to Spring reverb pedal.

Good stuff!
Music background: Praise and Worship, Shoegaze
From subtle to not-so-much; a fantastic pedal
I'm using this with a five-watt tube amp with no tone controls or master volume. This pedal adds the color, sweet reverb and touch of tremolo I wanted. Siomple layout but lots of options if you want to go further out. Absolutely love it!
Music background: Gretsch Falcon, Gretsch G5222 modded 5-watt amp.
The Surf Tone you're looking for with a great vintage Tremolo vibe too!
The Surf Tone you're looking for with a great vintage Tremolo vibe too!

Watched a lot of videos online, and this was the clear winner. Works much better in the drive chain than the effects loop, but it sounds amazing and it was exactly what I was looking for! Great Surf tones when I need them, and great, subtle, spring tones when that's what I need. The "Volume" Knob works great for gnarly wet overdrive sounds too.

10/10

Instant Surf - cowabunga dude!
Short of a time machine to 1963 this is a close as you can get to the original surf sounds. I play a Vintera Start and Jaguar into a Champ 40, but skip all the modeling options on the amp and only use this pedal - it really captures the surf sound !
Music background: Performing amateur, ukulele, guitar, banjo.
Topanga drip + tremolo
This pedal makes it sound like you're playing under a very large overpass bridge (reverb) and the ground is entirely made of contoured concrete (tremolo).

Has all the drip of the OG Topanga (which I sold to buy this) plus a Tremolo (knob controls RATE, DEPTH is fixed).

I personally like it wet (turn up DWELL) with just a little trem.
