Paul Cochrane’s Celebrated Boutique Overdrive—Available from MXR

There’s nothing more satisfying than dialing up the perfect guitar tone, but what do you do when you want to hit it with some overdrive without chucking your hard-earned tone out the door? Famed pedal builder, Paul Cochrane, was well aware of this predicament and set about to create an overdrive that could punch up your tone while retaining its fundamental character — thus the Timmy Overdrive was born. The Timmy pedal was well-priced and highly desired, and the demand for it often outran the production. So, Paul has teamed up with MXR to bring Timmy to a wider audience. Now you can level-up your rig with Timmy’s celebrated transparent overdrive, designed to bring out the expressiveness of your playing, while giving you access to myriad tones and textures via its four control knobs (Bass, Treble, Volume, and Gain) and a Clip switch with three distinct clipping profiles to fit a range of playing styles. Sweetwater is proud to offer the MXR Timmy Overdrive Pedal; it’s a tone-head’s delight!

Huge, transparent tone enhances your core sound

Due to its vast tonal palette and ability to keep a guitarist’s core tone intact, the MXR Timmy Overdrive has been called a working guitar player’s dream come true. So, what gives Timmy its signature transparency and musicality? First, the Treble and Bass controls on Timmy are cut-only, which prevents you from overhyping your signal. Instead, it puts the focus on eliminating unwanted upper and lower frequencies. Second, the Bass control is wired to affect your signal before it hits the overdrive stage, so you get a cleaner, more focused low end. On the other side, the Treble control affects the signal post-overdrive, which helps you smooth out grittier tones while accentuating pleasing harmonics. Finally, Timmy’s unique three-way Clip switch lets you select from three different clipping types, moving from light saturation to massive, crunchy distortion.

MXR Timmy Overdrive Pedal Features:

  • Designed by renowned pedal builder Paul Cochrane
  • Musical-sounding overdrive that keeps your core tone intact
  • Cut-only Bass and Treble controls
  • Independent Gain and Volume controls
  • Three selectable clipping profiles that cover a range of styles
  • Packed in a pedalboard-friendly MXR mini housing

Brought back to the board!
Timmy got sent to the closet when I swapped it out for a morning glory. Not better or worse, just different. And you know how you take your favorite guitar and set up your amp and all the dials on pedals to perfection? Then switch guitars and it all sounds horrible? Well, take Timmy out of the closet and put it first in the chain, basically as an eq and level control.
My fave sound is asat with mojotone broadcaster pups. Now I can get out my bluesboy with P 90 and humbucker OR Charvel tele with active fishman fluence system, click on Timmy with bass and level cut and presto! All my drive pedals sound great. Now I play all my guitars because it's easy to switch. And the guitars still maintain their different characteristics. Seriously, I was about to spend a lot of money on new pickups or a boss eq pedal, but this did the trick.
Just what I expected.
This little Timmy is the new star of the board. ;) Blues, blues/rock player looking for a smooth OD that maintained articulation even when the gain was boosted. Found it here. Compliments my other ODs that drive mainly Fender tube amps. A DRRI, Blues Jr. IV and a 57 Champ. This little guy handles all well. It truly unlocked sweet tones I wasn't able to quite dial in with an assortment of other pedals. 65 years young here and playing for nearly 50 of those. Only regret is not discovering this little gem sooner. Per usual, efficient Sweetwater sale and delivery.
Music background: Ex bands. Now home studio player and recorder.
Timmaaaahhhh
Wow what a great pedal! This is a proper overdrive pedal IMO. Very transparent. Reacts to your pick attack and guitar volume extremely well. Find your spot and work the magic with your guitar volume and picking hand. Plus it's tiny!
Music background: Everything but country. Always tweaking to find new sounds

It is an awesome addition. The tonal differences give you unlimited possibilities. I love the transparency of the distortion. It is perfect
Music background: I have played on stage since I was fifteen years old. I’ve been in many many different bands over that time. Country , Classic Rock, Oldies, Show bands, Jazz /blues ensembles etc. I presently have three guitars, a Fender B Bender Telecaster, a Fen
Amazing Overdrive
I don’t know where to start. This tiny pedal has so many tones packed in it. Although I have never played a Timmy made by Paul Cochrane, I can definitely see why this overdrive is so legendary and beloved by gear aficionados. Eirik from Livingroom Gear Demos declared it the greatest overdrive ever made (which is quite a claim). Once you figure out how to manage the treble and bass knobs, you can easily dial in a wide array of sounds to suit your needs. The bass knob is quite powerful and can do wonders for your bottom end without getting muddy or dull. I also love how the gain allows individual notes to ring out even when you strum a chord. This is one of those rare drive pedals that makes both lead and rhythm playing fun and inspiring. I look forward to more future collaborations between boutique pedal builders and bigger manufacturers like Dunlop/MXR.
