Vintage Tele Vibes with Modern Energy

The Fender Player II Modified Telecaster couples a hot-rodded combination of classic design and player-centric features that bridges the gap between iconic Tele tone and modern performance. With its Player II Noiseless pickups and a modified circuit featuring a treble bleed, the Player II Modified Telecaster operates with a noise-free, consistent tone — even at lower volumes. You can even inject humbucker thickness with a push-pull series switch pot that runs the single-coils in series. An alder body, a modern C maple neck, and a rolled fingerboard add up to refined playability, complete with newly designed sting trees and short shaft locking tuners for added stability. Sweetwater Tele fans who long for the brass of vintage instruments delight in this guitar’s secret: six satin chrome-plated brass saddles that facilitate trademark sustain while offering advanced intonation adjustment. Overall, the features and playability of the Player II Modified Tele culminate in an instrument with the classic aesthetic and feel you crave, as well as modern advancements that will elevate your playing experience.

A modified Tele experience

With a classic Fender shape and softer edges, the Player II Modified Telecaster plays like a Tele should, with a light, fast feel that few other designs can rival. Large enough to be comfortable in hand, the modern C shape is iconic for a reason, allowing enough girth for chords while remaining agile for faster runs and solos. The rolled fingerboard edges are free from sharp edges with a contour that mimics the hand's natural curvature.

Stability and sustain

Fender’s Player II series is known for its player-friendly design, and the Player II Modified Telecaster doubles down on this element. A set of ClassicGear short-shaft locking tuners adorns the headstock, allowing for fewer wraps while helping to hold your strings closer to the headstock for added stability. Working in tandem with the tuners, a newly designed string tree with a smoother edge seats the higher strings, creating fewer snags when tuning. Fender understands the importance of brass saddles on a Tele, and the Player II Modified Telecaster retains six with a clean satin chrome finish, expediting precision, stability, and superior intonation adjustment.

A merger of silent technology and classic tones

Debuting in 1998, Fender’s Noiseless single-coil changed the guitar world. Fender modified this iconic design to create its exclusive Player II Noiseless Tele pickup, which offers the iconic Tele twang with articulate highs, aggressive mids, and mellow lows. A modified circuit brings modern flexibility to this Telecaster, with features that retain vintage tones while adding an assortment of contemporary sounds. Meanwhile, a treble bleed pot adds a highpass filter as you lower the volume, keeping the crisp high end that is often lost at lower volumes. Packed into a push-pull pot, a series switch offers a humbucker’s thickness to the traditional Tele format by running both pickups together for a fatter sound and punchy tone.

Fender II Modified series: a musical joyride

Like a tuned-up classic car, Fender’s Player II series injects all-time classic designs with a high-octane dose of power and performance. Born out of a deep exploration under the hood and a thorough examination of Player II instruments, Fender has introduced the Player II Modified series. Home to hot-rodded editions of Stratocaster, Telecaster, Precision Bass, and Jazz Bass models, the Player II Modified series features timeless touches, including quality tonewoods, rolled fingerboard edges, and legendary body shapes. Meanwhile, a barrage of high-performance upgrades, including new noiseless pickups, elevated electronics, and reimagined hardware, deliver a souped-up playing experience. It all equates to an inventive line that beautifully complements the essence of what has made Fender the go-to choice for musicians since 1946. Like a sleek coupe fresh from the garage, your Fender Player II Modified series instrument is ready to ride.

What is Certified Open Box Gear?

At Sweetwater, we're so picky that what we call "Certified Open Box" is actually better than what most music retailers sell as "new" gear! Our gear hasn't endured hundreds of people a week plunking away at all the keyboards, fumbling through Stairway to Heaven on every guitar or playing with every fader and knob on a mixer or control surface.

Certified Open Box (also known as a demo) means we’ve had it out of the box for our YouTube channel, displayed at events, tested in our studio, or maybe it was in a customer’s hands for a few days and isn’t ‘factory fresh’ as a result. Every Certified Open Box item we sell has Sweetwater’s 2-year Total Confidence Coverage™ warranty and has been tested and verified up to ‘new’ specs by our factory-authorized technicians to make sure it’s in perfect working order before we ship it to you.

Note: While Certified Open Box items from Fender do not include the Fender Musical Instruments Corporation warranty, you can shop with confidence knowing that this item is backed and covered by Sweetwater’s 2-year Total Confidence Coverage™ warranty.

When you buy a Certified Open Box item at Sweetwater, you get:
  • 2-year Total Confidence Coverage Warranty™!
  • Products inspected and tested by our factory-authorized techs, guaranteed to function like new (or better)!

Player 2 Modified Exceeds Expectations
Player 2 upped the ante with rosewood fingerboards and rolled fret edges, but the Player 2 Modifieds hit it out of the park with all the additional upgrades. Tusq nut, push pull knob for series/parallel routing, and locking tuners are all great mods, but the real star of the show are the new Player 2 noiseless pickups. I also love the satin finish on the neck- I'm really impressed with this Telecaster- it had that broken in feel right out of the box!!

Very nice guitar
Just got it but very happy . The neck fits my hand better and its a fender. Came about perfectly tuned and intonated kudo's to sweetwater. Haven't pluged it in yet but I'm sure i'll like it.

Best "Band For Your Buck" In The Current Fender Lineup!
I'm shocked by how few reviews there currently are regarding the Player II Modified series, and I think that's because too many folks have an idea what MIM Fenders WERE, rather than what they are NOW.

This doesn't look, feel, or sound like the MIM guitars I've played since the early 90s. It feels every bit as good as a US or MIJ Fender. The satin finish and rolled fingerboard edges feel really good in the hand. The fit and finish is fantastic. The locking tuners are very stable and make string changes a breeze. The noiseless pickups sound fantastic, and the tone control mod can make you forget there isn't a humbucker in the bridge position. When you compare the price of the Player II Modified series to the specs, I honestly feel like these are a better value than a lot of the deluxe US models.

Set the price and your experiences and biases with Mexi Fenders aside and give one of these a try. I really don't think you'll be disappointed: I know I wasn't.

Fantastic Telecaster
This is the most comfortable guitar I have ever owned. Opting for the Plek set-up was well worth the expense. The playability is excellent, and the noiseless pickups sound good. For a guitar in this price range, I could not be more satisfied. The quality construction combined with the set-up makes this guitar a real keeper. I will be playing it for many years Can't put it down. The color is a soft black with a black pick guard and a black bridge pickup. With a rosewood fret board, it really looks good. The push-pull knob putting the pickups in series is a cool feature giving the guitar another sound dimension. Anyone looking for a guitar in this price range, I would recommend considering a Telecaster Player II Modified. From playability, sound, comfort and features, you can't go wrong.
Worth a look
I really appreciate Sweetwater showing pics of the actual guitar and providing the weight. There are no large music stores within 100 miles of me to check things out in person.

The fit and finish on this guitar are very well done. This Dusk finish looks really good in bright light.

The neck's rolled edges feel and play great. The fretwork is fantastic. No protruding or sharp frets. No high frets. The frets are very well polished with absolutely no hint of scratchiness. The medium jumbo frets are my personal favorite fret size. The locking tuners are a nice upgrade. The tuners are smooth and nice feeling. It holds tune really well. It has a tight neck pocket. This guitar has beautiful looking rosewood on the fretboard. The nut slots are cut well.

I really like the sound of these Player Series Noiseless pickups. Definitely on the hot side. I won't be swapping them out. I love the no hum. (I kind of need them too as my house has absolutely horrible wiring.) I really like the series/parallel option. The pots have a smooth taper, and I love the treble bleed. (For tonal reference, I'm going for blues and blues-rock tones.)

The bridge feels smooth to the touch, no snagging. I personally prefer the brass saddles over steel saddles, but I don't like the feel of an ashtray bridge on my right hand. So, this bridge is perfect for me.

I was getting sitar drone sound on the high E-string only. It was all the way from the open string all the way up the neck. After trouble shooting it was not a truss rod adjustment or pickup height issue, I was 99% sure it was the saddle. I was told a new saddle was ordered, but no ETA. After two weeks I followed up and there was still no ETA. After another week I could no longer stand having a new guitar and not being able to enjoy playing it. I took a slotting file and then progressively finer grit automotive sandpaper to the saddle and got rid of the whine. It's been over 2 1/2 months since the saddle has been on order so it appears they can't get one.

The only other slight negative I have is that the neck pickup is mounted on the pickguard rather than mounted directly into the body like on a vintage tele. It's not that I can perceive any tonal difference, but any pickup mounted to the pickguard increases the potential of picking up the noise of any pickguard static. After I removed the protective plastic from the pickguard, I started to get pickguard static even though my house is kept at 45-50% humidity. So that had to be remedied. (That type of mounting does make any needed/wanted height adjustments very quick and easy though.)

One feature not mentioned is the upgraded output jack. It's a threaded jack plate held in place with 2 screws. It is a very much appreciated upgrade.

The gig bag is thin and offers very little protection. It's more of an around the house dust cover really. If using it as an actual GIG bag, I'd want to buy something with more padding and bumpers on the bottom.

This Tele is worth a close look. It punches way above its weight class.
