A Classic Tele with Modern Flavor

Some folks think Teles are a twanging one-trick pony. They obviously never played a Fender Player Series Telecaster. Loaded with dual Alnico V single-coil pickups, this axe delivers everything from country twang to jazzy articulation to high-octane rock 'n' roll — and anything in between. A modern C-shaped neck and 22-fret, 9.5"-radius fingerboard give you a decidedly contemporary feel with fast action and comfortable playability. You also get a synthetic bone nut, 6-saddle string-through bridge, and Fender standard sealed tuners. If you appreciate classic Tele tone but crave a more modern flavor, pick up the Player Series Telecaster. But be warned — you won't want to put it down.

Fender's Player Series: vintage vibe, modern edge

For their new Player Series guitars, Fender went back to the drawing board with updated radii for more historically accurate body shapes, new vintage-inspired finishes, and a classic logo that harkens back to the Fenders of yesteryear. But these smooth-playing instruments also look to the future with modern enhancements that include 22-fret necks, upgraded bridges for better sustain, and refined pickups that crank out legendary Fender tone by the boatload.

Alnico V pickups deliver punchy sounds with ample output

You're sure to cut through the mix, thanks to the Player Series Telecaster's Alnico V single-coil pickups. These pups deliver the classic tones that have been with us since the dawn of the Tele, but with increased punch and output. If you're into chicken pickin', you'll love the sound of this Tele's bridge pickup. And single-line jazz and country lines sound heavenly on the neck pickup. Full-on amp distortion sounds great in either position, yielding tight lows and stinging highs. Aggressive twang, smoky jazz, saturated high-gain — everything sounds great through these pickups.

Maple neck and fingerboard

Leo Fender wasn't a guitar player. In fact, he got his start repairing radios. When designing his original instruments, he had no idea that guitars weren't supposed to have maple necks. This Fender Player Series Telecaster has the revered maple neck and a tried-and-true maple fingerboard, supplying you with a snappy feel and clear-as-a-bell sound. In keeping with contemporary tastes, this Tele has a more modern C-shaped maple neck with a satin urethane finish.

The Fender Telecaster — a brief history

This is it: the original guitar that started Fender's march into contemporary music history. It appeared in the early 1950s and was first named the Broadcaster. The ingeniously simple design, the bolt-on neck, and the slab body all contribute to the guitar's trademark tones and player-friendly feel. From Nashville twang to blistering rock tones, the Telecaster sound has made its presence felt in nearly every musical category. The diverse list of Telecaster players, including Muddy Waters, Keith Richards, James Burton, Bruce Springsteen, Joe Strummer, and John 5 (and quite a few of us here at Sweetwater) attests to the guitar's universal appeal.

Fender Player Series Telecaster Features:

  • A Telecaster with classic tones and modern playability
  • Alnico V single-coil pickups deliver punchy sounds with ample output
  • Fast-action modern C-shaped neck and 22-fret, 9.5"-radius fingerboard
  • Synthetic bone nut enhances vibrational transfer through the neck
  • 6-saddle string-through bridge supplies a mean bite and excellent intonation
  • Fender standard sealed tuners for rock-solid tuning

Player Telecasters are great!

I've had this Telecaster for almost 2 months. I owned another maple neck Player Telecaster but sold it to a friend, so I knew what to expect. One day while cruising the Sweetwater website I found a 6lb 14oz sunburst/maple neck. Perfect!

This guitar resonates so much not plugged in. Sounds fantastic plugged in. And the neck on these maple necks is as good as any I've played. Very happy with this purchase. :)

Highly recommended.

Love it!

I love my latest guitar. I had it set up and it plays really nice. The only issue I have is that the tuning pegs are really loose. I've had better on my bullet strats and teles. I'll have to look into replacing those at some point.

Aside from that, the guitar is pretty close to perfect!

Thank you Gregg Block for always taking care of my guitar needs and wants!

Country/Rock/Blues

Sweet Fender. The 3 tone sun burst looks great. Sweet neck and I got some sweet Birdseye going on. Would be five stars if it would stay in tune better but that's not sweetwaters problem. An easy upgrade will fix that problem. Dontae Harris and the Sweetwater crew are outstanding. They will take care of you.

Great Experience

This was a gift for my son. He fell in love with it right from the get go. Looks great and plays very easy, especially for a relative beginner. Glad I made the right choice. Mike Soper always makes sure everything goes well no matter how big or small my order is. He's the best. Sweetwater Rocks

At Least as Good as Expected

I've had my sunburst for a week now, and have had time to adjust the truss rod, fiddle with the action a little, and polish the frets. I'll be doing more tweaking, but it's already very playable and sounds terrific.

Overall quality is very good. Fit and finish are excellent, and it's a beautiful guitar. Appears to be a two piece body, has nice grain, and is under eight pounds.

I chose this particular Telecaster because I liked the specs...9.5" fretboard raidius, 22 nice big frets. I went with the maple neck. I like the cast, individual saddles, as I like adjustability over whatever supposed tone enhancement there may be with the traditional barrel saddles. No push-pull pots or other electronic amenities, which is just fine.

Aside from further tweaking, like a minimal leveling of the frets, I don't have any mods in mind, although this basic model offers a great platform for those who like to mod. I find the tuners to be just fine. Pickups are good. If I get the urge to swap the pickups out, I'll just watch a video of Jack Pearson playing his stock Squier Telecaster or his stock Squier Stratocaster.

It's yer basic Telecaster, sounds like a Telecaster, and fits in just about any mix.

I could gripe about it not coming with a case, but I won't. At this price point, you might expect a gig bag, but the guy who wants a case isn't going to be happy with a gig bag, which would be a waste of a gig bag, so why not just supply a good guitar and let the buyer decide what case to buy. I bought a Gator case from Sweetwater for $, so I view $ as being my actual cost for this excellent Telecaster. In my mind, this is the current "standard" telecaster.

I have four electric guitars right now, Stratocaster, Heritage H-150, Les Paul Special, and this Tele. Gonna thin the herd down to this Tele and the H-150. The Tele will get by far the most play, as it has the sound that I hear in my head.
Music background: Playing 50+ years. Some semi-pro, but mostly just playing at home for my Siamese cat. He plays too, but that's another story.
