Re-create an Iconic Thrash Metal Tone

You'll be hard-pressed to find a metal guitarist anywhere who doesn't respect Dave Mustaine's Rust in Peace-era tone. The tight lows, scooped mids, and aggressive highs that fueled the album's breakneck riffs, complex arrangements, fluid time signatures, and blazing-fast leads are the stuff of myths and legends. Now, thanks to Seymour Duncan, you can harness that sound for yourself. Drop a Dave Mustaine Thrash Factor pickup into your axe, crank up a British stack, and you'll re-create one of the most iconic guitar tones in metal history.

A JB unlike any other

Dave Mustaine's guitar tone on Rust in Peace epitomizes thrash metal. He primarily achieved this sound using a guitar loaded with a Seymour Duncan SH-4 JB bridge pickup. Dave maintains that the sound of the JB in this guitar was markedly different than an off-the-shelf pickup. To create the Dave Mustaine Thrash Factor, Seymour Duncan worked closely with Dave, employing an altered winding process to duplicate the tone of his JB. The result is similar to an SH-4 JB, but with tighter lows, slightly scooped mids, and more aggressive highs. If you've been searching for a way to hot rod your axe, this is it!

Why choose Seymour Duncan?

Quite simply, it boils down to tone. Seymour Duncan has spent the majority of his life refining the art of creating pickups. Seymour Duncan is dedicated to getting the best tone possible from his pickups, from modern metal monsters to faithful reproductions of gems from the '50s and '60s. At Sweetwater, we know that tone is important to you, which is why we choose to carry Seymour Duncan pickups. With the massive amount of pickups available from Seymour Duncan, you're certain to find the sound you've been looking for.

Awesome
Where do I begin? This is the most passive pickup I have ever used. It is definitely a hot rod and is designed with thrash tone in mind. It delivers serious growls low end while letting the highs cut right through. The only warning I would give is that it is a hot pickup and even tends to breakup on clean channels but if you're looking for something that just sounds angry this is right up your alley.
Refined JB Pickup.
Got the bridge Thrash Factor (TF) installed in my Les Paul which had the Seymour Duncan 59 & JB combo for years. Though I love the JB I found it has too much bass and not enough treble even after adjusting the pickup height and screw pieces to accommodate. The Thrash Factor checks all the boxes. I am not a metal or thrash player. Do not have the name make you think the pickup is only for thrash metal and more aggressive tones, it is as versatile as the JB. The pickup can accomplish blues, classic rock and standard rock territories. If you love the JB but need more clarity and definition definitely check out the Thrash Factor!

Dave’s Tornado of Tone
Where do I start? I got this pickup on a whim. I already love Seymour Duncan, and when I chose to try these out I was back to using the "Het Set" EMG"s. I was hopping that using these after trying the Gus G blackouts would let me know for sure whether I really loved SD. However, I never found a reason to try to SD until I as sure. That time was now with the Thrash Factor. I posited with the SD preamp pot and just blows everything I"ve tried so far out of the water. On my LP Traditonal, I can really hear the guitar—I mean really hear it. The lows growl and have a classic LP tone with a bit edge and bite that comes from the custom pickup and active pot. The highs clear up like a dream and make my average playing sound amazing. I am not saying that this will make you a better since even SD and Dave can"t produce those kinds of miracles, but they will inspire you. Please try them.
