Put the Power of TONEX at Your Feet

Take the groundbreaking guitar modeling might of the IK Multimedia TONEX ecosystem out of the studio and onto the stage with the TONEX Pedal! In a nutshell, this pedal is a portable, computer-free way to access your TONEX Tone Model library, with a whopping 150 preset slots to store your favorite amplifiers, cabinets, pedals, and full-size rig models. IK Multimedia also grants you access to 1,000 of their Premium Tone Models (accessible via the included TONEX MAX software and the TONEX app), containing near-indistinguishable replications of some of the world’s rarest and most sought-after gear. Still, that’s only the beginning of the TONEX Pedal’s stage and studio utility with 5-pin MIDI I/O, USB audio interface functionality, stereo output, built-in effects, VIR cabinets, and much more, the TONEX Pedal’s all-encompassing feature set is all but guaranteed to become the centerpiece of your next stage or studio rig.

150 world-class Tone Models

The TONEX Pedal harnesses the power of IK Multimedia’s cutting-edge AI Machine Modeling technology to deliver you up to 150 studio-grade Tone Model presets at any one time. This pedal is essentially the world’s most well-stocked studio guitar locker in an easily portable pedal format, packed to the brim with exact tonal replicas of the world’s most sought-after amplifiers, pedals, cabinets, and even full-size rigs. Plus, while IK provides 1,000 premium tone models right out of the gate, you can also download unlimited free user models for a truly endless assortment of tones.

The centerpiece of your TONEX ecosystem

While the TONEX Capture and TONEX software are excellent choices for musicians at home or in the studio, the TONEX Pedal is a performing musician’s dream! Boasting an exceptionally straightforward control scheme with three footswitches to swap between your presets, an assortment of knobs, and an easy-to-read screen allows you to take your TONEX models out of the studio and straight onto the stage — no computer necessary. Moreover, when testing the TONEX Pedal out at Sweetwater, we were incredibly impressed by its straightforward operation. The TONEX Pedal may be host to some of the most advanced modeling technology in the guitar world, but operating it still feels like tweaking a pedal or dialing in a traditional amplifier.

Ultra-realistic VIR cabinet simulations

The TONEX Pedal comes equipped with a host of IK Multimedia VIR (Volumetric Impulse Response) cabinet simulations to offer the most true-to-life Tone Models possible. These top-class simulations utilize hundreds of IRs per cabinet to capture every nuance and detail of playing through a traditional speaker cabinet in the flesh. What’s more, the TONEX Pedal is also fully compatible with custom IRs. You can even create a cab sim of your favorite speaker cabinet using TONEX Capture or TONEX Software.

Effortless home recording

For all the TONEX Pedal’s performance-minded features, make no mistake: this pedal is primed for the studio. In fact, the TONEX Pedal doubles in function as a full-fledged USB audio interface, allowing you to lay down studio-quality guitar tracks in your DAW of choice with just your instrument and the TONEX Pedal. Lastly, a rear-panel headphone jack allows for simple direct monitoring of your tone and makes the TONEX Pedal an endlessly convenient noise-free practice partner.

Tone X Is the real Deal!

I was very skeptical about purchasing a Tone X. I am blown away. It works perfectly before or after my drive pedals. In front of the amp. Even the stock presets are very useable. And for the money. It's way worth the money. A+

Awesome, just awesome!

First, you have to understand what this pedal is and does. It is NOT a competitor of the Kemper, Fractal, or Helix, although the raw amp and speaker presets are just as good, if not BETTER, and easier to work with because of the IK software. Consider this a competitor of the Boss IR-200, Strymon, etc "amp in a box" pedals. On that note, it BLOWS the competition away (I tried MANY, and all of them fell short).

I run my analog pedals into this unit, with the time-based effects running after it on my pedalboard, then into a powered FRFR speaker and FOH. Seriously, the tones out of this thing are STELLAR. And, to boot, reverb, comp, noise gate, and crunch pedals (although I keep the presets clean and use the analog OD/boost pedals on my board instead).

You'd be amazed at what it sounds like into a small, powered speaker. And, what a bonus - a speaker on a stand sitting at 5' high behind you makes it really easy to hear yourself! I played one gig so far in a small venue, and while I still need to do some tweaking, I am seriously considering making this my primary rig. For the price, there's nothing that even comes close to the Tonex.

The future is here. AI has taken over.

I had been looking for an alternative to a Helix/QC/Kemper-type of unit for my board for a while that only did amp modelling and that was within my budget. So when the Tonex released, it was a no-brainer. The amp models are second-to-none in terms of sheer accuracy, confirmed by null-tests. You spend so much of your time as a guitar player looking at amps and pedals and cabs/speakers and drooling over some and wondering what others sound like. Now we have a pedal that can scratch all those itches.

Want to play on that awful Crate you had when you were 16? That Mesa-Boogie your favorite guitarist plays. That coveted Marshall that everyone says is a holy grail? That obscure amp you saw once that nobody had ever heard of? That "amazing" pedal that was discontinued 15 years ago and is now selling for hundreds of dollars second-hand? Well now it's all yours! As long as someone owns it and has Tonex, that is.

It not only does amps, cabs, and distortion pedals well, but it can also do boost pedals, drives, compressors, distressors, EQ presets, whatever a Sonic Maximizer does, etc. It also does amps, pedals, DI pedals, and cabs for bass and acoustic guitar as well. The bass models sound just as good and realistic as the guitar models, but I haven't yet had the opportunity to test out any acoustic models or pedals yet.

The onboard compressor and reverb leave little to be desired and the included noise gate works better than my TCE Sentry, which is an amazing gate itself. The onboard EQ, presence, and depth controls respond the way you'd expect a real amp would, and has parametric controls via the Preset menu. The "gain" control for the amp is really the "input gain" so you really have to find a capture that's within the ballpark of the gain level you're going for, but the gain knob does help a lot for minor tweaking. Just don't expect to find a crunchy amp, crank the gain, and get a good hi-gain metal tone out of it. I find it's a lot more effective to back the gain off of an especially hot amp than trying to increase the gain on a weak sounding amp.

My only gripes are barely complaints, but the software could be a little more streamlined. AFAIK you cannot save the presets you made on the pedal to the Tonex software and you can't transfer presets you make in the Tonex software to the pedal. So, if you accidentally erase a preset on your pedal (I'll get to that) then you have to re-find the model that you used and remake the preset because there's no way to back it up on the software. ALSO, I've been encountering a problem when swapping preset around on the pedal where when you swap 2 presets, the swapped preset will fill both slots and erase the other preset, which can be infuriating at times, especially when you first get the pedal because you're trying to set up 150 presets...

That being said, this pedal is so good that, even with those complaints, I don't feel this pedal deserves any less than 5 stars. I got this thing a little over 2 weeks ago and I've barely done anything but play guitar and write/record music since. This thing has made me a very happy and very occupied guitarist.

This is a crazy review!

For quite a while I have considered getting a profiling/capturing/modeling device to have multiple amp sounds available for my band and personal enjoyment. The relatively steep price made me pause, especially since I really love the way my amp and pedal board sounds. Then I saw promotional videos for the Tonex pedal that sounded amazing, and the price of under $ was completely reasonable. I pulled the trigger and ordered one.

The presets sound fantastic. There are remarkably accurate models of every amp I can imagine, and they are easy to add to any of the 150 preset locations on the pedal using free software and a USB cable. I'm not a metal player, so there are plenty of super high gain tones that come standard that I have absolutely no use for. But given the overwhelming number of models that you can get on the ToneNET for free and the ease with which you can add them to your unit I don't consider that an issue.

I started with a 36 song set list that my band was scheduled to play on March 31, 2023. I went song by song and picked an amp sound that totally fit the song, and in many cases I had one sound for verses, another for choruses, and a third for guitar solos. I could save them with different volume levels, effects levels, etc. in addition to allowing me to have a different amp model for each part. So cool. I want to give you fair warning that there are so many amazing amps available to try that you can easily get lost in sampling all of your options and neglect to actually play songs. It takes a while to get over the embarrassment of riches that you're going to have when you get one of these.

We tested it out at rehearsal, and everybody raved about how good it sounded direct to the mixer. They loved my tone selections and thought it added to the realism that the guitar sounds matched the tones you were used to hearing on the real songs. I even took it one step further and used the MIDI feature to automatically make channel changes when we switched songs on the app we use for chords and lyrics (we use SongBook by LinkSoft and it supports bluetooth MIDI commands while running off either an Android or iOS device). It is very cool, and very capable.

Here's where this review gets crazy. On March 31, 2023 my band set up at a big ballroom in Little Rock, AR. We were scheduled to play a three hour gig for a dance club that evening. But instead, just when we were set to sound check emergency sirens went off and the building took a direct hit from an EF3 tornado. The building was destroyed, and my two guitars shattered (I lost a super nice Taylor 615ce and a Gibson ES 335 plus other stuff). The roof collapsed on us, and by nothing short of a miracle we escaped unharmed. Our equipment was not so fortunate. Everything was thrown around the room and we had to dig stuff out under piles of debris.

But we gathered stuff up, covered in rocks, mud, building materials, and drenched in rain since the roof blew off the building. I took it home, cleaned it up, dried it off, and noticed a knob missing. I went back to the music hall the next day and found the missing knob in the middle of a bunch of rocks and building material. That was like the needle in the haystack for sure. Finally, on the next day I plugged it in just to see what would happen. I fully expected it to be fried. I thought to myself, "at least I backed it up so I can restore all my favorite sounds when I get a replacement." Instead, I plugged it in and connected it to my PA and it plays perfectly. I'm so stoked!

I'm not suggesting anybody leave their Tonex out in the rain or abuse it like the tornado abused mine, but the build quality is clearly not shabby!

There are a few things I would like to see improved with the software interface, but as far as functionality and sound quality this unit is amazing. If you buy a reamp box you can capture any amp. I haven't bought one yet and I don't miss the ability to model a bunch of amps, because I don't have a bunch of amps. Plus, people with amps that are way out of my budget have already created pro grade models that I can get for free! And when I'm playing either at home or gigging out I bring a tiny little board with my Tonex and a direct box, and I'm guaranteed to sound fantastic. Load in and load out just got very easy.

This is absolutely worth the price, and not too tough to set up with your favorite sounds. Highly recommended

Very solid and amazing piece of gear!!

I purchased the tonex to cut down on my live rig with my band Revision, Revised. We play quite a bit and I wanted to simplify my live rig. The tonex has helped me simplify my rig to make set up a breeze for shows! I play a very low tuned multi scale bass and it holds up and sounds identical to my Darkglass X Ultra. I love the Tonex!
