Outboard '60s Spring Reverb for Your Pedalboard

If you're looking for the ultimate surf rock reverb pedal, you've found it. Catalinbread has captured all the authentic sounds of those groundbreaking '60s tolex-covered outboard tanks — the flutter, the cluck and clang, the drippy splash — in a sweet-looking pedal with old-school Mix, Tone, and Dwell controls. But that's not all: you also get a Volume knob that controls a discrete preamp, for the option of an extra clean boost when you want it. The Topanga can be powered by any 9–18-volt center-negative DC power supply (not included) that provides at least 100mA. It also features a tough all-metal chassis and a rugged footswitch that are ready for the road.

100% wet capability, volume knob magic, and reverb-specific controls

The outboard spring reverb units of the '60s always had a little bit of the dry signal mixed in, but Catalinbread decided to give your Mix knob extra functionality. You can set it anywhere from 100% dry to 100% wet to find the perfect spot for the vibe you want to express — vintage units didn't offer this level of control. There's also a discrete preamp adjustable by the Volume knob, giving you a generous amount of clean boost when desired. Tone control for the reverb only can be set anywhere from full brightness to dark, warm Southern California depths. And the Dwell knob controls how hard the springs are being driven, so you can dial in anything from a subtle hollow sound to an intense, big-canyon reverb worthy of the name Topanga!

Gear that makes you want to play

The self-avowed gearheads at Catalinbread focus on making musical devices that they want to use themselves — "gear that gets us excited and inspires us to play." The result of that authentic focus and unwavering integrity is the type of innovation that isn't market-driven; Catalinbread creates its own market for products players love, whether overdrive, delay/reverb, fuzz/distortion, or tremolo/modulation pedals (many of which are available at Sweetwater). The Topanga Spring Reverb Pedal is a powerful example of Catalinbread's commitment to exciting, inspiring innovation.

Reviews

Great amp like spring reverb
If you amp doesn't have reverb, the Topanga can give you a great spring emulation. It is a one trick pony though, having only a really nice spring sound. I have a Source Audio Collider with its True Spring patch also a Strymon Flint for comparison. The Topanga holds its own sonically. It's a mono pedal, so it's perfect in front of or in an amps effects loop. That's where it shines in my setup. Check out some online videos to hear it in use. Solid and not cheap, but for me, it's worth it!

Awesome!!
I run this toward the end of my chain as a always on subtle reverb and it rocks. Just as good as the Fender amp and helps shape my tone running into house board. Love it!

Topanga
Love it! Simple controls, sounds great.
Catalinbread Topanga Spring Reverb
For over a year, I had been looking for a spring reverb pedal for my Suhr Hombre amp. My intention was to find a suitable pedal to use as an always on, set-and-forget pedal, and had to run into the front of the amp, as the Hombre has no effects loop. Initially, I was looking for something to emulate the onboard spring reverb of a combo amp. I play mostly blues, and classic rock. After sampling several reverb pedals, I kept coming back to the Topanga. Even though it was not designed to emulate onboard spring reverb (it was designed to emulate an outboard Fender Reverb), and it seems to be pigeon-holed into surf music, it by far is the best sounding spring reverb in pedal form that I could find. I have it set to a relatively mild setting, and as I turn up the volume, or play harder, it reacts in a very realistic way. Even though this pedal has been out for a few years, I think it is still one of the best, and destined to be a classic.
It’s one of the best spring pedals
Always heard great th Bugs about this pedal.

Have been trying to choose between this one, and the Source Audio True Spring, as I know they're both great.

Finally decided to make the plunge and get the Topanga. Glad I did, it was well worth the wait for a Spring Reverb pedal.

Can get super drippy, swirly, spaghetti, tons of fun settings with this pedal.

Yea, it only does Spring which is not for everyone, and it also isn't nearly as versatile as some reverbs, but the Topanga does what it does to infinity and beyond. Truly delicious.

Like the Adineko Oil Can delay, Point Zero, and some of the other Catalinbread pedals, they aren't going to make you sound like a spaceman or alien, but they're going to do their thing and they're going to do it fabulously well.

Catalinbread rules, and the Topanga is one of the best Spring Reverb Effect Pedals there is.
