TONEX Power Packed into ONE Pint-size Pedal

IK Multimedia’s TONEX ONE compresses the entire TONEX ecosystem into a compact miniature pedal format, putting the most sought-after guitar and bass sounds in history right at your feet. This bite-size pedal features 20 onboard Tone Model slots, allowing you to pick and choose from over 200 Premium Tone Models and more than 25,000 user-generated Tone Models via IK’s TONEX Librarian and ToneNET — you can even use the included TONEX SE software to create a virtual model of your pre-existing amp/cab/effects setup! Next, the TONEX ONE’s trio of color-adjustable mini knobs gives you access to a versatile 3-band EQ, a noise gate, a compressor, five built-in reverbs, and a handy tuner. And just like its bigger TONEX Pedal sibling, the TONEX ONE doubles in function as a USB audio interface. You also get a flexible IR loader, a mono/stereo TRS output that functions as a headphone jack, and A/B preset switching with two performance modes. You can easily place the IK Multimedia TONEX ONE into a gig bag or slot it into a busy pedalboard; it’s an immensely powerful modeling pedal that takes TONEX to a whole new level of portability.

Introducing TONEX FX

Free for all TONEX users, the TONEX FX update elevates IK Multimedia’s all-encompassing modeling ecosystem with the addition of 8 effects. No longer will you need to rely on your physical pedals to deck out your TONEX with time-based and modulation effects, as this update grants you two distinct delays, chorus, flanger, tremolo, phaser, and rotary effects — all of which are configurable via tap tempo. Next, the TONEX pedal’s reverb count grows to six, giving you a studio-grade selection of echoes to impart space and dimension to your sound. These powerful effects can be configured either pre- or post-amp and cab, with a grand total of seven FX blocks available for complete tonal customization.

A fully featured Tone Model machine

Don’t be fooled by the TONEX ONE’s ultra-compact construction. This miniature pedal unlocks full access to IK Multimedia’s ever-growing TONEX ecosystem, supplying you with scores of Tone Models to explore. What’s a Tone Model? IK Multimedia’s Tone Models are sonic profiles that harness the power of AI machine modeling to create an exacting virtual snapshot of a real-world guitar or bass amp/cab/effects rig.

Using only the TONEX ONE and the included TONEX SE software, this pedal gives you access to 200 Premium Tone Models, putting spot-on re-creations of the world’s most iconic amplifier models at your disposal. In fact, one of the standout features when testing the TONEX ONE at Sweetwater was how the included TONEX SE software could be used to capture your existing physical rig and save it as a Tone Model! Lastly, you can hop onto IK Multimedia’s preset-sharing ToneNET service to access more than 25,000 user-created Tone Models.

20 onboard Tone Model preset slots

Once you’ve picked out your preferred Tone Models, the TONEX ONE’s 20 Tone Model slots with three simultaneous playable slots allow you to save your favorite sounds for instant recall. Plus, each preset can be configured to feature any combination of amp, pedal, or entire-rig models. Best of all, the TONEX ONE’s footswitch can be set up to function in one of two performance modes: standard on/off operations when you click the switch or A/B switching between two presets. This functionality makes it a cinch to instantly switch between sparkling cleans and raw, ragged dirty tones.

Expansive, built-in utility effects

Right out of the box, the TONEX ONE comes loaded with a superb suite of utility features. This powerful little pedal’s trio of EQ knobs doubles in function, unlocking a pristine noise gate and a dynamic compressor to tweak and twist your tone. What’s more, the TONEX ONE’s built-in reverb control offers five stereo reverbs to add some space to your sound, from splashy, spring-style ’verb to lush plate tones to a traditional room echo. Finally, the TONEX ONE’s utility section is finished off with a convenient onboard tuner.

Record your riffs with an onboard USB audio interface

Looking to lay down a few tracks in your home studio? No problem — the IK Multimedia TONEX ONE doubles in function as a low-latency 24-bit/44.1kHz USB audio interface. All you need is your guitar and your TONEX ONE to record straight into your DAW with the stunning sound of TONEX Tone Models — with or without the pedal’s onboard presets. When it comes time to work on your next performance piece, the TONEX ONE’s TRS mono/stereo also functions as a headphone out for silent woodshedding sessions.

IK Multimedia TONEX ONE Features:

  • An immensely powerful guitar and bass amp/cab/effects modeling powerhouse that brings IK Multimedia’s state-of-the-art AI-machine-modeled TONEX ecosystem to the mini pedal format
  • Holds up to 20 Tone Models with 3 playable slots
  • Includes TONEX SE and TONEX Librarian for immediate access and intuitive navigation of over 200 Premium Tone Models and more than 25,000 user-created Tone Models accessible via ToneNET

  • Onboard analog-modeled 3-band EQ, compression, noise gate, and reverb to shape your sound
  • Reverb that includes 5 different tones to choose from, including spring, room, plate, and hall sounds
  • Built-in tuner to keep your guitar in perfect pitch
  • Micro knobs that can be configured to shine in a variety of different colors or no color at all
  • Doubles as a 24-bit/44.1kHz USB audio interface, allowing you to easily track riffs and ideas in your DAW using your favorite Tone Models

  • IR loader that accommodates both custom IRs and IK’s VIR cabs to impart space and realism to your tone

Best Choice Between Spark Go, IR-2 and Tonex One
I have all three and they all do the job of driving our PA at a gig, or an FRFR at practice. I built a Princeton Reverb and it has trained me to prefer its tone. The Tonex One (free included) Tonex SE software had plenty of Princetons to choose from. My duo partner, who is not an electric guitarist, commented that Tonex was the best of the three (I had been using the Spark Go to drive our PA for the last year plus).

The Boss IR-2 wins for its simplest of the three user interfaces and classic Boss ruggedness. It is between the Spark and Tonex in tone quality. It lacks the flexibility of the other two. No tuner makes it not as simple a gig setup for me (I prefer guitar -> single pedal -> PA).

The Spark wins for a good iPhone app and an internal speaker for vacations or acoustic volume level jams.

The Tonex SE software is unintuitive and buggy, but it gets the job done. With it you load 20 options from the SE library of 200 into the pedal, and then select three of them to be the A & B of AB mode, or the Stomp of Stomp/Bypass mode. I chose to only load 10 model options, each one twice, and code the pedal's LEDs to roll R->G->B as you work through the now only 10 options. I keep a list of the 10 options and this cheat sheet with me.

Alternate Parameters => ALT, ALT/B/M/T blink repeatedly => as labeled
AB vs Stomp => ALT 6 seconds, ALT Blue, setup => Bass CCW green AB, CW amber Stomp
Browse/Set Models => FS+ALT, ALT purple, FS B/M/T => Bass preset A, Mid preset B, Treble Stomp
Cab Bypass => ALT 6 seconds, ALT Blue, setup => Mid CCW green Cab on, CW red Cab off *
Input Trim => ALT 6 seconds, ALT Blue, setup => Treble sets trim, red too high...
Safe Mode (freeze settings) => ALT 3 seconds, B/M/T blink once
Tuner => FS until ALT pink => ALT toggles mute on/off

* ALT blinks every 5 seconds when Cab bypassed
Enter and Exit of modes are the same button pushes and times
All changes are autosaved

There are several brands of lithium USB rechargeable 9v batteries with more than enough capacity to run the Tonex for a three set gig. I attach the battery with a Command Strip and use one of those 9v battery to 5.5/2.1mm negative tip adapters.

Bass Player using Tone X One
Delivery was good. USB cable included. As bass players we want something easy to carry and to fit in a pedal board. This pedal works great once you figure it out with the installation of tone x software. Amplitube is another topic. Lot of nice presets available (free): sans amp, fender, Marshall, acoustic, etc. Up to 20 presets available stays short for all the nice tones available out there (I imagine paid ones are much better). Tone net collaborators have made a great job so far emulating cabs and heads. Looking forward to add a second unit to my pedalboard.

Pain in the butt to set up, sounds amazing once you do and easy to use afterwards.
My Situation:

I have a nice tube amp and a cab to go with it. It's my baby and I love it. Yet I'm not going to carry this 80lb monstrosity around for a gig. So I use my PA.

Last year I did solely acoustic guitar with a clean sound because it was the only thing that sounded decent through my PA, but with the electric guitar clean tone sounded weak and tinny, and if I used either one of my distortion pedals to get some crunch it just sounded like absolute dog water. So I needed a solution.

_________

The Software:

I tried out a couple of default tones in the pedal and I wasn't really impressed. They are decent sounding but if you are looking for some *good* sounds you'll need to use the software. The software also makes it easier to balance the different profiles you can load on the pedal. I would say if you're going to use this system, expect to use the software to get the sound you want.

The software is pretty well designed, but because it is so thorough it is a headache trying to figure out how to use it. You need to use 'tonex editor' now, good luck figuring out the rest on your own.
_____
Tone difference between software and hardware:

Some people complain that the settings sound different between the software and the pedal... My guess its because they're playing through their computer speakers rather than their guitar rig.. so of course it would sound different.. if you're using different speakers... that's all I have to say about that.
_____
Community support + Amp Modeling:

In my opinion the best part of this combo is amp modeling. Not because I want to model my amp, its because other people have already done it with theirs. And it sounds GOOD. Yea, genuinely good. It's also cool to try out some like really big name guitar amp models. It feels like I'm playing dress up with a suit of armor and a machine gun. I love it. People have really spent a lot of time getting a great sound modeled, then just put it up for free on the community hub. It's really awesome, and that factor alone in my opinion makes this worth going for. Cause imo there will never be a shortage of really good tones out there that people have vetted through their own personal taste.

Amp modeling itself is a real hassle and you need a lot of equipment, and probably a studio setup to be honest. If you just want to play guitar modeling your amp is probably more work then you're bargaining for, but don't let me stop you.
_____
The pedal after setup:

AFTER you go through the mind numbing process of going through all the programs and setting up your pedal, and dialing in a few adjustments in your tone (you don't have as much freedom to mold a amp model as opposed to an actual amp so you kinda just gotta find a model that you already like and tweek it just a lil bit). Once you do all that the pedal works GREAT, and SOUNDS GOOD. Like REALLY GOOD. It's actually hard to believe this lil pedal is doing so much work for the sound. It's really cool and perfect for my situation.

_____
I would recommend this if:
You are a gigging musician and don't want to lug an amp around, you can plug pretty much into a DI box or PA and get a great tone without moving/micing amps ext..

You have a sound system but not an amp. I could imagine this pluggin into some nice speakers and sounding good.

Recording? Ehhhhh. There are plugins for recording with Tonex. I haven't used them. I'm sure they're fine. I don't really want it for that though.

Overall I would reccomend it completely, but just know if it really makes sense to use an amp sim for you. You can also load pedals onto this thing (its like one or the other you know), which i could imagine is cool. I guess you could have a whole pedal board full of these things that all do different things but, idk man messing around with the software is not that much fun, and the flexibility you have with the controls on the pedal is very cumbersome imo.

Swiss Army Box Backup Rig and Practice Aid
I bought this just before Thanksgiving 2024. Shout out to August for helping me out! It took me some time getting the understanding of this pedal. Mainly because I am lazy and have been slow footing my education past just tinkering one sound I found that I like. Once I broke the "is this pedal really for me" phase and started to learn it's functioning, it has blown my mind. I am someone who comes from the Helix family so the interface was off-putting at first. That is until I learned how to use it without the doubling sound that everyone talks about. Once I got into it's functioning and understood everything, life became easy with this pedal. There are soo many great captures out there. Right now I am stuck on a capture of the dirty channels of a Marshall and Vox in parallel, just rock heaven. If you don't need this type of pedal, I would argue that you are wrong. It would make a perfect headphone amp, back up rig and much more. The possibilities of this little pedal are enormous and sound just as big. I am very happy with this product. It will be all about what you put into your experience on whether or not this pedal is for you. Thanks again August.

Put in the time with the software; it’s worth it!
My Tonex 1 pedal came in on Friday evening. It's Sunday night and I am thrilled with it! I will admit that all of the claims about Tonex's software are true; it is NOT easy to navigate. If you hate having to use a computer to set up your gear, give this one a second thought. I hooked the pedal up to an active PA speaker without going through the software first and was very disappointed. Once I connected it to the Tonex librarian I discovered that the IRs had been disabled by default. Turning them on changed everything!

Here's what I came to rave about: the Sweetwater collection that was included with the pedal's purchase is SOOO good. My two current default amps are a clean Plexi and Mitch Gallagher's modded Deluxe Reverb. Both sound AMAZING. This addition to the purchase alone makes it worth buying from Sweetwater!

What Do Our In-house Gear Experts Think?
Much to the pleasure of our orthopedists, professional-grade modeling gear keeps getting smaller and more powerful every year. While there will always be a purpose and a place in our hearts for massive amplifier stacks and sprawling pedalboards, lugging around a backbreaking rig is now an option rather than a requirement. The impeccable authenticity and endless sonic possibilities of modern pedals were unthinkable for guitarists and bassists of the past, much less the fact that these devices can now quite literally fit in the palm of your hand. It's a golden age for guitarists and bassists, to be sure. This fact is exemplified by three of our favorite modern multi-effects and modeling pedals: the TC Electronic Plethora X1, the Line 6 HX One, and the IK Multimedia ToneX One. Each of these "ones" boasts its own distinct advantages for the modern musician, so we'll start with a quick review of each pedal's features then finish by helping you nail down which of the three is right for you! Along the way, we'll include a few sound samples of our favorite effects to show you what these premium pedals are capable of! Full disclosure: the HX One and Plethora X1 samples were recorded through a Universal Audio Dream '65 Reverb Amp pedal while the ToneX One samples utilize a black-panel Fender Deluxe Reverb emulation that was loaded into the pedal. TC Electronic Plethora X1 We'll kick off our discussion with the TC Electronic Plethora X1, the newest of our three devices. This ultra-portable stereo multi-effects pedal plays one effect preset at a time, features seven dual-slot banks for a total of 14 possible effects, and hosts seven preloaded all-time-classic TC Electronic effects to choose from out of the box. While it's technically correct to say that the Plethora X1 comes equipped with seven effects, each one offers sonic variations pulled directly from the modeled TC Electronic pedal. For example, the Plethora X1's reverb doesn't merely unlock a single reverb patch; it grants you all the time-tested reverb tones of the TC Electronic Hall of Fame II reverb pedal from splashy spring sounds and moody modulated 'verbs to angelic shimmery tones. Cycling through presets is as simple as turning the pedal's dedicated preset knob, and you can switch between two effects using the A/B mode. Plus, it's a breeze to swap presets for fresh, new effects by connecting via USB-C or Bluetooth to the Plethora X1's TonePrint companion app. Although the trio of parameter knobs and the 1-inch color LCD allow intuitive sculpting of your currently selected effect, the TonePrint app provides access to a panoply of in-depth parameter options to craft the presets of your dreams. Yet, if you're more of a plug-and-play type of guitarist, then the TonePrint app also contains countless artist-curated presets. Add to cartLearn MoreAdd to list Line 6 HX One At first glance, the Line 6 HX One appears to be a close analogue to the Plethora X1. Both pedals feature a robust collection of effects; both pedals can play a single effect at a time; both pedals have stereo ins and outs; and both pedals have "one" in the name. However, a closer look reveals that these two stompboxes are aimed at different players -- let's quickly go over the HX One's features to set the record straight. The HX One clocks in about the size of two standard pedals placed side by side and is positively crammed with effects fueled by Line 6's industry-leading HX technology. How many effects? It has 128 onboard preset slots and more than 250 total effects, and the list grows larger all the time. From fan-favorite Line 6 delays and reverbs to exacting sonic emulations of legendary overdrive pedals, the HX One's effects collection truly encompasses all -- it would be far easier to list what effects the HX One can't cover. Add to cartLearn MoreAdd to list Add to cartLearn MoreAdd to list Add to cartLearn MoreAdd to list Add to cartLearn MoreAdd to list Navigating this comprehensive collection is a joy, thanks to the HX One's straightforward workflow, Effect knob, and OLED screen, while the top three knobs ensure lightning-fast editing of your current effect's parameters. What's more, if you're running a complex stage rig or require extensive in-the-moment dynamics control, then you'll be sure to appreciate the HX One's 5-pin MIDI connections and handy expression-pedal input. Finished with an inspiring Flux feature that transitions between two presets, USB-C, and a powerful desktop editor, the Line 6 HX One puts a treasure trove of professional-grade effects at your command. https://youtu.be/SitWOzMaH7E?si=6lhJa_DwH52TGzKW IK Multimedia ToneX One Finally, we come to IK Multimedia's ToneX One. It's the black sheep of the "ones" since the ToneX One is primarily a modeler that plays IK's AI machine-modeled Tone Models. What's a Tone Model? Effectively entire signal chains unto themselves, Tone Models comprise seven blocks: Noise Gate, Amp, Cab, Comp, Modulation, Delay, and Reverb. ToneX One comes loaded with 20 Tone Models right out of the gate, and the pedal's included TONEX SE software provides access to 200 additional Premium Tone Models and more than 25,000 (and constantly growing!) Tone Models to load up on ToneNET. Best of all, you can craft your own custom Tone Models by mixing and matching the software's extensive arrangement of exquisitely captured amps, cabs, and stomps (modeled boost, overdrive, distortion, fuzz, EQ, and preamp pedals). Did we mention that this pedal also doubles as a full-fledged USB audio interface? Once you've dialed in your 20 preferred Tone Models from TONEX SE's nearly endless options, the ToneX One pedal offers an impressive degree of fine-tuning on the pedal itself with its trio of mini dual-function knobs (Bass/Gate, Mid/Comp, Treble/Reverb). Plus, the ToneX One features two modes to aid you in your recording and performing endeavors: a Stomp mode that engages and disengages your currently selected Tone Model and a Dual mode that swaps between two Tone Models with a click of the footswitch. All in all, the ToneX One presents an entire rig that fits in the palm of your hand. Add to cartLearn MoreAdd to list Add to cartLearn MoreAdd to list https://youtu.be/-UACiMGJRXw?si=RE7x_y5zBascvVw2 Which Pedal Is Right for Me? Now that we've gotten the hardware specs and features out of the way, it's time for the main event: which of these three pedals is right for you? https://youtu.be/nO3OklFYSAg?si=PJP0xJFCyjC8d_GS Why Would You Choose the TC Electronic Plethora X1? TC Electronic's Plethora X1 is lean and clocks in at the most economical price point. Onboard control isn't quite as robust as the others, although connecting to the TonePrint app via Bluetooth or USB supplies a seriously massive assortment of tonal tools to explore. Furthermore, while the Plethora X1's 14 effects may pale in comparison on paper to the HX One's 250 and the ToneX One's 25,000 available through ToneNET, it's important to remember that each of those 14 are entire modeled pedals with their own subsets of effect types and patches. When you add up all the distinct variations -- along with the extremely in-depth editing options and artist-curated presets of TC Electronic's TonePrint app -- the race for sounds is a lot closer than it might appear when simply comparing spec sheets! Taking all these points into account, we'd recommend the Plethora X1 to the player who requires a versatile multi-effects library with all the hits yet also favors a standard stompbox workflow. In fact, once you've set your seven presets with the TonePrint app, navigating the Plethora X1 is essentially identical to dialing in sounds on any of TC Electronic's stompboxes, only you get a convenient screen to check your presets and parameters. Add to cartLearn MoreAdd to list Add to cartLearn MoreAdd to list Why Would You Choose the Line 6 HX One? Of these three pedals, the Line 6 HX One boasts the richest range of effects to choose from. These effects cover everything from the chorus, reverb, delay, and so on offered by the Plethora X1 and the ToneX One to esoteric and experimental effects such as ring modulators and bitcrushers. The HX One also provides a rock-solid set of overdrive, distortion, and fuzz models to explore -- a key fact to consider if you're going between the HX One and the Plethora X1, which does not feature these effects. When it comes time to adjust your parameters, almost everything you need is right on the pedal. Who would we recommend the Line 6 HX One to? We recommend it for any guitarist or bassist who can't live without every effect at their disposal. Slapping an HX One onto your pedalboard dramatically opens up your sonic options, and it's a no-brainer for gigging musicians tackling diverse set lists that might need a vibe pedal for one song and a guitar synth for the next. The HX One also leverages superior in-the-moment control and functionality, featuring an expression-pedal input, MIDI, and a dedicated tap tempo/Flux footswitch. Why Would You Choose the IK Multimedia ToneX One? There's no doubt about it: the IK Multimedia ToneX One is markedly different from the reasonably similar HX One and Plethora X1. Still, with AI machine modeling and the ability to emulate boost, overdrive, distortion, fuzz, EQ, and preamp pedals, there's a compelling argument to be made that the ToneX One is the effects (and amp) modeler for you! This pedal's 20 onboard Tone Models can be configured via USB with TONEX SE to include most bread-and-butter effects, though ToneNET's constantly rising number of downloadable community Tone Models dwarfs anything else by comparison. That said, the ToneX One's bonus ability to capture stomps gives it a leg up when it comes to dirt boxes. Another point to consider is that the ToneX One is highly dependent on its included software. The pedal itself offers strong adjustability, yet ceaseless tone chasers will regularly need to venture back into TONEX SE to switch up their sounds. For this reason, ToneX One is a superb option for any musician already invested in IK Multimedia's ecosystem -- especially if you're interested in digitally capturing your current rig and loading it on your ToneX One as a Tone Model! Add to cartLearn MoreAdd to list Add to cartLearn MoreAdd to list Add to cartLearn MoreAdd to list Software-shy musicians and those obsessed with modulation, time-based, and other such effects may opt for our other two offerings, yet the ToneX One makes up ground with its ability to play multiple effects simultaneously and its massive library of modeled amps and effects. So, while the HX One and Plethora X1 are squarely aimed at rounding out an existing rig with their multi-effects mastery, the ToneX One is our recommendation for the guitarist or bassist who wants their entire rig -- several amps and cabs alongside an assortment of effects -- in one ultra-portable package. In short, the ToneX One works better as a centerpiece than as a supplement. Three Are Better Than One ToneX One, HX One, Plethora X1 -- our three pint-size "one" pedals offer guitarists and bassists myriad professional-grade sonic possibilities that would have seemed impossible just a few years ago. Modern musicians are truly spoiled when it comes to affordable tonal tools, so we'll leave you with one last intriguing prospect: a setup that combines these pedals would be a formidable rig, indeed. A ToneX One paired with an HX One or a Plethora X1 (or both!) could serve as your home studio or stage rig with a little finagling. It's no exaggeration that these three pedals together cover any tone you can dream of, from effects-laden shoegaze soundscapes to swampy blues attitude to modern gain-drenched metal mayhem. No matter which of these pedals you choose, there's no going wrong -- each is a welcome addition to any adventurous guitarist's or bassist's rig. And if still you need help nailing down which "one" would best fit your setup, then simply call up your Sweetwater Sales Engineer at (800) 222-4700 for expert advice on everything gear!
